My grandmother asked me what I want for Christmas this year, and I want a new cast recording, but I haven't decided which one I want yet.
It's down between Sweeney Todd and Evita. Now, I already have the Sweeney Todd OBC with Len Cariou (who I actually prefer to George Hearn), but I was thinking of getting the John Doyle revival cast recording. However, I also love "Evita" and I've never owned a cast recording of that.
Which should I get, and if Evita, which version? (Concept, Original London, OBC, London revival-- let's just say I've ruled out the film soundtrack.)
If you don't have an Evita, get the OBC of it. Can't go wrong with Mandy and Patti...
Totally agree...get what you don't have at all.
Yeah, I love the revival of Sweeney, but I think it's more important you could a recording of Evita first!
I would recommend the OBC, followed closely by the concept. I'm sure you'll get varying opinions, but I think for sure one of those too is the best. I love Colm Wilkinson on the concept... He sounds so different than in his later recordings.
Some people prefer the Sweeney revival recording but I think they generally are the ones who have seen the show. Personally I think the OBC absolutely kills it so there is really no need to buy it yet [And don't be ashamed about preferring Len Cariou :P, a lot of people do]
I wish I could SEE Cariou's performance since he's so damn good on that CD, but I can't really complain about Hearn either...
I'm not a huge fan of the Sweeney revival (I mean, I loved seeing it, but the CD is less thrilling, and no comparison to the OBC).
The concept of Evita is certainly worth getting, as is the OLC, but without question if I only had one recording I would stick with the OBC (then again, I didn't think the movie soundtrack was THAT horrible either).
The OBC of Evita.
Get the OBC of EVITA.
the only thing with evita OBC is that it is going to be fairly expensive... atleast all the places i have seen, if that doesnt work.. go with the recent London revival :) i LOVE it
If your grandmother loves you, she'll get you both.
Wow! 33 bucks from Amazon????? Yikes! (But still worth it!)
I think it's in the Grandmother's Handbook that if you don't buy your Grandchild all existing recordings of EVITA (including the rare tour recording), you are an unfit Grandmother.
I called CPS on my Granny when I only received two recordings of the show.
Mine bought me the highlights CD and I haven't spoken to her since.
Evita.
Ooh, thank you for your lovely responses. I think I'll go for the Evita OBC... but someday, I plan to collect some additional Evita AND Sweeney recordings. I'm the kind of person who has four Les Miserables recordings, so that's probably what'll happen.
Also, I usually get some iTunes gift cards for Christmas, so I might be able to buy the other one-- or at least, some of the songs from it-- on my own.

Why is the 2-Disc OBC Evita $33? Is it still that in stores?
IF you aren't against it, I get all of my ALW CDs at used bookstores, and they are typically in good to excellent condition, and cheaper.
Stores? You can GO to stores to buy CDs?
i find more cd's available on line than i do at the old brick and mortar stores especially when it comes to movie soundtracks and cast albums. the selection is mostly slim to none or "just the usual" in some cases.
All I know is that on iTunes, the OBC Evita costs $22.77, and I'll probably just be getting a $25 dollar iTunes gift card, with which I can purchase a CD. The Sweeney revival cast recording costs $19.99. (WHY do I always want the most expensive recordings?)
