While watching Pushing Daisies this afternoon, I couldn't help but think what inspired casting Kristin Chenoweth would be for a revival of MAME in about ten years.
Thoughts?
Tonya Pinkins: Then we had a "Lot's Wife" last June that was my personal favorite. I'm still trying to get them to let me sing it at some performance where we get to sing an excerpt that's gone.
Tony Kushner: You can sing it at my funeral.
kchenofan's computer is broken right now. This is her fridge. Now, you can leave a message, but say it slowly, so I can write it on a post-it note and stick it to myself.
As for Lauren Graham, I don't know if she has the singing chops for Mame. However, she'd be terrific if someone were reviving the non-musical Auntie Mame.
"It does me no injury for my neighbour to say there are 20 gods or no god. It neither picks my pocket, nor breaks my leg."
-- Thomas Jefferson
no one is backing up their vehement claims that she is so wrong. Sure she is not the BEST choice (I support Megan Mullally) but she is a charming actress and the role isn't TRAGICALLY difficult... I'm sure she would pull it off well. Why such strong disdain?
Sorry, much as I respect her talent and almost always enjoy her performances, Chenoweth is probably the LAST person I would want to see as Mame.
Not everyone is suited to every role .....

I think Chenoweth has a better grasp on physical comedy, but comes with very little subtlety. Which is what would make her Gooch hysterical.
And yes, Lauren Graham can *definitely* handle it. She played Anita in WSS at SMU when she was getting her masters. And nothing in Mame is that challenging of a song.
