NBC only cares about the athletes who get medals. Though I think if Michael Phelps lost so badly, they would obsess about that for the rest of the games. The women's gymnastics team definitely deserves all of the praise and airing they get. I just hate that they make us wait so late to see it. However, I hate what they did to the men in the team final. They didn't bother to start that until 11:30 and then said they would show the rest in late night when they went off the air at midnight. I understand they didn't do so well, but I still would have liked to see it. I also noticed no care about Missy Franklin either for the same reason.

Although thanks to the almighty $$$, NBC secured that a lot of the main events are happening at a time that suits US viewers (or advertisers), so I guess that's a good thing. Not so much for other parts of the world, of course. Even for Rio it's pretty late, with athletes hanging around 'til after midnight.

I feel bad for Allyson Felix. That dive at the end by Miller doesn't seem fair somehow.

Did anyone else catch the other night after the women's beach volleyball when Bob Costas majorly flubbed up and mixed up Simone Biles and Usain Bolt and called her "Simone Boles"? It was pretty much my favorite part of any of the commentary over all. His defense was "It's late, here, folks".

The gymnastics commentary is absolutely insufferable - Nastia, who I thought would be pretty well in tune, is just there to interject as Tim Daggett continues to talk about himself, his own career, and then act absurdly shocked when people don't stick landings and make mistakes. Like last night for example when Simone rotated too quickly and made a mistake, it was like they had seen the end of the world. Oh, and if I hear the canned term "opened the door" ever again it will be too soon, because that is like Tim's FAVORITE phrase and I'm at home rolling my eyes.

Tim Daggett makes watching gymnastics painful. He's awful. Like nails on a chalkboard annoying/painful.

A Chorus Line revival played its final Broadway performance on August 17, 2008. The tour played its final performance on August 21, 2011. A new non-equity tour started in October 2012 played its final performance on March 23, 2013. Another non-equity tour launched on January 20, 2018. The tour ended its US run in Kansas City and then toured throughout Japan August & September 2018.

That's why I watch the event replays on nbcolympics.com. Jim Watson, Jon Horton and Courtney kupets carter are far more tolerable than their primetime counterparts (sorry Nastia)

"Tim Daggett is horrible, but John Horton sometimes sounds like he never watched Gymastics Meet before with his dopey questions and comments. I do love Nastia, but I do agree that Courtney is great. Before the Balance Beam even started she said she thought that Sanne Wevers had a great chance for the Gold and she was the only one. Nobody is worse than that shrill openly rooting for the USA Rowdy Gaines during Swimming

I read something from the New Yorker about the coverage of women's gymnastics. Basically they dumb it down thinking the average viewer isn't going to care what everything means. It's interesting because I don't mind Johnny Weir and Tara Lipinski when they do figure skating commentary. But, I agree that Tim Daggett is really annoying.

I wouldn't be so quick to blame it on the almighty dollar. It may surprise you to learn that NBC rarely makes a single cent off the Olympics. Between the cost of securing exclusive airing rights and basic demands of physical/technical production, they are lucky to maybe break even in most years.

Yeah, I just meant that the $7.6 billion (billion!) that NBC paid to the IOC sure helped in facilitating the timing of the events for US viewers.

Thanks for posting the articles - interesting reads. As a gymnast fan, listening to Al and Tim is incredibly infuriating. Nastia is better (and has improved tremendously in the past four years) but still not great. They focus solely on the drama of the competition, and when there is no drama? They fabricate it.

Al makes my cringe at this point, especially his comments regarding the parents of Simone Biles. He's absolutely repulsive.

Yes, I have, and no, I'm not "just now" making this realization. It becomes more and more annoying, however, as the sporting events become less about the actual athleticism going on, and instead about the drama of the event.

I wouldn't mind the buildup of drama at all (we all love the drama) but they seem to put the drama first, the athleticism second. There's so many times that we're shown a gymnast waiting to go/waiting for her score instead of watching other gymnastics happening. They can sell the drama, just back it up with the athleticism as well. But yeah, I don't expect them to change their ways any time soon.

Was anyone watching one of the equestrian events the other day and the NBC male announcer kept calling French rider Pénélope Leprevost --- Penny-lope Leprevost? I kept thinking to myself ---wouldn't a producer or his co-moderator tell hem how to pronounce Penelope?

On another note, that gal who won the hammer throw was something else. That thing is lethal.

ABC always had the best presentation, in my opinion. Just give it back to them . Although it has been so log since they broadcast them that they may do the same things NBC is doing. I remember when you got to see the whole medal ceremonies no matter who was on the podium. And if you tune in and happen to catch an American on the podium at times yo have no clue what other country is being represented along with them. It used to be that you learned a lot about other athletes from around the world during the competitions and the commentators seemed more knowledgeable about all of the athletes. Of course I am cheering for American Athletes but I can also remember when athletes from other countries were a big deal here in America when they were doing well in the games and we cheered them on in the spirit of the games. It is different now. Just my random thoughts.

A. Ryan and co are telling the truth about getting held up, but just got some of the details mixed up due to the confusion of the situation.

B. Ryan and co did get held up, but it wasn't in a cab or at a gas station, but at a house of ill repute.

C. Ryan and co did get held up, but it wasn't in a cab or at a gas station, but while attempting to procure some wacky tabacky.

Ryan Lochte and three other US Olympic swimmers lied about being robbed at gunpoint to cover up a brawl they had with a gas station security guard, authorities said Thursday.

Brazilian authorities have video of a brouhaha involving American swimmers Lochte, Jack Conger, Gunnar Bentz and Jimmy Feigen and a rent-a-cop, ABC News correspondent Matt Gutman reported.

At least one of the swimmers can be seen fighting with the security guard and one of the Americans was shown breaking down a bathroom door during the melee, according to ABC.
