Looking at the nominations, I knew someone would say something like that. But the issue isn't "those awful white people" getting the nominations, the issue is lack of diversity in casting in films and in the stories that are out there getting made. So don't hate on the actors who were nominated because of the color of their skin.

That's one issue.
Another issue is that films made by/for/with people of color are often marginalized by the mainstream Hollywood establishment. These films exist, they're out there, and they're ignored. I can think of 10 performances off the top of my head from nonwhite actors that were worthy of consideration this year, and 10 times that many from the last decade alone.

Larry, you're absolutely correct. But that issue still, is not the fault of any of the actors nominated.

Jordan, I completely agree with you that it is not the fault of the actors in any way. But I don't see any issue in pointing out that the Academy itself seems to have blinders on when it comes to nonwhite actors and films.

UM, noms for Chiwetel Ejiofor in 2013, Denzel Washington AND Quvenzhané Wallis in 2012, Mo'Nique, Octavia Spencer, AND Lupita Nyong'o winning from '09-'13! That's THREE black wins in FOUR years. FFS, in 2001, Denzel AND Halle won BOTH Actor and Actress! That's IN THIS CENTURY. Seriously, what do you want? When will enough be enough? The issue here is clearly mental health, not the guns.

I think what I wrote came across wrong. I was reacting to the general attitude I've been reading online today about "those white people". And there (obviously) was no way for you to know that. So I apologize if it came across that I was saying that just to you, boo.

It also seems to ignore there were some great unacknowledged performances by people of color onscreen this year. Like, almost everybody else in Creed.

I'm right there with you, Kad. I'm a big fan of SPOTLIGHT, but were I to cast a ballot, it would be for MAD MAX. I haven't seen THE REVENANT, but I have never bought what Innaritu is selling and I cannot imagine my opinion changing with this film. I was hoping against hope for THE FORCE AWAKENS to sneak in. I saw it for the third time this week and it gets better every time. Whatever plot holes I found on first viewing seem to have evaporated. Or maybe I was just looking for issues cause I was so burned by the prequels.

Really sad that Carol didn't get a BP nom, especially now that The Gawdawful Revenant has been gaining traction. Ugh. Outside the cinematography, I do not get the hype at all. My personal pick for BP would be Bridge of Spies and Art Direction and Best Actor to The Danish Girl. I was a little surprised Suffragette was shut out. I found much to like in that film. Wouldn't be angry at any Mad Max wins. I have sort of a love/hate relationship with those films in general and I think this was the best of the lot. I'm just not a huge fan of heavy metal sci-fi desert dune post-apocalypse violent quasi-camp graphic novel-esque style. Or whatever you call it. I'd be happy with love given to Room, Brooklyn, Spotlight and/or The Big Short as well. Except Christian Bale. I have no idea how he scored a nomination. I thought his indulgent performance crippled the film.

I know. I was saying Mara was also a lead. I would have also put Ruffalo in the lead category, but that's debatable, since there wasn't really a definitive lead in that movie (actually, I would have removed him completely and nominated Liev Schreiber in his place).

I'm pleased that Charlotte Rampling got a nomination for her magnificent work in 45 YEARS. I doubt she'll win, of course.
And the ongoing fascination with that MAD MAX: FURY ROAD thing just mystifies. Whatever. I'll be watching the show of course, since my husband will want to watch, otherwise I can't imagine I'd bother.

Yeah, Mad Max is the only Best Picture nominee I didn't like. The Martian is my favorite of the bunch, but there's no way it will win.

And of course Chi-Raq and its many amazing performances was snubbed. But that's not racism. Because how much is enough?
