CONFIRMED: CATS: THE JELLICLE BALL to close on August 8th

I’ve been watching Telecharge and looking for tickets for others and noticed something odd.

Although they haven’t cancelled dates yet, it appears the last ball will be on 8/8.

They’ve already gently pulled away any working discount codes (mine no longer worked) and the evening performance on 8/8 has jacked their prices up to a level incongruent to the rest of the Saturday night shows.

Call it a hunch, and the last thing I want is this show to close, but I got a bad feeling we have an announcement coming soon.

Rumor: CATS: THE JELLICLE BALL to close in August?

Bosner and Harrison are reportedly preparing to pull the trigger soon (and apparently ALW is about to get word of it), this would make sense. An August 8 closing means an expected total of 21 previews and 143 regular performances.

I had a nice time at this one, though I didn't love it quite as much as the critics did.

It's a shame it's closing so soon because this felt ripe for some major drag queen stunt casts. Promoting guest judges was never going to do the trick on its own.

that sucks. it should have won Best Revival.

A Chorus Line revival played its final Broadway performance on August 17, 2008. The tour played its final performance on August 21, 2011. A new non-equity tour started in October 2012 played its final performance on March 23, 2013. Another non-equity tour launched on January 20, 2018. The tour ended its US run in Kansas City and then toured throughout Japan August & September 2018.

Which means that Rocky Horror is going to be the last revival standing from the season come the end of the summer - which is crazy considering how it was only supposed to run for 10-12 weeks

Too expensive. Again, a real shame.

In a perfect world, this gets a live cast recording and I can already picture a gaudy, glittery vinyl copy.

This may turn out to be true but you also told us that the word was Two Strangers was closing 6/28 and Titanique was closing 7/12 so I'm gonna wait and see on this one...

but, your insider information has a terrible record. I hope your rumor that you made up is wrong.

This is not surprising to me. When the transfer was announced I immediately thought it might last 8 months or so on Broadway. Just popping through future performances on Telecharge there are a lot of seats available.

I think it should have stayed off-Broadway. It may have lasted longer there. JMO

Why, pray tell, the f#%k would I put this out into the universe if I didn’t there was some veracity to what I’ve been paying attention to? I’ve been a huge champion of this show and hope to god I’m wrong, but these little pieces line up almost too well for me not to go with my gut.

Notice how, on the current home menu of the JELLICLE BALL website, there's a big, blank yellow banner to the left of the "tickets" box, which also seems suspicious. (Usually shows post pull quotes, Tony nominations / wins if applicable, and current / upcoming stunt casting in that area.)

I suppose they're preparing it to say something along the lines of "FINAL BROADWAY PERFORMANCE AUGUST 8."

This is very upsetting to me, but I can't say I haven't seen the signs in their social media. The exceasive lauding of the guest judges. The pivot back to using the original Cats logo in a lot of marketing.

I’ve actually found that it’s the original Cats “branding” that has hurt this show the most. Some people just can’t seem to get past it being Cats. I try to pitch how fantastic and different this is and more than once I’ve been met with, “eh…”

Yea, that seems to be the buzz. Tourists aren't biting and not interested. RAGTIME jacked up prices for their closing weekend $571!

Not gonna lie, I thought that they were going to make that the new Playbill cover after July.

I know one thing the marketing team blew was the fact that it WON three Tonys and yet the only marketing I saw of it was an Instagram ad and decals on the theatre door.

But again, it’s on a hunch - nothing official yet

Cats Haters in General are a lesser being to me anyway. Also people who act like Jellicle Ball was the ONLY way to make it work I hate even more and feels more dishonest. Especially when sitting next to a middle aged straight white woman (back when it was Downtown) telling me "Ohhhh it makes so much sense now!" Like Diva... you have no idea what's going on. You have no clue what a ball even is. You're just projecting because they're not actual Cats anymore, it's the same hokey show Cats has always been. You either like it, or you don't. I do not want to hear a word about how Jellicle Ball makes Cats make "Sense". Because it doesn't.

Shame Leiomy probably won't get to finish out the run.

Rumor: CATS: THE JELLICLE BALL to close in August?

One thing is pretty sure: If the word of mouth in this thread grows in popularity, the chances increase that the show will close in August.

There might be a "panic" run on ticket sales from those who fear they've waited too long to see it, and now it's rumored to close, but there's also that bunch who will take these posts to heart and say, "oh well - guess I missed it", and choose not to bother.

If the rumor "...Jellicle Ball looks like it's closing in August" builds a life in people's minds, '...Jellicle Ball' will close in August.

I would think they could plug in so many Drag Rave girls and get some kind of momentum. I think the renaming probably hurt them in that most of the public don’t know what a “ball” is.

Rumor: CATS: THE JELLICLE BALL to close in August?

Probably a bad idea, but I wonder if marketing it as “ for people who hated Cats” (not in those words) could have moved the needle. As someone who hated Cats I had to be cajoled into seeing it, and I thought it was a relevation, and that has been the case in my circle of friends. But perhaps my circle is too niche.

Rumor: CATS: THE JELLICLE BALL to close in August?

Balls and ballroom culture are not exactly underground anymore, thanks to projects and people like Pose, Drag Race, Beyoncé’s Renaissance world tour, HBO’s Legendary, etc that have exposed and popularized ballroom culture in the mainstream around the world. Saying ‘most people don’t know what a ball is” are just talking about themselves and their bubble. If you have any ties to or knowledge about queer culture, you likely have an understanding of what a ball is, and if you don’t, it’s not some strange unknown thing that is difficult to grasp.

It’s also been covered quite well in the coverage this production has received so acting as though it isn’t easy to pickup is a bit silly.

Maybe it was a site glitch, because there are definitely tickets available on Telecharge past 8/8 into January this morning. The prices for that night do seem strangely high, even for a Saturday night and especially for how undersold the house is, but nevertheless.
