I read 1984 the summer after I graduated from college (I think it was the first in my "how have I not read this" series). I was still working on campus at the bookstore and had multiple people come up and say how much they hated it when they had to read it for class. Then they'd look at me like I was crazy when I said I was just reading it for fun. It's such an amazing book, I don't know what's wrong with people.

I loved the movie with John Hurt in it. I have never read the book, though. How shameful is that?...

Just finished Frankenstein.

Next up: probably Wide Sargasso Sea. I doubt that I'll have a moment for outside reading until this semester is over, though.

That's interesting SG. After I read the book I watched the John Hurt movie and kept thinking that if I hadn't already read the book I'd have had no idea what was going on half the time.

ABSteel, I'm a huge fan of dystopian literature in general, but the older I get the more possible so many of them seem. It gets scary sometimes.

Frankenstein grew on me after this reading. I had read it before and didn't really appreciate it. I think I was too young. Mary Shelley's prose is so transfixing.

I'm reading The Grapes of Wrath. It's a little slow, but the language and message are beautiful.

I just finished reading The Namesake by Jhumpa Lahiri.

I'm reading a bunch of books at once which include: Dune, Atonement, Jane Eyre, Lolita, Possession, The Horse and His Boy, and The Devil Wears Prada. I'm a little ambitious I guess and having a hard time finding just one to stick with.

love love love love!!!!

this series of OZ comics by Eric Shanower were released in the 80s & quickly went out of print, but theyve recently been republished in one complete volume & they are SOOOOOO WONDERFUL!!!!!

besides the gorgeous artwork (heavily inspired by Mucha...wait'll you see how he draws Ozma!!!), the stories are so wonderful!!! they are completley true to the spirit of the original OZ books!
absolutley in earnest, no irony or "the dark side of Oz" kind of thing....just lovely stories of adventure & friendship!!!

& its such a treat (& so clever) to see minor characters like Billina & Eureka in the spotlight!

I just finished a book my little sister gave me to read on a car trip. It's called Twilight by Stephanie Meyer and apparently it is quite the rage in middle school. I may be in college, but I can still appreciate a good young adult read, especially one involving vampires and love and teen angst.

I am looking forward to reading the sequel, New Moon when I go home for the summer.

Recently finished A Shoot In Cleveland by Les Roberts. Just finished Angels In America by Tony Kushner, and started The Heidi Chronicles by Wendy Wasserstein. After that will be Art & Lies by Jeanette Winterson.

I'm now reading The Road by Cormac McCarthy. So far, it's really good.

I'm re-reading 1984 (read it in the beginning of 8th grade, I was the only person who enjoyed and I was probably the only one who didn't sparknote it) and reading The Diary of a Young Girl (for school)

I'm reading The Road by McCarthy as well. I haven't been able to put it down.

RE: Rice's Vampire Chronicles:
The more times I read through those books the more I realize that Louis is just an insufferable, whiny twit.

He totally is a whiny twit, but he's also my favorite character. I suspect that's because I'm an angst whore, though. I preferred Interview and Body Thief because he was more of a presence in those two (though I really liked Queen of the Damned, too). The Vampire Lestat didn't do anything for me. I think I prefer reading about Louis (preferably from Lestat's perspective) than reading from his POV, but I like that character a lot either way. Then you get into Merrick, though, and everyone is so dreadfully OOC that it doesn't matter.
