I thought the 1995 film Georgia starring Jennifer Jason Leigh in her best performance and garnered an Oscar nomination for Mare Winningham would have made a great musical a la Hedwig and the Angry Inch.
Cat's Don't Dance is more of a homage to the old 1940s MGM musicals and has a bunch of characters that are different animals, not just cats, so it is different enough from Cats. Not sure what the box office potential is for that show though. It wasn't a big hit as a movie though it has somewhat of a fan following.

I don't know how to break it to you but you might want to stick your Cats musical back in a drawer. Someone got there first."
Cats Don't Dance has barely any similarity at all to Cats - It's an allegory of racism in casting in Golden Age Hollywood for kids, using "humans vs. anthropomorphic animals" instead of the actual races. Only the two main leads are cats - the others are humans or animals of all sorts.
Still, as much as I love the movie, I don't think it would translate very well to stage, but that's just me.
This thread is very odd to look at as a lot of these movies have been made into shows lol. Like I was thinking people were being sarcastic (like everyone is on these boards) and then I saw the dates haha
Arsenic and Old Lace.......Have Bette Midler and Bernadette Peters as the old aunts and Nathan Lane as brother Teddy. Have Stephen Sondheim write the score.
