Apparently the Ukrainian men's gymnastics team came in last in the team competition because they only had 2 gymnasts perform on 3 apparatuses versus 3 on all 6. It's strange because they claim that a team member just came back from the hospital with an injury and they couldn't change their lineup at the last minute. There is also the theory that they threw it on purpose. I'm not sure what I believe and we will probably not find out.

But, if I remember correctly, didn't Samantha Peszek get injured in Beijing right before competition? She ended up only doing uneven bars and Bridget Sloan was put in on all 4 events because they had no other option since Chellsie Memmel could only do uneven bars because of an injury as well. That's why I am not sure if the injury thing is completely true.

Yes, Peszek got injured and Sloan had to fill in on events that she wasn't originally intended to, however, that was back when there was six people on the team, making it easier to find someone to substitute in if there was an injury.Granted, Ukraine probably could have used their other two gymnasts on the events that the injured gymnast was supposed to go up on - but it is slightly more difficult to have five all around gymnasts (gymnasts who compete all of the apparatuses) for men since there's six apparatuses, opposed to the women's four.
Creating a five person gymnastics team for a three-up. three-count format is very challenging. Marta Karoyli's greatest strength (and she has many strengths!) is creating a team that has backups already in place. This year she chose Gabrielle Douglas over Ashton Locklear which many people whined about thinking Gabby was only getting in because she was the all around gold medalist four years ago. While that definitely helped her cause, Gabby also can compete on all four events, while Ashton only does bars and beam. Sure, Ashton's bars score is through the roof and would have challenged for an event final medal, but say if Aly had become injured, they would not have had someone to fill in on the events that Aly typically contributes. Having Gabby Douglas on the team still brings in a great bars score, and ensures that there's someone on the team who can go up on any of the events at any time. Not that any of this matters now, since the team final is over and luckily there wasn't any injuries!
I don't love that article because it seems to be suspicious of something and it ultimately doesn't really matter anyway.
