I really hope if the show runs for a considerable length of time, Dave Malloy is one of the replacements. Josh Groban is just blatant stunt casting.

Is he, though? He's a phenomenal singer. I mean, his "Dust And Ashes" is already superior than Dave Mallory's version.

Yes, but I think Malloy's voice is much better for the character.

True. I speak from memory of having seen Malloy's performance vs hearing Josh's recording. We'll know soon enough if he can do the role justice or not. The piece itself is very fantastical and theatrical, so I'm actually quite looking forward to seeing Groban.

Having said that, I think one of the celebrated Jean Valjeans (John Owen-Jones, Alfie Boe) could do the score and material justice.

"Dust and Ashes" was not put into the show until the A.R.T. run. Malloy never sang the song in a performance of the show. As of now, Scott Stangland is the only Pierre who has sung it during a run of the show.

Pierre is described as plump and not thin many times in the musical, so maybe someone who's plump and not thin.

Groban is wearing padding to plump him up.

Could they really not find a plus size actor to play Pierre (or at least someone not sooo thin)? Look, I'm sure Groban will sound fantastic, but he was not who came to mind when I thought of this part.

Which still doesn't mean he won't be great. Who cares if he's wearing padding. Almost every single Tracy Turnblad was padded....even ones that were plus size.

This show would not have been moving forward without some big name. Stang land is the understudy. I stay optimistic.

If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it? These are DISCUSSION boards, not mutual admiration boards. Discussion only occurs when we are willing to hear what others are thinking, regardless of whether it is alignment to our own thoughts.

All of the reasons to be upset about Groban's casting, the whole weight argument is a pretty terrible reason to call someone miscast since it's so easily solved by costuming...should the Phantom only be played by people with scars on their faces, should only natural blondes play Elle Woods?

I'm keeping an open mind as well. Really, I'm just ridiculously excited to see this show again. If they have rush, I will probably finally understand those people who see shows over and over again.
