Oh. And if a person you're blocking made the last post in a thread, you will see her name in the thread list. When you come into the thread to mention this, you will see her post below your reply window...
"I thought the effort to reinstate the, "Ignore", feature a foolish effort."
Considering that he JUST joined the boards, I find it funny that he seems to already know how the board works and what is 'foolish' or not...
sorry, namey.
Namo. you just keep constantly constantly constantly mentioning or qouting me. I really mustve gotten under your skin. I don't understand how that's possible to let someone get under your skin that you've only met on it message board. just ignore me like jordan does.
We will both be much happier. I m begging u.
#obsessedmuch?
Jesus.
Can we just cyber kill her? "She" is so unwanted here.

First, I did not just join. I have been a member since 2004. I am the same ARTc, ARTc2 and now ARTc3. There had been an issue with my registration and so I had to re-register.
On topic... There have been so many intelligent and thoughtful posts to this thread. Here's my take...
Information Architecture is a relatively new discipline. As such, we are still learning and the curve is steep. The mistakes we've made - and continue to make - are huge and sometimes with consequences: teen bullying, suicide, etc.
I can say that many of the concerns that were brought up here have been now considered and integrated into the newer reputational systems. In fact, the very "Ignore" button we're getting is consider a part of a reputational system, albeit not a very "strong" one.
From the, Dear Rob..., thread, it seems that we're getting the "Ignore" button back, this time with additional features. I am truly a team player and hope that it works perfectly, or at least good enough. In fact, I will be watching and perhaps will integrate what I've learned into future projects.
As for targeted ads... It is true that google and other search engines make up a large part of what ads are served you, but not just the search engines. You are being watched - perhaps not by any one person - but by the systems that are in place to monetize the Internet. Almost every site you visit and every click through you make has an impact on your digital footprint. This isn't necessarily a bad thing. Like the poster earlier who said they were proud that they were getting mostly theater ads, I too enjoy the targeted nature of the ads that are served me.
Here the one that has me stumped and I will spend quite some time thinking about... People who because of the celebracy (not a word, but you know what I mean), believe that they need anonymity. Its a good point and I will think about it and perhaps even have to solve that issue on other projects I am involved with.
Thank you all for adding to this thread. I really have enjoyed everyone's thoughts. I am looking forward to seeing how the "Ignore" button works for us. I too would like to see this site have a more "positive" tone.
BUT HE DOESN'T KNOW THE TERRITORY!
Art, you should include your history in your signature to avoid confusion.
Just a suggestion.

Excellent idea. I am not at home right now, but will do that later tonight. I am tired of being discounted because I am not a long-time user. Which, by the way, is also a form of bullying.

That's an exceedingly liberal definition of "bullying." Reminds me of when somebody says something like, "I did not enjoy a single second of the musical 'Wicked'," and people refer to it as "bashing" and the opinion-holder a "hater."
carlos, i am all about the bush. if i wanted a bare mons, i'd be dating an 11 year-old. which...i am not. gimme them curls!
namo! you said the w-word. you swore we would never speak of it again!

No, it's not. At all.

Namo, can we agree that that behaviour is a tactic that makes people feel less inclined to post here? What purpose does a post like this serve?
"Considering that he JUST joined the boards, I find it funny that he seems to already know how the board works and what is 'foolish' or not..."
as if it's impossible that someone could read the boards for years without being a member, or that someone's opinion is invalid because they've only been a member for a short time? Sure, there are kids and trolls, but that comment to ARTc3, who is obviously neither, was a totally unnecessary attack and added nothing to the discussion.
And odds are good that I'll be attacked by the same poster simply for pointing that out.

It's a form of assault, TD. And in fact, in many instances, words hurt more than fists. Because, you know, physical wounds eventually mend. But what about emotional wounds?

I read this with great interest. Thank you to ART for such a detailed and interesting post.
My one question - if you remove anonymity do you not rob some users of their escape? There are all sorts of people who use internet message boards but the stereotype is there for a reason because some, not all of course, might be the sort of folk who struggle socially in real life. Or not even struggle, perhaps they just feel they have little to say.
Assuming an identity online is surely really freeing and that is wonderful, should that be taken away?
And won't the bullying become all the more personal when its being done by someone with their real name and photograph?
Personally if someone called me a troll or did the cyber bully nonsense toward me I wouldn't be affected in the least. As this is not real life for me but the point is for some members of internet message boards and chat rooms it really is.
Thoughts?
that's because i was the only person you ever ignored, you son of a b*tch!
How very dare you! I'm the one who's a bitch, not my mother!
