Just out of curiousity, does anyone know of smaller cast musicals. Please state the name of the musical... and how much people are in the original cast thanks! [I am thinking of Broadway shows with a cast smaller than 40, but probably with a bigger cast than ITW... I hope]

here is an example:
Into the Woods - 19

I appreciate your help..... kangaroo

"At the opening night party, they had clowns on stilts, jugglers, a chocolate fountain, popcorn, hot dogs. [My son] looked at me like I had been holding back. Like, 'This is what you do?' I had to tell him, 'No, no, darling. Opening nights don't usually look like this.' It's usually a dark bar with a bottle of vodka." ?Chitty Chitty Bang Bang's Jan Maxwell plus i proudly share the title of the shortest member over the age of 10 with wickedrentq!

oh...... and I wanted to add shows that could be done by schools. [It can have a high difficult factor {that doesn't really matter}, but it should be relatively well known...] thanks again!

The Fantasticks comes first to mind. Five main characters and two to three supporting characters.

You might look into the Jr. edition of Les Miz.

www.mtishows.com - use their Show Selector. Displays results according to what you need: musical, small cast, etc.

www.samuelfrench.com too.

"The Spectacle has, indeed, an emotional attraction of its own, but, of all the parts, it is the least artistic, and connected least with the art of poetry. For the power of Tragedy, we may be sure, is felt even apart from representation and actors. Besides, the production of spectacular effects depends more on the art of the stage machinist than on that of the poet."

godspell is a good one because you can basically have as many or as little people in the show as you want.

this list could go on forever. just look on narrowing websites, they do exist... (mti has a function)... but the best small cast musicals (in my opinion) are:

falsettos
a new brain
elegies
little shop of horrors
once on this island
lucky stiff
the fantasticks
you're a good man, charlie brown
snoopy
godspell
the last five years
songs for a new world
tick, tick... boom!

there are many others, including some on this thread that you can't get the rights too, but those should help you start. there are many others that are small casts with ensembles... but they could still be under 20.

Dames at Sea has a small cast and it is a delightful show with a great score. I've seen it done with or without an ensemble.
