Hey y'all! So I'm planning on moving to Los Angeles and I'm going to be out there for the month of Feb. exploring LA and seeing where I'd like to live, etc, so any recommendations on neighborhoods, etc. Also any cool historic theaters to see? Obviously I'm going to social distance and not like "go out" but figured I'd drive around and look at sights. And any fellow BWW in LA?!

Well.. welcome. Lots of things depend on your budget and what your here for, So Hollywood, West Hollywood,etc.. have all become ghetto-ish ( I have been clarified on the poor choice of words by SR) since the pandemic. But rent has not gone down. Like most places people have left to more open areas. I would look in the valley. Shernan Oaks, Studio City, etc.. Nice places ro live and more affordable. Take a look at Silverlake as well. Lots of theaters in downtown LA. UNFORTUNATELY it,is now a area full of homeless and crime.
I know there is a huge problem in CA with homeless people. But you can help. You can bring them food, blankets, clothing, etc. Not to mention donating to food banks and shelters. It's not like this is a problem that can't be fixed with resources and community outreach.
When you say "ghetto". Because the term was originally used to describe marginalized groups or areas where marginalized groups resided, and because it’s still so often associated with things like poverty, crime, cheap, and inauthentic things, many people consider a word like that to be offensive, because it often times sounds like a racial insult. Perhaps that's not what you meant though.
I don't live in LA area anymore, but I visit often. You might check out the LA Conservancy. They do some wonderful tours about LA history. I took their tour of the old theaters in downtown LA and it was excellent. It looks like they aren't doing the tours currently because of COVID, but when they start up again, I highly recommend them.
I'll put in a good word for Silverlake where I live-- just 4 miles up from downtown LA you find a real "neighborhood" neighborhood surrounding a man-made reservoir up and down lots of tree-covered hills that offer great views. Gays, latinos, yuppies, working class, artists, couples, families, retirees, little kids, loads and loads of dogs all call Silverlake home. The cliche is its gays tend toward the pierced tattoo'ed alternative/daddy variety compared to the twinks in WeHo, but that's a huge exaggeration. (I boast no piercings, tattoos or Daddy cravings.)
Plus it's super-convenient to all the major freeways, something that WeHo is dismal at. Dame, do you disagree?

Is 1200 a month even do-able in Los Angeles for a studio? I've lived in NYC for 8 years, but I don't know LA so I don't know what's too much, etc, You know? I don't know the areas. I loved Silverlake. Drove around it the other day. I like walk-ability since I've lived in NYC for so long. Love to be able to walk to a CVS or something.
You didn't ask...so I'm prepared for the read. You should have continued living with your parents and saved your money. Then when the pandemic was over, move wherever, but with a nice savings in your pocket.
All good. I did that actually. For 11 months and saved a lot but I’m looking ahead at the next few months when things - I think - will slowly come back. And want a plan. Unemployment ends March 14th. So need a plan.
