My husband and I are probably coming to NY in June and would like suggestions for a musical. We love upbeat, modern musicals with catchy music (to me, I like to walk out with the songs in my head). As an idea of some of our favorites...we love Rent, Wicked, Book of Mormon, and also on my top list are ones like Mamma Mia, Matilda.
If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it?

Have you seen Something Rotten? I would recommend it for anyone who liked Book of Mormon. Similar levels of zany and tongue-in-cheek humor but without the foul language. Same director-choreographer.
If you're looking for catchy music, I'd definfiely go with Something Rotten. I think the music is fantastic and the songs were definitely stuck in my head after the show :)
Thank you for the replies. Looks like there are 4 to look at, so will look these up. It also looks like a bunch are coming out in March or so (guess in time for the Tony's).
Funny to see Andrew Lloyd Webber do something like School of Rock.
I'll throw in another vote for Something Rotten as well.

I'm going to assume that 1950s was a typo.
I took the OP's post to mean a NEW musical as opposed to a long running or revival show.

It's not a "modern time period" being in the 1590s but I think the jokes and score are modern. It's also an original musical. I really can't recommend it enough.
Something Rotten is probably what your looking for. It wasn't my cup of tea but I think you'll enjoy it. It is set around the 1590's but it has a very modern score (pop and rock). I recommend looking up the cast album and checking out a song or two before purchasing tickets.
Plus Christian Borle plays sexy rock star Shakespeare (and won a Tony for it).
I'd also recommend Something Rotten, but if you happen to be in town before June (or if there's any possibility of an extension, but I'm not sure) I'd also recommend Dear Evan Hansen off-Broadway at Second Stage, which runs through late May.

Thanks. We'd be coming end of June for our anniversary. NY is a common anniversary destination for us as we love it there.
Ok...so I've listened to music and looked at YouTube. Think it's between
Something's Rotten or Finding Netherland
A lot on here seem to vote for Something Rotten and I liked Finding Neverland music from youtube. It seems like my kinds of thing (and hopefully DH would like this too?)
Anyone know if there are any cast changes between now and end of June? Would be neat to see Kelsey Grammer in Finding Neverland and Christain Boyle in Somethign Rotten (who I quite like).
Grammar will be gone by then. (He's only playing the role until mid-March.....I think; but it is a limited run for him.)
It would also not surprise me if most of the leads are gone from Rotten as well.

If you haven't seen Kinky Boots, "modern and catchy" describes it to a tee. I'll also suggest Something Rotten, as it is in fact a modern musical (set in the distant past).

Kinky Boots is actually playing in my city now. Haven't had a chance to see it, but feel like we should see something we can't see at home.
I loved Finding Neverland, but I'm not sure it fits your bill. The score is modern, and upbeat at times. But the story is quite emotional. I've seen it twice and cried twice at the end. Have you seen the movie?
What makes you think Something Rotten is "old-time"? Yes, it's set in the 16th century, but it's a modern pop-rock score, and there's nothing old-school musical theater about it. It's definitely catchy. But if it hangs on the cast for you, just wait until they announce a cast-change (or not). You should still be able to get good tickets closer to the date.
Also, I obviously haven't seen American Psycho yet, but that might fit the bill, too?

American Psycho could be an interesting one. I did like the movie (and love thriller/horror). Funny that it's a musical. (Then again, there is "Evil Dead, The Musical"...lol). Since it doesn't preview until March, do they release any songs beforehand?
Think I saw Misery too
As for Something Rottern, the fact that it takes place so long ago and (I think) is based on Shakespeare makes me think it's old fashioned.
There are a few songs on American Psycho's website.
