Disturbing these governors would be slamming their doors shut to our states in front of these Syrian refugees, many of them highly educated, from entering when they're fleeing civil war, ISIS, and in the case of plenty of men, avoid conscription into it to forcifully serve Bashar Al-Assad. Their Syrian homes are now "in the mouth of a shark", to quote poet Warsan Shire. What the hell have they done to us personally? Muslims are the primary victims of ISIS--and its biggest resisters.
Shouldn't be saying this so often, but due to this fearmongering we must always remind yourselves that many Muslims, male and female, are good people who would very much prefer living under the rule of law and modernity. And Muslims are diverse socially and culturally. It's the small group of hateful fanatics who twist the Koranic interpretationsThe planned slamming to Syrians as we Americans make our progress and very important transition to becoming a multicultural and multiethnic nation, is undoubtably part of that vicious and racist backlash against it with the need to keep it frozen in time by those in power to maintain their privilege. It's the hatred and ignorance of "the other" like Muslims (and even some Christian Syrians there) that brings forth the wrong-headed social scapegoating on them.
Worth noting that there are echoes of France's context with Algeria, particularly its colonial history with a bloody war and terrorist acts from 1956-1962 that ended over 50 years ago with Algeria's independence. 5 million Algerians currently live in France. No justification for mass murders in Paris or anywhere anytime. But it does seem for many in France's Algerian community that the Algerian civil war and its legacies to this day has never ended or unresolved:
A dear friend of mine got word today that two of the men killed in the cafe were his friends (both one time boyfriends). He called me devastated. They were having dinner together. Very sad. I hope they went quick and didn't know what hit them!
Those Blocked: SueStorm. N2N Nate. Good riddence to stupid! Rad-Z, shill begone!
The refugee issue is such a red herring. A non-issue. People making a big deal out of it on both sides are guilty of become distracted with the real issue: ISIS in the middle east. Refugees take an average of 14 - 18 months to be screened, vetted, accepted and then processed. We are talking about something that is not important at this point in time. We need to be talking about improving (and increasing) the airstrikes in Libya, Syria and Iraq. That is it.
Geez, I could have sworn someone with your screen name was more bent out of shape than usual yesterday when thinking somebody else was telling it not to talk about something.
Posted on Facebook by a French man who lost his wife, the mother of his son, to the terrorists in Paris last week:
"You Will Not Have My Hatred"
Friday night you stole the life of a being of exception, the love of my life, the mother of my son, but you won't have my hatred. I don't know who you are and I don't want to know, you're dead souls. If this God for which you kill indiscriminately made us in his own image, every bullet in the body of my wife will have been a wound in his heart.
So no I don't make you this gift of hating you. You have it coming yet but respond to hatred by the anger that would be giving in to the same ignorance that made you what you are. You want that I'm afraid, that I look at my fellow citizens with a look suspicious, I sacrifice my freedom for security. Lost. Same player still plays.
I saw her this morning. Finally, after many nights and days of waiting. She was as beautiful as when it is a party this Friday night, as beautiful as when I fell head over heels in love there are more than 12 years. Of course I'm devastated with grief, I admit this small victory, but it will be short-lived. I know she will accompany us every day and that we will find ourselves in this paradise of souls free to which you'll never have access.
We are two, my son and I, but we are stronger than all the armies of the world. I did not more time to devote yourself, I must join melvil who wakes up from her nap. He has 17 months ago, he'll eat his taste like all days, then we'll play like every day and all his life this little boy will make you the affront to be happy and free. Because No, you won't have his hatred either.
Today, at a friend's workplace, the boss came in and asked if they were ready to take on two students whose main goal there would be to learn Swedish. This plan had been discussed some weeks ago and now they had apparently found two who wanted the spots.A coworker quickly spoke up and asked where they were from. The boss said, "Syria." The coworker said, "No." Several others agreed, "not after what happened in Paris!" This is small town Sweden. The chance of any sort of sleeper ISIS member taking a job helping in a nursing home in BFE is pretty damn teeny. Still, there is suddenly fear of all refugees.
We have been taking in more refugees per capita than any other country. I was so proud of that. When others said no, we welcomed everyone. Now we have border control, where we had none before. We can't cross the bridge to Copenhagen without passports and that used to be a given. You can't drive over to Oslo without documentation. The whole attitude has suddenly shifted. There used to be a very vocal minority that opposed helping refugees, but the overall attitude was, "Why do I deserve to have more when my fellow man suffers?" Now even the most open-hearted person has reservations. I fear more for my family than ever, even though we're in the middle of nowhere. I am incredibly torn and so fvckibg angry.
Pretty pretty please don't you ever ever feel like you're less than f**ckin' perfect!
Is there any truth to claims from some on the right here in the US that Sweden's experienced a major up tick in reported sexual assaults since opening up to scores of male immigrants from Northern Africa going back a few decades?
