I'm not too polite to say it: what wonderful news!
And while Obama still has almost a full year to be the one to appoint Scalia's replacement! (Though I shudder to consider the shenanigans the Republicans in the Senate will pull to avoid confirming anyone whom Obama nominates...)

He was a man of conviction who will be missed by family, friends, and those on the right. I'm certain his passing will have an impact on tonight's GOP primary debate in Charleston, SC.

Obama will never get a chance to name a replacement. Senate Republicans will filibuster that right through the election at least.
Obama could nominate Jesus and Republicans wouldn't confirm him- "a middle eastern socialist Jew? Never! We need a good Christian in there!"

Nobody's written anything terribly bad so far, but please remember—a man has died. A man who served his country, regardless of whether you agreed or disagreed with him, has died. Respect is integral here.

I imagine he would expect--indeed, hope--that in this moment all Americans would be thinking of his legacy.
I believe he did a great deal of harm to a great many people. And I think that should be remembered.

It's shaping up to be the mother of all elections. Several attorney friends have texted me reminders that SCOTUS sessions typically run from the 1st Mon in Oct to around July. Somebody please explain the difference between an intrasession appointment and a recess appointment. This stuff is somewhat byzantine to me.

Obama will have a hard time. So if he can't do it maybe Hillary will. But if he can I don't think it necessarily needs to be a liberal. Someone moderate but fair is fine with me. And it would also add a nice touch to his legacy. Just something to consider.

Gotta love the way the GOP is mishandling this. To immediately politicize this within 24 hours of Scalia's death is downright stupid, and it will not sit well with independent voters.
