I'm going to be visiting New York from California in August and I was wondering if anyone had any advice on what might be good to see while I'm there. I'm already going to see Spamalot but any other suggestions would be welcome. Thanks!
I wanted to get something that an "ex"-junkie like him would really appreciate and cherish....it's a brick of heroin shaped like a heart.

I was thinking about shows such as the Drowsy Chaperone, Curtains or Spring Awakening but honestly, I don't care so much about subject matter as opposed to the quality of the current cast and the overall production. I'd be more willing to buy tickets for a completely unfamiliar show with a highly recommended cast/score then vice versa.

The cast is excellent, with Mary Louise Wilson and Christine Ebrsole giving ledgendary performances. I love the score as well.
I am a firm believer in serendipity- all the random pieces coming together in one wonderful moment, when suddenly you see what their purpose was all along.
I second GREY GARDENS also would say THE COLOR PURPLE and CURTAINS

Thanks for the suggestions so far everyone. Rent came to mind, because of the whole Adam/Anthony thing, but does anyone know how the rest of the cast is?

hairspray is amazing, drowsy chaperone is amazing, avenue q is great too.
but honestly anothy and adam coming back is a once and a lifetime chance! so thats what i'd do, i saw it last july and the rest of the cast was pretty good
Company, Grey Gardens, Spring Awakening, Avenue Q, and Curtains are all good.

If you're thinking about Rent, then definitely see Spring Awakening with the original cast. I was fortunate enough to see the original cast of Rent, and you get the same feeling of freshness, excitement, and amazing energy that Rent once had with this infectious show. Don't miss it. There are future Broadway stars in the making in this cast.
If you want to see stars at the peak of their game, then don't miss Grey Gardens. Mary Louise Wilson and Christine Ebersol are turning in the performances of their career.
I will see Donna Murphy in anything. I think she's amazing, and I've got tickets for LoveMusik, but I've heard the play itself can be a little boring.
