Hey all. It is a bit weird on the Board tonight, once again!
Nice of you to actually serve Jury Duty Addy. It is something that more thoughtful people should. Otherwise, well, the system does not work.

(please tell me Dame is not the defendant?)
Lock him up and throw away the key!

!2 Angry Addys - I love it. Maybe I can be the forewoman?
I actually really like the judge. He runs a good courtroom!
Can't talk about the case, brd.
And, YWIW, I am actually really happy to have the experience of jury service. I've never been on a jury before. I usually do the usual jury duty waiting game and then don't get selected, so this is an interesting experience. There is quite a collection of people on this jury. I've been trying to figure out the reasoning of the lawyers who made the selections. I am pretty sure the defense attorney didn't want me, but he probably didn't have any more refusals. (Or whatever the term is).
(and, you are welcome in the Adult Smoking thread any time - it's always happy here!)
oh, and I missed giving Cookie a big *HUG*.
So, I'll leave it for him and he can pick it up in the morning...
Just popping in for a quick hello before I turn in. It was so wonderful to meet so many of you this weekend! (Hope you're better, Wexy!)
My husband was dismissed from jury duty once because when the judge asked him, "Do you think you could give this man a fair trial?" he answered, "No." So then judge asked "Why not?" My husband's response was "Because I knew that guy was guilty the minute I laid eyes on him."
And he wasn't "trying" to "get out of" jury duty. He was just being honest!
Hi Miss P! Hope you had a wonderful trip!!
I am so sorry that I'm locked away and can't be in better touch with DG and ckeaton and the others who are visiting!
Some of favorite people on this board frequent this thread.
I think I have to learn to smoke more often.
And, the term in California is "pre-emptory challenge" unless a judge finds cause. I don't know if the same term is used in NY. Or, Chicago for that matter.
I don't think I'll ever be called again (I hope) because of good old allergies! Last time I served I couldn't breathe because they don't have fresh air, it's all conditioned and I was a mess. So the next time I was called, I explained why I couldn't serve - they excused me from that one, and I'm hoping they have me marked down as a medically excused juror.
YWIW - make it home! It's a wonderful place.
And, I think that's what they call it in NY as well... thank you!
Jane, that's interesting. I'm glad you don't have to serve if it makes you sick!
I have been excused by the Judge a couple of times because. Once, I had to talk to the judge in chambers because the civil case looked exactly like a civil fraud ring I had litigation experience with when I was doing civil lit back in the day. It was a traffic accident fraud where you are hit from behind with no place to go and then rear end the guy in front of you . . .
I could not say it in open court, because it might prejudice the other jurors.
I was an alternate once but never got to go into deliberations.
Interesting. The Judge excused a number of potential jurors - after having private conversations with them. I don't know why, obviously.
I'm looking forward to the deliberation process...
Oh, goodness, Addy! I'm still so ditzed-out that it JUST occurred to me that you have jury duty THIS WEEK when the entire BWW Board is in NYC to visit you! Ouch.
Well, as everyone has been saying, you're doing something so important.
I served once, and I will never forget it. It really helped me to respect "the system" because the people on the jury were just so committed to seeing justice served. The case was sad though.

Y, we use the same term. I have never made it to voir dire on jury duty. Once on jury duty I was asked before being released to be part of a mock death penalty trial, but I told them I was impartial.
The closest I got was settling on the courthouse steps, literally, that that was many years ago. Now, the closest I get is watching the BWW Idol results come in!
Good luck at the lotto tomorrow.
This is a sad case as well...
And, yes, the timing with everyone in NY is so frustrating.
I was surprised that I was selected. It came up during voir dire that I have done pro-bono work for the Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP). This is a drug case. I can certainly be fair and impartial as I listen to the testimony, but I feel very strongly about anti-drug campaigns.
As long as you are impartial and listen to the evidence, that is all that matters.
Most people have problems even doing that.
well, folks, I should get to bed... tomorrow is going to be a long day!
Wishing everyone a wonderful night!
I was on a jury for a murder trial. It was pretty obvious the guy was guilty and we handed down that verdict. But I, the naive sucker, felt sorry for the guy because there was something very touching about him. So I'm sitting there crying on the jury while we handed down the verdict. Anyway, in the elevator on the way out of the court, the lawyer pulled me aside and mentioned my crying. He said, I just thought you'd feel better about your verdict if I tell you that this guy has committed murder after murder. I did feel better once he told me that.
I had a lot of reasons for being excused, (like Wexy, mostly work-related), and I disclosed them to the judge and attorneys. But when the judge asked me if I could give the defendant a fair trial, I said, "Of course I would try." And they kept me.
What amazed me was that this was such a terrible and serious crime, and yet there wasn't a word about it in the papers. It concerned me because it seems as though crime is the ONLY thing the papers and TV-news report.
Which lawyer told you that? Prosecution or Defense?
