A Dark Day in America

Kareem Abdul-Jabbar: What it means to be black during a Trump administration

On hopelessness — and the way to escape it.

"What’s important now is to skip the wallowing, finger-pointing, name-calling period and begin an immediate and focused effort on dominating the 2018 midterm elections during which all 435 seats in the House of Representatives and one-third of Senate seats will be in play. People of color cannot merely play defense anymore. They must mount a long-term offensive that includes relentlessly challenging every act of institutional racism in the country. African Americans make up only 12.3 percent of the population, so it’s imperative that we form a coalition with other groups that are targeted by Trump, including women, Latinos, immigrants and the LGBT community. We have to ignore the self-loathing collaborators among those groups because they prefer the path that makes them think they will be accepted and prized as equals when, at best, they are merely patsies for Trump’s movement.

In “Formation,” Beyoncé says, “I dream it, I work hard, I grind till I own it.” Donald Trump may not appreciate those words, but those words can inspire all African Americans and others who wish to make America America again. Not hope, but action. Not later, but now."

Trump will not be "my president." Neither were Obama, Bush, or any of the others. The president presides over the government. He's the president of a State, not the president of me."

Which reads like the reason for keeping the Head of Government role separate from the Head of State.

This is a national tragedy, a pig is going to be our president, and he will surround himself with pigs, and people are contributing to a thread that says we got it all wrong, no you got it all wrong, black America, white trash, our family and friends, you got it all wrong and hopefully the youth will become more informed.

The protests are just getting started. And that makes me proud to be American.

"The protests are just getting started. And that makes me proud to be American."

I read in another thread that you participated in the marches earlier today. Good for you. That's the spirit. The battle will be waged on many fronts. A few attorney friends of mine and I have our eyes trained on the bogus blind trust he's proposed to transfer control of his assets to his kids while in office. Conflict of interests galore, especially after those same kids have been named to his Transition team. What's more disturbing is that Trump will likely be able to divest a huge chunk of his assets tax free thanks to a little-known loophole exploited by wealthy execs who do a stint in the executive branch of the federal government. Henry "Hank" Paulson worked it to perfection.

" yes it is awesome that people are letting everyone know how they feel.It is very important to show that everyone is happy with the results But when you start with the violence and the fires and the shootings and blocking traffic and ambulance, a lot of people who might be sympathetic turn you off. This is how Nixon got elected.

For example The minute those BLM protest turn violent is when they lost mainstream America, and the moral superiority. It is a big reason why Trump voters went out in such high numbers.

7 rural NC counties flip ‘bloodshot red’ for Trump

In NC, it's widely held that the election was a referendum on NAFTA and outsiders like Obama rebuking the Public Facilities Privacy & Security Act aka HB2/bathroom-gate.

Warning: the reader comments are not for the faint of heart.

^^^More grist for the mill. Many of the zealots are calling for repeal of the requirement that ACA plans cover contraception and counseling to women.

In 2008, the right nearly eviscerated Obama for his ties to the Rev Jeremiah Wright. But, he did not go on to name the man to his cabinet or give him a plum role heading up some federal agency. He even denounced Rev Wright's idealogy several times while on the campaign trail and at least once after the inauguration. Just this morning I watched a parade of newfound Trump lackeys dismiss the Trump-Bannon-Alt-Right nexus on both MSNBC and CNN. It didn't help matters that both networks had a bunch of lightweights on who let them manterrupt & man-splain the hell out of the election outcome. Thank goodness Chris Cuomo was having none of it with Trump mouthpiece Jason Miller in the hot seat.

Best idea I've heard in awhile: some Facebook friends are pledging that if the proposed Muslim registration comes to fruition, they will register. I LOVE the idea of people of goodwill standing with Muslims!

Well, ****, looks like Jill Stein's candidacy actually did have some value. I donated. Hopefully Susan Sarandon did, too.

Jill Stein prepares to request election recounts in battleground states

-The Guardian

Jill Stein, the Green party’s presidential candidate, is prepared to request recounts of the election result in several key battleground states, her campaign said on Wednesday.

Stein launched an online fundraising page seeking donations toward a $2m fund she said was needed to request reviews of the results in Michigan, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin.

Stein said she was acting due to “compelling evidence of voting anomalies” and that data analysis had indicated “significant discrepancies in vote totals”.

Her move came amid calls for recounts or audits of the election results by groups of academics and activists concerned that foreign hackers may have interfered with election systems.

Donald Trump won unexpected and narrow victories against Hillary Clinton in Pennsylvania and Wisconsin and may yet win Michigan, where a result has not yet been declared.

The loose coalition of academics and activists, which is urging Hillary Clinton’s campaign to join its fight, is preparing to deliver a report detailing its concerns to congressional committee chairs and federal authorities, according to two people involved. CONT. AT THE GUARDIAN

A creepy way to say "I'm sorry" too late from a creepy woman who wouldn't have had to do this if she had done the right thing.

It's the longest of longshots, but I commend Jill Stein for doing this. And word is spreading fast. Already approaching $400k in donations. If, somehow, against all odds, she pulls this off, I hereby pledge to repost every WiFi-gives-you-cancer and anti-vaxx story she circulates.
