Actually, I'm half wrong. It premiered in England, but not in London (it was; however, produced by the RSC).
The show was produced by Friedrich Kurz and the Royal Shakespeare Company and had its first four-week run beginning on February 13, 1988 in Stratford-upon-Avon, where it received mixed reviews.
It played the RSCs home in Statford for 4 weeks from Feb 1988.
It then transfered to Broadways Virginia Theatre in May 1988.
Whats your version darling?
Get your facts right before you post.

Can someone please explain how you blow through $45 million dollars??? I'm really curious.

They didn't SPEND the 45 million, it's just that major producers have pulled out, despite what they say to MTV.
The post on ATC was fact. Agents/managers have been informed that contracts for Spiderman will not be forthcoming and that their actors should look for other projects.

all the actors who were cast in the project.
okay - now say what you will about spiderman the musical - i just feel terribly for all those actors, especially the younger people who thought they'd secured a broadway show, only to see it fall through the cracks. they're probably crushed right now. so sure, spiderman might have been a bad idea from the start... but what a crappy blow all those actors just got.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think the "800 years to recoup" was just a joke.
And did I hear somewhere that with the renovations, the hilton would have over 1900 seats.

I think I remember watching the Broadway PBS Special say that Wicked was $14 million, and it would have to play to 90% (**i don't remember the actual percentage) houses for 2 years. $45 million is only 3 times more than $14 million.

So, you are saying you DO understand that Spider-Man would have to sell out every night for five years to come close to getting that money back? (aka - Not realistic or smart)
Maybe they can come up with a comic where the musical opens and sells out every night for 30 years. That's more like it.
Blaxx you are my favorite, your sarcasm makes me smile.

Does U2 think they are the first people to write a rock musical?
Of course U2 think they are the first - they touch on opera, they touch on rock'n'roll, there are some real character-driven songs and they have a girl villain. No one has even done that before.
Fail.
Julie Taymor already said that only Peter Parker will sing and not Spider-Man.
Who is the girl villian, Cumming or Taymor?
Her name is Swiss Miss and is a dominatrix.
