The entire cast of Dope was fantastic, as well. But let's face it, if you're not in a prestige picture released in November or December, your chances of getting nominated are slim to none.

I'm disappointed for Lily Tomlin and Jane Fonda. I was only half-following the predictions, but for some reason I thought they were both sure things.

Well I think it's dumb to say that there is a lack of diversity. The best actors/films/directors/writers should be nominated. That's it. Race shouldn't be of any contention.
If people of color want more representation, then write those stories/create those projects. I mean we have actually quite a bit of diversity in the scope of a traditional Oscars: gay directors, Mexican directors, female writers, etc.

I'm pretty sure Stallone is the second actor ever to be nominated for the same role in two different movies. Cate Blanchett was the first, having been nominated for playing Queen Elizabeth I in the two "Elizabeth" films.
EDIT: Correction: Al Pacino in the first two Godfather movies was nominated as Michael Corleone. That makes Stallone the third.

Bing Crosby as Father Chuck O'Malley in The Bells of St. Mary's and Going My Way and Peter O'Toole as Henry II in Becket and Lion of Winter.

on the subject, both Dench and Blanchett were nominated in the same year for playing Elizabeth I in two different movies. I believe that's the first and only time two actors were nominated in the same year for playing the same person in two different movies.
Kate Winslet and Gloria Stuart were nominated for playing the same person in the same movie.
Dench won supporting. Blanchett - tragically!!!! - didn't win lead.

You say "then write [your] own stories" as if it's, like, so easy to get financing for a major motion picture. To get distribution for that feature. To get them entered and accepted to major festivals where they will be seen.
The stories are being created- this year, we had films like Tangerine or Beasts of No Nation. Films about people of color that aren't "slavery as bad" or "yasss civil rights."
In many cases, those films or performances are being seen, being well-reviewed, being lauded by other awards bodies.
They do not play well with the Academy, which is made up, notoriously, of old white people.

henrik---I read it's only happened twice where two performers were nominated for the same role in the same movie at different ages, and Kate Winslet was part of the pairing both times: Titanic (Winslet/Stuart) and Iris (Dench/Winslet).

Addressing the race issue of a whitewashed Oscar lineup, yes, it's difficult to get minority projects even made, so the "write your own stories" argument doesn't hold up well. Studios need to green-light more diverse projects. The real frustration is when they are finally produced and still overlooked by Academy voters.

Dench and Winslet seem to specialize in getting nods for playing parts played by other nominees in the same year - they've each done it twice, and as you noted, Winslet's done it twice with both nominees being from the same movie.

It's not the end of the world but I really wanted Sicario to pick up a nom for best pic ala American Sniper last year.
I'd be interested to learn what percentage of Oscar voters have a military service record as well where they grew up, their religious affiliation, and their sexual orientation. Last year, the Atlantic published an interesting article that profiled the membership at least on the surface. If Hillary, Bernie, and the Donald can profile potential supporters then so can filmmakers of all hues, genders, & persuasions.

Just saw Room . Almost gave up on it early on as the story regarding their circumstances was not explained early on and it sort of dribbled out a little at time. Eventually , you get what is happening and why. Larson is quite good as is Jacob .
Sort of surprised 1 character basically vanished never to return and no explanation was given as to what happened. You kind of catch on what happened however.
Worth your time .

Don't feel too bad for little Jacob Tremblay. Kid just picked up a Critics Choice Award and made everyone "aww" in unison with his sweet acceptance speech. Anyone know if his dad is single? Asking for a friend.

The only one that I have seen is the martian so I think that will get an Oscar as well as Matt Damon. I haven't seen the others out there yet.

Does anyone see a bit of a disconnect between the fact that there can be up to 10 Best Picture nominations but only 5 allowed in the director and acting groups. Is someone really telling me Ridley Scott did not deserve a nod for The Martian?
As far as the whole current mess, what about others such as Paul Dano and Love & Mercy? We're these not worthy of nominations? So many good performers,directors and pictures are snubbed forgetting about the controversy.How do you address that? The bottom line is you cannot
