Juggling five different books right now:

The Cherry Orchard by Anton Chekhov
Eugene Onegin by Alexander Pushkin
The Castle in the Forest by Norman Mailer
Written on the Body by Jeanette Winterson
Yellow Dog by Martin Amis

I plan to finish the first two today. Up next: American Fascists: The Christian Right and the War on America by Chris Hedges and March by Geraldine Brooks.

The Freedom Writers Diary...by Erin Gruwell and the Freedom Writers.

The movie "Freedom Writers" was the movie based on the story of these kids that had Erin Gruwell as their teacher and how she changed their lives, made them give up violence, go to college...blah blah blah

This is the actual book that the real kids published. It's not a bad read, but I'm having a really hard time believing that 9th grade remedial English students wrote the way this book is written. To me the language and grammar is just too good. It also has this "instant change" vibe to it....like they met this teacher and they were instantly changeed....all of them. Guess I'm just reading it with too much of a cynical teacher's eye.

"Marley & Me" is very cute.

I'm reading "Lord of the Flies" for my English class, and I started "Girl With a Pearl Earring" today. I'm not really enjoying "Lord of the Flies", but I'm only on Chapter 5, so hopefully it will get better.

There wouldn't be lights bright enough!

I just started it today and am about 30 pages into it. It's very interesting. I don't think it's saying anything new, but Hedges is a skilled writer and interpreter of religious theory. Mostly, he's been talking about how those on the religious right manipulate The Bible to their own ends and the radical theory of Dominionism, which is an even more radical for of Evangelical Christianity. It's worth looking at, but if you've been following politics over the last decade, there won't be any revelations here.

I am beginning the third part of Rice's Vampire Trilogy, "Queen of the damned" Trying to get into it, but it is slow going. Basically I am just biding my time until Deathly Hallows is released.

Pippin, Queen of the Damned is my favorite of the Vampire Chronicles, but I'll admit it does have some very slow parts. The story of the twins is sufficiently facinating to keep me going though.

The more times I read through those books the more I realize that Louis is just an insufferable, whiny twit. I think The Vampire Lestat is a far more interesting memoir. After you finish QotD, assuming you're not sick of Anne Rice, you should continue to The Tale of the Body Thief. It's very different from the other three as it's just one adventure for Lestat, but there are some very interesting theological discussions imbedded in the story.

AC126748, the review I read said the book makes some outlandish claims and comparisons and therefore lost credibility.

My boss, Rev. Michael Piazza, recently released a book called The Real antiChrist: How America Sold Its Soul, which outlines how the religion of American Christian fundamentalism is antithetical to the life and teachings of Jesus. It is a good primer for those wanting to engage the discussion who lack in-depth theological training. As near as I can tell, the two books have similar targets but different approaches.

I just finished reading Queen of Babble by Meg Cabot 2 days ago. I really liked it. It's like her other books in the "Boy" series. It was very cute & funny. A fun read.

Picked up "Devil wears Prada" for airplane reading. I had heard the book was much better than the movie. The movie must have really sucked.

Considering I just received a copy of Atlas Shrugged in the mail (for entering the Fountainhead essay contest last year), I'll probably start reading it. It's a bit longer than my last Ayn Rand read (Anthem), but I think I'll persevere. Has anybody read Atlas Shrugged? Opinions?

I love Lestat, and Blood and Gold: The Story of Marius. I loved the ancient Rome stuff. Vittorio was a very nice read too.

I just finished reading "Can You Keep a Secret?" by Sophie Kinsella. I really liked it. I've really been into her lately. I started her Shopaholic series, but I'm getting the next one at my library. I also read "The Undomestic Goddess" which was pretty good.

That's why I liked it, actually. I'm a total fashion whore. I couldn't get through all the murders.

Patrick Bateman is 100% superficial. He's obsessed with appearance and reputation. It's completely in his character to make a mental checklist of designers, and art work, and clubs, etc, etc, etc.

My favorite chapter is the Whitney Houston one. Love it.
