Rosie as Miss Hannigan

Yesterday on her radio show Rosie O'Donnell expressed interest in playing Miss Hannigan in the next revival of Annie and Kristin Chenoweth said "you were born to play this role". Any thoughts on whether this rumor could actually come to fruition and/or how Rosie would be in the role?

About the only thing that would get me to a revival of Annie would be Jane Lynch as Miss Hannigan.

I agree, Jane Lynch would be fantastic!

Rosie would be great if she fine tuned the singing. She is literally screaming in that clip. After a week, her voice would be shot and listening to her would be more painful than it is in that clip.

I'd like to see Allison Janney back in a musical and I think she'd do a great job as Hannigan.

It sounds like she's not even trying to sing in that clip. I hope she wasn't.

I love Janney, and would like to see her back on Broadway, but not in a musical. Her singing in 9 to 5 was nowhere close to good enough. Now, if someone were to revive Auntie Mame, I'd put her right at the top of the list.

I would take Janney's passable singing voice over Block and Hilty's wooden acting any day.

Not all musical theatre is about belting your tits off. And Miss Hannigan isn't exactly Elphaba.

EDIT: That being said, I'd rather hear a cat being strangled than Rosie sing. Awful.

That Rosie clip was painful.

I'd be in favor of Allison Janney or Jane Lynch...both would be fantastic. I think Beth Leavel or Nancy Opel could be great too.

'nuff said. (Not a big enough name, I know. But of any actress working in our community today, Laila would NAIL it.)

Jane Lynch is a amazing versatile actress. I'd rather see her tackle something that wasn't a variation of a character she's played again and again.

Her approach to that song is -pick a note, any note and sing.

Some people I'd like to see as Miss Hannigan:

Donna Murphy
Martha Plimpton
Vanessa Williams
Vicki Clark
Katie Finneran

I'm sure that none of these women are possibilities, but I can dream...
"You travel alone because other people are only there to remind you how much that hook hurts that we all bit down on. Wait for that one day we can bite free and get back out there in space where we belong, sail back over water, over skies, into space, the hook finally out of our mouths and we wander back out there in space spawning to other planets never to return hurrah to earth and we'll look back and can't even see these lives here anymore. Only the taste of blood to remind us we ever existed. The earth is small. We're gone. We're dead. We're safe." -John Guare, Landscape of the Body

Rosie as Miss Hannigan

I always question putting a star into the role of Miss Hannigan. It seems to throw the focus of the show out of whack. For Rosie to play the role, it would be "The Rosie O'Donnell Show starring a few minor kids and a bald guy". It's not really a role for a STAR!!!

If we're going starry with Miss Hannigan:
Christine Baranski
Chita Rivera
Christine Ebersole
Sara Ramierez (although she's young enough to play it in the future)

Non-star:
Emily Skinner

Harriet Harris would also make a terrific Miss Hannigan.

AC126748, now that you mention it Martha Plimpton would be exceptional. After seeing her in Pal Joey, she really has the character acting chops and a nice voice to boot. She commits 100%. A bit young, but I think she could pull it off.

Also, I kinda think Sutton Foster would work as Hannigan and it would go against her good girl persona. Sutton is very funny and good at characters. I'd love to see her be mean. Also, she's not a sex kitten, so she could really play up the frazzled school marm angle.

PRS, Lea Michele paid a fortune to get that video of her as a teenager destroyed. How in the world did you get it?

slightly off topic.... audio of Dorothy Loudon singing Little Girls

I don't know who that is but I don't think it's Dorothy loudon.

Rosie as Miss Hannigan

Well, wasn't Loudon a "star" when she did Annie. Certainly audiences knew who she was.

I think having an A-List star would throw it out of whack, but it's nearly always the role that gets the name. JoAnne Worley, Rue McLanahan, Phyllis Diller, Sally Struthers, Nell Carter, Betty Hutton, Alice Ghostley, etc.

What's interesting about that Rosie clip is it looks like just a showcase number for a cruise or something. It's not like it's a reflection of what she would be like in a full-scale revival with a director and choreographer and everything. To me, it looks like she just sort of threw a number together to have some fun. Honestly, I'd love to see Rosie as Miss Hannigan and I think a good director could get a fantastic performance from her.
