Well I didn't want to get into it, but he's a Satanist.
Every full moon he sacrifices 4 puppies to the Dark Lord and smears their blood on his paino.
This should help you understand the score for Wicked a little bit more.

Haha!! Nailed it.
So it's obviously not the same story at all, it seems they just kept the idea of a lonely boy and a pet dragon and changed everything else.
As I mentioned earlier I have a true soft spot for the original which has to do with some personal memories being connected to the first time I saw it.
I was going to go with Truffaut's "The Wild Child" meets "The Water Horse," but I like Nell ...
And I would just like to go on record advocating for summer tent-pole re-imaginings of "Now You See Him, Now You Don't" and "The World's Greatest Athlete."
And maybe "Gus."

More like Pete's Plush Toy. A dragon with fur instead of scales? Did they flunk Dragon 101? He's reptilian (i.e., scales, eggs, etc.), not a mammal, unless you want to tell us Unicorns are actually dogs with horns.
This sounds like a Disney marketing decision, so they can sell stuffed animals. Ugh.

Ok. Yeah. No. I'll take the cartoon dragon, Helen Reddy, Mickey Rooney, Jim Dale, Shelley Winters, Red Buttons and Jeff Conway any day before this crap.
Eh. The design could've been worse but I have some doubts that this new version could work. Pete's Dragon has been a Disney film I don't watch that often but when I do I think it's charming for what it is, as a post Mary Poppins film, it could've been better but I think it's fine.

Director David Lowery explained why Elliott is a furry dragon in an IGN article, saying that he'd rather have "the kind of dragon you really want to give a hug to" than a Game Of Thrones type dragon, which he described as "cool, but scaly and cold".
Since dragons are fantasy creatures I guess you can basically adapt them to suit whatever story you are trying to tell.
