This. I'm a Bernie supporter and I don't particularly like Hillary, but your friend is 100% right.

Since I am from the south, let me adapt a few of my grandma's sayings:
Bless his heart (or whatever mechanical device he had that functioned as one).
It was his time and Satan called him home.
Satan Called, Antonin Answered.

"The ugly partisanship and bitter pandering on this page SICKENS ME. No condolences to the family. Not a tiny fraction of a semblance of respect for somebody who held a life of long-standing public service. Pull it TOGETHER, people. THIS is what's wrong with our country."
It is pretty ugly and just imagine if some conservative on this board said these type of things about a liberal Supreme Court justice dying. Disagreeing with the man politically is fine but the glee in some people that a man has died is pretty sad IMO.

Every side is exactly the same! People who were sh*tty in life should be respected for reaching old age! An old conservative hack dropping dead is a tragedy!

From Elizabeth Warren:
The sudden death of Justice Scalia creates an immediate vacancy on the most important court in the United States.
Senator McConnell is right that the American people should have a voice in the selection of the next Supreme Court justice. In fact, they did — when President Obama won the 2012 election by five million votes.
Article II Section 2 of the Constitution says the President of the United States nominates justices to the Supreme Court, with the advice and consent of theSenate. I can't find a clause that says "...except when there's a year left in the term of a Democratic President."
Senate Republicans took an oath just like Senate Democrats did. Abandoning the duties they swore to uphold would threaten both the Constitution and our democracy itself. It would also prove that all the Republican talk about loving the Constitution is just that — empty talk.

Did any of you know Antonin personally,or any member of his family? I hate almost everything this guy stood for, he was 79, am I glad to see him dead at this moment in history, yes! If that's being evil so be it.

I'm sure Scalia was a fine father, husband, and friend, and his loved ones will miss him dearly.
However, I'm not his child, spouse, or friend, and only know him as a public figure with a great deal of sway over the country and my life.
I can't mourn a public figure for his private life.
It's only fitting he died while on a quail hunting trip. His whole career was spent shooting things he saw as weak.

I believe the Supreme Court can still rule with only 8 justices. There are numerous instances in the past where a justice recused himself/herself because of a conflict of interest (as Sandra Day O'Connor should have done in Bush v. Gore).
Of course there's no official way to resolve a tie with an even number of justices, which is why an odd number is traditional.

They can rule without 9, but if they are split the lower court's ruling stands.

I did not say you had to care about him but people jumping up and down with glee saying they are glad he is dead is a bit much IMO. He was a human being and everyone of us has faults and I hope when we die people don't want to do a tap dance on our coffin and say things like "die motherf******. I don't know if you are a religious person but I am and I was taught about forgiveness. When someone dies I can forgive them of things they have done, even hateful speech/ideas because I know we are all human. Finally, I am not trying to defend his words/actions just saying that the "hate" spewed on this thread is over the top IMO.

If people want to tap dance on our graves that has no impact on us. And yes, it would be nice to be the kind of person who doesn't inspire people to want to dance on their graves. I think that's something to aspire to.
People being gleeful here about Scalia's death have no affect on anyone. However, the horrible words of Scalia's and his horrible actions had deleterious effects on the actual lives of lots of people. So, it doesn't seem "nice" to say bad things about a dead person? Tough.

Yeah. Show some respect for the disgusting mother f*cker and forgive him for all the harm he needlessly caused to countless people for no good reason!

Bustle, of all sources, has a pretty interesting overview of Sri Srinivasan's history. His nomination to his current position won unanimous Senate approval and the guy is a bit of an enigma. Worked under both the Bush and Obama administrations. Clerked for Republican appointees. Successfully argued for the defeat of DOMA and for marriage equality, supported affirmative action and argued against voter rights restrictions. But, he also defended right wing heroes like Exxon from a lawsuit by Indonesian villagers accusing the energy giant's security forces of torture and murder and Enron crook Jeffrey Skilling against financial fraud charges. Right now, you gotta think Republicans are praying he's not the nominee.

Sorry for the double-post, but I just realized that this awful man might get the last laugh from the grave. Justice Kagan already recused herself from the current affirmative action case before the court. In that scenario, a 4-4 tie was apparently thought quite possible. Now, with just SEVEN justices weighing in, the possibility of a 4-3 ruling against affirmative action is more likely. Well, shiiiit. Nicely played, Satan.

Nobody can predict these rulings. Did anybody think Justice Roberts would vote the way he did on the Obamacare issue?

WWASD? I can't think of any topic on which I would agree with Scalia, and I admittedly have no standing to speak for him, but I feel fairly confident that he would not want a vacant seat on the court for A MINIMUM OF 15 MONTHS.

Ruth Bader Ginsburg had this to say about Scalia's death. They became good friends after the death of her husband and shared a love for opera:
Toward the end of the opera Scalia/Ginsburg, tenor Scalia and soprano Ginsburg sing a duet: 'We are different, we are one,' different in our interpretation of written texts, one in our reverence for the Constitution and the institution we serve. From our years together at the D.C. Circuit, we were best buddies. We disagreed now and then, but when I wrote for the Court and received a Scalia dissent, the opinion ultimately released was notably better than my initial circulation. Justice Scalia nailed all the weak spots—the 'applesauce' and 'argle bargle'—and gave me just what I needed to strengthen the majority opinion. He was a jurist of captivating brilliance and wit, with a rare talent to make even the most sober judge laugh. The press referred to his 'energetic fervor,' 'astringent intellect,' 'peppery prose,' 'acumen,' and 'affability,' all apt descriptions. He was eminently quotable, his pungent opinions so clearly stated that his words never slipped from the reader’s grasp.
Justice Scalia once described as the peak of his days on the bench an evening at the Opera Ball when he joined two Washington National Opera tenors at the piano for a medley of songs. He called it the famous Three Tenors performance. He was, indeed, a magnificent performer. It was my great good fortune to have known him as working colleague and treasured friend.
Once upon a time in America, I guess, we routinely agreed to disagree. Ruth Bader Ginsburg is a class act, and if she tells me Justice Antonin Scalia was an honorable man, well maybe he was.
But she and I can still agree to disagree.
