Line from Joanne’s Monologue

I have been trying to remember a certain line from Joanne’s monologue in the club scene. I’m paraphrasing, but she essentially says that “the world is made for the young and for the rich, and if you aren’t one you damn well better have plenty of the other.” I’ve looked at the original scripts and cannot find it; they seem to have added the line to this version.

Does anyone have the exact line? I would be very appreciative of any information or even better, the correct quote itself. Thanks!

If/when they do another cast recording I really hope they record all the dialogue in this scene!

"You can't overrate Bernadette Peters. She is such a genius. There's a moment in "Too Many Mornings" and Bernadette doing 'I wore green the last time' - It's a voice that is just already given up - it is so sorrowful. Tragic. You can see from that moment the show is going to be headed into such dark territory and it hinges on this tiny throwaway moment of the voice." - Ben Brantley (2022) "Bernadette's whole, stunning performance [as Rose in Gypsy] galvanized the actors capable of letting loose with her. Bernadette's Rose did take its rightful place, but too late, and unseen by too many who should have seen it" Arthur Laurents (2009) "Sondheim's own favorite star performances? [Bernadette] Peters in ''Sunday in the Park,'' Lansbury in ''Sweeney Todd'' and ''obviously, Ethel was thrilling in 'Gypsy.'' Nytimes, 2000

This, and hopefully the upcoming documentary will feature extensive show footage.

The OP is correct in saying that this specific line isn’t in the original book. I, too, returned to the published book + libretto after the London production to find that it wasn’t there.

I recall reading in an interview with Sondheim that every book revision for the 2018 revival was painstakingly done by only using words from George Furth’s plays. I’ve wondered from where this specific line was borrowed.

There’s a chance the line is from the original Furth vignettes on which Company is based —therefore being unpublished materials from his estate. If that’s the case, then what a lovey, full-circle moment.
