I think that some here on this thread are simply succumbing to peer pressure and posting comments/opinions based on the principle of "going along to get along". Is it because of fear or being unable to post about the show without influence from others here on this thread.

It is remarkable that this is about reviews of Promises, Promises in PREVIEW shows that the topic would divert into cast members and their speculated political affiliations.

Is is the "join the crowd" philosophy due to sociological and/ or the psychology of the person commenting or opining on this thread.

I doubt that those who work so hard to be able to purchase a ticket, fly into NYC and get a hotel for a couple of days will decide for themselves and not base any feelings, thoughts on those in the minority posting on this thread. Let the theatergoer decide for themselves AFTER seeing a show.

I think that Sean Hayes and Kristin Chenoweth are great casts for their roles. They bring a wealth of experiece and are professionals which will enable them to shine in their respective roles. A great production with a great cast.

And I'll bet that's what 99% of the audiences will think, too. Well said.

Question for those who have seen PROMISES PROMISES and have their playbills handy: who is understudying Sean Hayes? Thanks.

Matt Loehr is the only person listed as a Chuck understudy.

I saw Promises, Promises tonight (4/5/10). FYI, the audience ate it up and gave a standing ovation. IMHO the cast is great; the music is great and I will see it again.

Saw the show tonight as well. I thought that the first act definitely needs to be trimmed a bit. I also didn't like Turkey Lurkey at all! Hayes and Chenoweth were great, but without a doubt, Katie Finneran was the real standout! Overall, the show still needs a bit of work, but like dwb0102 said, the audience ate it up and gave the cast one hell of a standing ovation! One other thing: Kristin Chenoweth has to lose the guitar in "I'll Never Fall In Love Again".

I was there, too, in the last row of the mezzanine. Dwb must have been in the orchestra- for some reason the orchestra was a lot more reactive than the mezz: it was almost like there were two different shows. Anyway, I really enjoyed it. It didn't come close to matching the brilliance of Night Music, Ragtime, or Finian's, but that has more to do with the material than the production. I thought that Chenoweth was by far the best part of the show, and Finneran stole the show in her few scenes. The acting by everyone was excellent, but the singing by Hayes and Goldwyn left something to be desired, though they were both decent. More tomorrow...
I definitely want to see it again, though. The view was terrible (and this is coming from someone who usually LIKES to sit far back) and my neighbor dozed off on my shoulder, so I think I'll like it a lot more closer up and with a neighbor who doesn't use my shoulder as a pillow (and I don't even think he realized it lol).

The youtube footage sounds good. Cheno is in fine voice. Personally, I think her wig is a disaster. THAT makes her look 40.

Just listened to some audio from this production. Not a fan of the revised overture, not a fan of "I Say A Little Prayer" and "A House Is Not A Home" being shoehorned into the show and not a fan of the arrangements to "Turkey Lurkey Time".

I believe Katie did something similar in Noises Off! a few years back. In fact, I think she won the Tony for it that year.

My daughter and I saw oprning night of previews, and , first of all Dick Latessa and Katie Finnerman(sp??) were great..and I really think that what was missing , was that you really did not care (deeply) about the leads...and I believe that that has more to do with Tony Goldwyn ( who you should have hated and pitied..and I did neither,,,I simply did not care)..Sean Hayes
was perhaps not as deminsional as you might have liked..and Christine Chenowith has presence..but if you don't hate Sheldrake, you have a hard time feeling some emotion for Fran...Which brings me to the supporting players...they had the right chops to catch your attention and add depth and ironic humor to Sean Hayes ( who did a great job) and Christine Chenowith's scenes...they can not do it on all on their own...and they did a credible job....Do not be petty...it was fun!

I've been thinking that about her wig too. It makes her look older and too sophisticated.

I had no idea that Christine Chenowith was in this....So much better than that hack Kristin Chenoweth...Plus Christine is actually age appropriate for the part and is taller than 5'

Count me in as another HUGE fan of the great Christine Chenowith. I had no idea she was part of this revival.

And The East Wing, a series about a small Soviet airline.

Having spoken with a friend earlier today, I'm afraid I'm going to break all resolutions and get a ticket for this (even though I hated the original production.). IMO, La Cage will (hopefully) be the one to beat, but I try to be as objective as I can. Oh, well, if I like it, so much the better. If I don't, well, that's a good enough excuse to have a super-abundance of cocktails at Sardi's.

I'm surprised more people haven't mentioned Dick Latessa. I thought he was one of the standouts, in addition to Kristin and Katie Finneran.

Not having seen the show yet, I'm in no position to comment. HOWEVER, Dick Latessa is the kind of performer that warms my heart -- year in, year out, a steady, fine and (more than anyting else) reliable showman. The kind that Broadway couldn't exist without and the kind that is becoming all too rare. Love 'ya, Dick.

As much as I hate to be "that guy", is there any talk on a recording yet?

I thought Sean Hayes was absolutely charming and delightful. Didn't remind me of JustJack at all (which was what I was expecting). He's not the best singer on Broadway, but it didn't matter - his acting was wonderful, and his singing was just fine. Kristin is miscast, oh well. Overall I was very impressed by the dance numbers and general production.

I was a little confused over Say a Little Prayer and A House is Not a Home. They didn't seem to fit into the plot at all...

Both of them came out to sign playbills, and were great. Sean made sure to get everyone on both sides of the street and looked like he was having a great time. Kristin stopped to chat about Glee, etc, with anyone who asked. (She never bumped into Idina while filming, FYI.. not yet at least). So tiny in person - it's ridiculous!
