So last night me, my mother and my friend jessica went to the Ars Nova to see a reading of what we knew to be Men. But when we got there we learned the true name was Fu@*ing Men.

So the cast was as follows

The escort, John: Logan Marshall Green
The soldier, Steve: Chris Chalk
The graduate kid, Marco: Anthony Rapp
The college kid, Kyle: Barret Foa
The married guy, Leo: Robert Newman
The other married guy, Jack: Jerry Dixon
The porn star, Ryan: Cheyenne Jackson
The playwright, Sammy: Alan Cumming
The actor, Brandon: Peter Sarsgaard
The mogul, Dan: Michael Crumpsty

To begin the show if that actor wasn't on stage they all sat on the aisle seats of the theatre. So who sits next to my mother? Anthony Rapp and in front of her? Cheyenne Jackson, she was very happy. The show was hysterical and it connected each character together and was about fu@*ing men. The cast was completely perfect for their respectable part and each situation made the plot funnier and funnier. It was a really great play, and I hope to see it staged out someday.

we all got autographs and pictures afterward and it was just such a great evening, thought i would share.

It was a benefit, but not insanely expensive. Tickets were $35, but it sold out *very* quickly.

Loved it. The title is so clever. The guys were stellar, and all perfectly cast. Alan Cumming is divine. He was the highlight for me, actor-wise. Logan also continues to surprise me with his talent, since he proved me wrong last summer, when he did Swimming in the Shallows.

The play is basically about ten gay guys (or... really, guys who sleep with men in some capacity) and it's told with this sort of domino-effect technique, of a chain of sexual acts and relationships. It's, in short, an exploration of gay sexual culture. There's a prostitute who ends up dating his "straight' army trick, two guys in a long-term, open relationship, a grad student who is going through a bad breakup, a horny college student who gets with older guys online, etc, etc. It's really heartfelt and funny, as well as poignant and, IMO, pretty through-provoking, too. It leads to a lot of really great cultural and sociological questions, I think.

We've been talking quite a bit about some of the above on the "Welcome, Anthony Rapp" thread on the off-topic board, as well; not the play, specifically, but some of the issues it deals with.

Peter Sarsgaard AND Barrett Foa in the same room....

I would kill to see Sarsgaard perform something in person, although obviously I didn't go as far to buy tickets and get to NY. Does he do stage stuff in NY often?

I really enjoyed it as well. I went because of the cast, but ended up really enjoying the play. It is thought-provoking and umm...fun to watch...hehe.

Taboo, I was a row behind you all the way to the left though. How could you see over Cheyenne? lol. I noticed Alan trying to see around Barrett. It was funny.

I love so much of the cast, but dealing only with portrayals and characters, I think Barrett was the highlight for me--playing such a typical college student who is horny and gets high--it just seems like something very different for him, not to mention he is of course nothing like that. He was really funny.

I really enjoyed the reading and the cast was fantastic. I'm not so sure of the 'Crash' formula though. Seems like everyone is using it these days, although in this play it works. Acting highlight for me was Jerry Dixon portraying an HIV positive man in an open relationship. Barrett was quite good although he seemed to have problems with his lines here and there. Cheyenne showed a different side of his personality and seems like whoever does a scene with him these days gets a little lip lock action. Peter has an irresistible magnetism.

Ahhhh that's amazing! I wanted to see this but alas, non *sigh*

Hey, Taboowickedfan - how's Rocky Point treating you? :) You're graduating this year right? I'm friends with Rebecca Gimple.. I know I've told you this before, but it's just awesome that a fellow Suffolk-Countyer saw this awesome show :)

And the other thing about the Phantom Lady was, Bert, she realized, in the city that never sleeps... What did she realize, Kitten? That all the songs she'd listened to, all the love songs, that they were only songs. What's wrong with that? Nothing, if you don't believe in them. But she did, you see. She believed in enchanted evenings, and she believed that a small cloud passed overhead and cried down on a flower bed, and she even believed there was breakfast to be had... Where? On Pluto. The mysterious, icy wastes of Pluto.
