AMERICAN IDOL
re: AMERICAN IDOL#150
Posted: 1/28/09 at 1:27pmI scanned through the last two episodes and I'm really over the audition phase. I'm ready to move on and see what the fuss is about. I have to say, at this point, I much prefer So You Think You Can Dance.
re: AMERICAN IDOL#151
Posted: 1/28/09 at 8:30pmGirl who sang Can't Help Loving That Man....are they freaking kidding? Did they not know the song and therefore not realize she was completely out of tune the entire time? What the hell was that?
re: AMERICAN IDOL#152
Posted: 1/28/09 at 9:19pmAs much as I hate to see the back stories- I was really touched by David Osmond and his dad Alan. I was a big Donny fan back in the day and will always love all of the Osmonds. They are good people!
re: AMERICAN IDOL#153
Posted: 1/29/09 at 12:07amSomeone sang "Gorgeous" from THE APPLE TREE...unfortunately, her rendition was horrendous.
re: AMERICAN IDOL#154
Posted: 1/29/09 at 12:11amI think a couple of the girls who got through tonight did so because they were cute.
re: AMERICAN IDOL#155
Posted: 1/29/09 at 7:13amYa think Jane? That last girl got through because of her quirky looks- NOT because she could really sing!
re: AMERICAN IDOL#157
Posted: 1/29/09 at 9:44amI have a spoiler about David Osmond. Should I post it?
re: AMERICAN IDOL#158
Posted: 1/29/09 at 9:50amSo I discovered that there are 3 nights of American Idol this week. Is this the first week that is happening this season? My DVR didnt' record 3 nights last week or the week before.

I liked the Osmond, too. Oh, no spoilers, please!
They're not troubling to hide the fact that it's kind of turning into a cute girl contest, are they?
re: AMERICAN IDOL#160
Posted: 1/29/09 at 10:01amMom and Reg-yeah, didn't I even hear VJJ-head admit that he liked the way a couple of those girls looked? He's a sucker for a hot young thing.
re: AMERICAN IDOL#161
Posted: 1/29/09 at 10:04amWhat gets me about all these talented kids is that when they get to Hollywood so many of them start falling apart. What is it? Is it that they see the competition up close and it makes them nervous? I know lot's of them seem to lose it when they're in groups.
re: AMERICAN IDOL#162
Posted: 1/29/09 at 10:06amI think they lose it because they weren't cut out for the business to begin with, or they really can't sing.
re: AMERICAN IDOL#163
Posted: 1/29/09 at 10:13amI think a lot of them are really young. Also, I think they see the starting point (I like to sing) and the end point (Ooh, I'm a star), but don't really comprehend the extraordinary amount of hard work that connects the two.
re: AMERICAN IDOL#164
Posted: 1/29/09 at 10:21amI really can't wait for Hollywood week. I think you really see who can handle the pressure. Im just so tired of the joke auditions. Not funny..
re: AMERICAN IDOL#165
Posted: 1/29/09 at 10:21amThat's for sure Reg.

"They're not troubling to hide the fact that it's kind of turning into a cute girl contest, are they?"
I do definitely think they're going much lighter on the cute girls, yes. BUT, I do have to say that most of the time I feel like it DOES go a bit beyond just them being pretty.
With Rose (the last audition last night), for instance, I REALLY enjoyed her too. Even though her voice wasn't exactly particularly strong, it WAS about more than just her good looks. She had a very cool and refreshing vibe. And, like she said herself, she's charming
I was actually sitting there HOPING they'd put her through even though she needs to work on the vocals. Of course if the vocals really start to be a problem during Hollywood week, then unfortunately she might have to be cut. But for right now at least, I think that personality really DOES make a difference. A recording artist needs to be a very solid singer, but they should also be the whole package. It's the entertainment industry- personality matters.
And I felt it was similar with a lot of the other cute girls they put through- they were all very pretty, yes, but they were also cute in personality (Casey Carlson, Megan from last night, etc.) And they all DO have quite nice voices at least.
Again, I'm not advocating for the show to become a personality contest as opposed to a singing one, and I have a feeling a lot of those girls need to REALLY work hard in Hollywood week to prove that they have the vocals for the show. But I'm just saying I see why the judges put them through at THIS point :)

I thought Rose was cool, too, and obviously great looking.
But if she sounded like that, had the same personality, but didn't have that face (and, say, needed to lose 30 pounds), I don't believe she'd be on her way to Hollywood.
Of course I realize that a whole package is, well, the whole package. But it doesn't seem like there's a equal cute-boys-with-okay-voices contingent.
re: AMERICAN IDOL#168
Posted: 1/29/09 at 11:24amthat's true, Reggie. But they seem to take the guys who need work and give them makeovers. (Clay Aiken, David Cook).
re: AMERICAN IDOL#169
Posted: 1/29/09 at 11:25amCan someone please explain what was good about the "Can't Help Loving That Man" girl?

"that's true, Reggie. But they seem to take the guys who need work and give them makeovers. (Clay Aiken, David Cook)."
yup yup :) I think the boys definitely get MUCH better looking as they go. Girls come in looking good.
I mean, heck, I didn't find Cook attractive really at all at first, and came the hair makeover and the forgetting to shave, and BANG. Now I'm completely in love with him
(No seriously though, even though his talent and personality have a TON to do with why I love him, he really is an extremely good looking person. He's got incredible features. I really just think the hair in the beginning was the most unflattering thing ever. The minute he got that worked out, he was a cutie. And that's what happens to a lot of the guys. They're very cute guys, they just have terrible hair and/or style going in)

That makes sense. I think generally that girls are better at knowing what to do with what they've got.
The other thing I've come to accept is that sometimes what the judges hear in that room must just sound different than it does on the broadcast. Often I'll think a contestant (pretty or not) is kind of "meh," and all four judges go over the moon for the audition.
re: AMERICAN IDOL#172
Posted: 1/29/09 at 11:39amsnl, whether you thought Cook was good looking or not (he grossed me out), he seemed to look a little dirty and grimey at first, and as he progressed, they had him shaved and cleaned up a bit.

Haha, ironically he actually STOPPED shaving at a specific point during the finals- he came in with minimal facial hair and by the end it was quite noticable
But no, I totally get what you mean
In general he definitely did clean up quite a bit. He started out grungier and went more clean cut
I just thought it was funny you mentioned the shaving because he literally said in one interview where someone mentioned his looks, "It's amazing what a haircut and forgetting to shave will do for you!" :P

Well, I guess I'm remembering the last time I saw him, and he was clean shaven. who knows where or when that was?
