If I have to read one more darn profile on Grindr or Adam4adam saying "no blacks" I am going to lose all hope in humanity. No its not technically racist but it still is so off putting to read. Even just seeing that phrase is just painful. And it's not just blacks, I see it for Asians, Muslims, Fat guys and Older people! If you aren't a 20 year old blonde twink then you might as well just stop being gay. It just astounds me how parts of the gay community can be so awful to one another. It needs to change!

Well hopefully they will agree. Most of the regulars here are gay and probably know exactly what I am talking about. I just hope they aren't offenders of putting those awful racist remarks on grindr or another gay app. I'm sure you have seen it even if you don't do it. Good for you!

You don't need to go on a hook up site to get a sense that the only thing we have in common is sexuality (in a very expansive sense of the word).

Gay social networking sites like DataLounge will disabuse anyone of the notion that we are any smarter, more enlightened or even more tolerant than any other group of people.

(or, for that matter, any dumber, less enlightened or less tolerant)

Just as bww can easily convince anyone of the same about theatre lovers!

Such an original insight!!! By the way, Tom Wilson Weinberg's groundbreaking off-Broadway "Ten Percent Revue" (Actor's Playhouse, 1988 ) made the same point in a song called "Personals" featuring quotes from various hook up ads, including a white guy who demanded "No fats, fems, blacks, Jews, or bigots!".

So, you know, there are racists in every community (Newsflash! Gays are NOT EXCEPTIONAL!) and there have been idiots on the GRINDRs of every era.

TAZ - I think they're being a tad harsh on you. Although, I do agree that this is hardly an under-discusses topic in lgbt circles. If it makes you feel a touch better, there have been several recent studies showing that this as just as big a problem in heterosexual dating. Perhaps the biggest difference is the directness that male-to-male connections on GRINDR, SCRUFF etc allow.

I understand and share your frustration. Any profile that prefaces a statement with "No offense, BUT...." drives me up the wall. But think of it this way, it allows you to weed out the bigots more quickly. Also, FWIW, I've been having a lot more fun the last few weeks than I have in a long time and I've noticed a much greater number of attractive, well adjusted men - many of them white - calling out this racist BS in their profiles. So, have hope. There's plenty of hot, enlightened D out there for you.

Thanks Horse Tears. That does make me feel a bit better. Sometimes I think Less is More when it comes to the about sections on gay apps. I just don't see why someone needs to write something like that on their profile.

I also don't understand why someone would close themselves off to someone of a certain ethnicity or type. I get that people are attracted to different things and that's fine, but to completely dismiss someone because of their skin or body type just seems so stupid. For example, I am more attracted to beefy muscle men and not particularly interested in thinner toned "twink" men. But I went on a date with a man who was twinkish and it was great and he was cute and I'm really glad I went on the date. Physically, yes he was a bit too skinny for me, but I didn't care because he had a great personality and he was just genuinely cute and I was attracted to him. People miss out on some great experiences when they just toss you aside if you happen to not fit their ideal Prince charming. Prince Charming comes in all shapes and sizes, people shouldn't limit themselves.

That's true to some extent. But if we look at it at that angle, why would someone care what color the other guy was if they just wanted a one night stand? Why would it matter if the guy was latino or Asian if the other guy was just looking to hookup and never see that guy again?
