1) I find it hilarious that the family's last name is "Black" and the character's name is "White" Rabbit. This is the case of the Black Family versus the White Rabbit. LOVE IT!

2) I find it odd that Disney would offer the family $500 plus VIP tickets. That's really hard to believe. Are they going to offer that to anyone who claims racism?

It leads me to believe that perhaps something DID happen, and the family blames it on racist intentions to blow it out of proportion.

3) TheatreDiva90016 - that photo bring back so many memories of that parade. They wouldn't even let you play Ursula?? Wasn't Ursula a float that transitioned into an actor on top wearing the arms and a mask?

I think Disney gave the Blacks some money to put a quick end to something that could have dragged on and on. I do NOT believe that it was an admission of guilt in any way. It's easier to placate them with a gift than to keep fighting with them.

Top fin is correct! The front part is foam and my entire head is in it.

The parade was the 35th anniversary parade. They had Ariel, but they didn't have Ursula.

I used to wear similar costumes a few summers for children's programs at libraries. I wore one where the best place to look out was high, so I had to have someone on "Don't walk on children" watch.

There are many people today-black, white, etc-who will claim preposterous things to see what they can get for free.

I took my godchild to see Curious George Live and she was saddened to see the Man With The Yellow Hat smoking in an alley and a George sans his head smoking. Kinda broke the 4th Wall.

I actually witnessed a similar type of racism years ago, so I tend to believe this story, unfortunately.

It happened at a large supermarket in LA (Von's), where a cashier would give change back to the customer in their hand --- but only if the customer was white. If the customer was non-white, the cashier would put the change on the counter. She would not touch the non-white. I was so shocked the first time that I saw the incident, I assumed it was just a fluke and that I was imagining a slight to a customer. Everytime I went back to the store I would try to find the same cashier and I would stand in her line to see if my suspicions were correct.

Sure enough, she was a repeat offender. White - change in hand. Non-white - change on counter. I witnessed this behavior time and time again. I needed to convince myself that "she wasn't having an off day."

I often thought of complaining to the manager and telling him to keep an eye on her, but this was many years ago and I knew I would sound like a crazy woman. And this was way before cell cameras, and it might have been before supermarkets had video cameras at each register. I was extremely busy with work and attending night classes, and then I transferred back East, so I never had the time (or took the time) to report the behavior. I will say that I don't regret many things in life, but I do regret not having reported the woman.

Her form of racism was so subtle, I doubt many people ever noticed. But once you did take notice, it was unmistakable.

So, you spent a lot of time making sure you got in this persons line to watch her do this, but you didn't have the time to report it?

Why put so much effort into seeing if she was doing it, and then not say or do anything?

I don't have a good answer for that. But it was a long time ago (probably about 30 years ago). You can see the current skepticism, disbelief, and cynacism that goes on when people doubt the White Rabbit story today. I think I didn't want to go through that "she sounds crazy" thing at that time. Like I said, it was one of the regrets that I have.

True story: I was attacked by Dopey. I might have deserved it though.

The 7 dwarfs all came out at one time (like every half hour I think) and stood in a line side by side. You had to stand in a line (there were markers) in front of whichever dwarf you wanted to have your picture taken with and they would come out for 15 minutes for photos.

I believe it was set up this way because it was too hot for them to be out in their costumes more than 15 minutes at a time (it was over 100° in FL in August).

Anyhoo, I was with my boyfriend at the time and he wanted to get me with as many of the dwarfs as possible for a collage or something he was going to make. So I get in the line for the first dwarf, have my pic taken, then run to the next line and so on.

I was trying to do a different silly pose for each picture, so when I get to Dopey, she (I'm pretty sure it was a woman, although I have no way of really knowing) puts her arm around me and I grab her ear. Dopey has really big ears.

She freaks out, pushes me away and proceeds to start kicking me.

Now obviously it wasn't "kicking" like she was trying to seriously hurt me. More like a mini freak out, kind of flailing about.

Then they called time and the dwarfs went back inside.

I never found out why, but we came to the conclusion that maybe the Dopey costume had some kind of fan or mesh breathing vent in the ears and I unknowingly blocked her air. I felt horrible.

The picture btw is hilarious. Without knowing the backstory it just looks like Dopey is going all Bruce Lee on me.

We did inquire at the park office to make sure that Dopey was ok however. Apparently the guy who comes out with the dwarfs and calls time when the 15 minutes are up had reported it because the woman at the office laughed. "That was you? Don't worry, Dopey is fine".

She also offered to comp our entrance fee to the next park we were going to visit, which I thought was super nice.

LaurenB, how is your story a similar type of racism? In other words, how can racism be proved as the reason the bunny didn't hug that particular child?

Jane2 - To answer your question, what I observed was not a blatent act of racism... until you observed the cashier over a period of weeks, and with a variety of customers. It was not until then that you noticed that she would only place money in a white person's hands, never in a non-white person's hands. Her behavior was absolutely consistent over time. She would never touch a non-white.

Similarly with the White Rabbit, you wouldn't know that the rabbit was racist unless you observed him over a period of time and could see his interaction with all races.

I'm not saying that the White Rabbit was definitely racist. But what I am saying is that I don't discount the story out of hand. If he is racist, then it's the kind of subtle racism that I observed with the cashier, only provable over time.

I just hope that the security cameras caught enough action that could either substantiate the charge, or exonerate the rabbit.

Believe me, I couldn't believe my eyes (or the conclusions my mind was coming to) with regard to the cashier. I gave her the benefit of the doubt, time after time after time.

I actually injured myself while playing Rudolph in the Christmas parade. Twisted my back very badly. The Disney doctor sent me back to work on muscle relaxers so, the following parade I did even more damage. I just stopped dancing and walked over to a lead. I was told to keep performing so I went for my zipper and they hustled me through an emergency exit through the crowd.

Ended my dancing for good...

In case no one already knew, another family is suing Disneyland because they find the person who plays Donald Duck to be a racist.
