Note the new marquee (artist's rendition) on 47th St.
It only says "theatre" are they going to sell the naming rights?
The turning of Times Square into another Mall of America is now complete. The uniqueness of Times Square has now been replaced by glass monoliths and electronic signs. It is no longer anything special sad to say.

THEATER. WITH AN 'ER.' NOT THEATRE!!!! This, to me, is worse than using the word "Soundtrack." People, it's not that difficult. A venue is a theater, not a theatre. Thank you.

Luckily we're still getting worthy shows (for the most part.) Last season in particular was splendid. I'm not looking forward as much to this season, though. We are getting a 41st theater too.

What's the point of this? So the Palace Theatre is a theater and couldn't possible be a theatre?
My understanding (and the world's understanding) is the following:
"In most contexts, there is no difference in meaning between theater and theatre. Neither has any special definitions in general usage. The main thing that most English speakers and learners need to know is that theater is the preferred spelling in American English, and theatre is preferred virtually everywhere else.
Some Americans do make distinctions—for instance, that a theater is a venue while theatre is an art form, or that a theater is a movie theater while a theatre is a drama venue. There is nothing wrong with making these distinctions, but they are not consistently borne out in general usage."
The distinction is in your mind only and you (and any one who wants to) is free to make it. The rest is free to not make it.

Also back on topic. Really cool stuff and an interesting feat of engineering. That stretch of Times Sq is one of the ugliest places to me in that area, a face lift would be nice. Also interested to see the impact of this construction on such a busy stretch of road. The Times Sq area has become one huge construction mess this summer as it is, making pedestrian traffic extra difficult of late.
Theater vs theatre. It is nitpicking which has become a high art on BWW.

Playbill spells it theatre. It doesn't matter, but there's no strict rule, and who really cares?
Damn I didn't realise it was gonna be one HUUUUUGE billboard.
Yeah that's less exciting. Don't understand the sudden surge in TV screen billboards but I guess that's what tourists want. I just wonder what the new marquee might look like?

Hopefully it wont be dwarfed by the giant LED screen.
It's being moved to the side street, so it won't be dwarfed, but I just hope it's got more character than the new Marquis marquee.
That would not be to hard.
Yes, God, PLEASE give us a better marquee than the Marquis'

The sudden surge in LED screens is for several reasons.
More dynamic ads, ads that can be interactive and responsive, they can coordinate multiple buildings and signage for certain events, they can change ads more rapidly and keep them up to date, and it makes it easier to fulfill the signage and wattage rules in Times Sq.
It's just Times Square modernizing. Which it has always done. No signs, then print billboards, then lights, then neon, then LED.
It doesn't look like it did back in Roxy's youth.
Liza shut up, god why do you come here? To insult others and try to be the big man? ite pathetic. The spelling theatre is how it's spelt in the UK and many other places.
Ive always had major issue with the Palace Marquis, how its overcrowded with all those other billboards, made even worse when they cut their own billboard in half, Would have been nice if they made a nice new marquis that would stand out from all that clutter
The current Palace marquee does get lost. It looks like they'll get a new 75' marquee on 47th st, thought!

Any pics of its old marquees? The current one is awful but I'd imagine it wasn't always like that. Looks like the Broadway's which is awful.
I'm a bit worried about them shifting the marquis over though, wasnt there a survey or something that showed practically all of the theatres on that side of broadway that do not have broadway frontage do lousy business? (I think they used the Belasco as a main example, the rest are playhouses mainly). mind you the theatre name is still somewhat famous so who knows
