Actually it's quite different. I think there should be stronger gun laws here. I don't think there ever will be. The US is a HUGE land mass. There are states with cultures so vastly different politically that they seem to be from different planets, let alone countries.
One of the best lefty thinkers I know wrote something about how he doesn't actually think changing gun control laws would work in a place like the US. And I came to a feeling about resignation.
I think Yawper is correct that, "American disrespect for and devaluation of others is" the topic we must look at. And loud, bombastic, empty spectacle onscreen in which violence is the cinematic language and body counts are the registers of entertainment value both reflect and contribute to a desensitized culture. That's all part of the post-Reagan selfishness that the Ayn Randians of this political moment still foster. People actually hear the explicit message that caring about others is a negative.
It's all part of the American soup that's turning rancid.

The UK is made up of a huge amount of cultures and backgrounds, we have areas in the UK that are gang areas, terrifying cities and towns etc, the difference is that we don't have guns.
People can argue all they want, left or right, they can say it wont change anything and blah blah blah but if you HONESTLY think that gun crime will not fall by banning guns you must be insane. It's not even something that you need to think about, less guns = less gun crime. It will take a long time for America to get illegal guns off the streets and as with all countries some will still filter through, but banning guns is the first step in lowering America's terrible gun crime statistics, that's the bottom line.
To this day i have NEVER heard one viable argument as to why Americans should have the right to carry guns.
The moment we had the Dunblane massacre here we changed everything because we were so shocked by the devastating loss of life, why is America not reacting the same, how many dead young people is to many?
Jane, i have never thought violence in entertainment makes someone go out and kill, Scream had a line in the film that whilst camoy i always thought was true 'Movies don't create psycho's, Movies make Psycho's more creative'. A person who is going to kill was always going to kill

We have had mass murders throughout history and a huge portion were way before tv and videogames were around.

We need sensible gun laws - which includes closing the gun show loophole.
And, we need to stop allowing the NRA to run this country.
In my opinion, we sometimes have to legislate to factor in the 1% of crazies - it is the only way to protect the rest of us.
It is easier is some states to buy a gun than it is to buy a joint. SMH.

How about considering that they both are a problem?
If the man was mentally disturbed and brought a knife to the theater, it would not have had the same devastation.
On top of that, I don't think there are any federal laws that prevent minor access to guns.

I don't think Japan is currently in the business of bombing civilians with unmanned drones though. Hmm....

We have almost sexualized gun ownership - whose is bigger, who can get more bang for their buck...
This guy apparently had Kevlar, tear gas, a rifle, and other weapons.
I am not sure how some can say that guns are not at least part of the problem in the US when you see images like this.

I don't disagree, but my argument is about the guns, you can have a world of crazies who want to shoot each other, but if they cant access guns then they cant use them. The bottom line is that the country is a wonderful country but has a 3rd world attitude when it comes to guns. It's absurd and its time for America to catch up with the rest of the free world, and stop allowing the idiot NRA run the bloody country.
OH and PS, the Presidents speech was so wishy washy when talking about this tragedy

If you bothered to fully review the gun stat links I posted earlier you'd see that's not the case.

I used to think that way but now, not so much. How can you discount parents buying little children a GAME which makes it fun to kill as many people as possible? Little children who are in their formative years. These children see that their parents are ok with the fun of killing. I don't think there's any proof that this doesn't affect their attitude towards life in general. That's the way I'm looking at it today.

Little kids however should be monitored on what they are allowed to play. This massacre also throws up the question of why an earth was a 3 month old baby and a 6 year old girl at a Batman film, another epic mess up.

THIS is the rancid American culture I'm talking about.

If you can't make the midnight preview of a movie because no one can watch your child? Well, that's parenthood. The movie is not going anywhere; see it when you can get a babysitter.
If you wanted to put a three month old in a loud movie theater made even louder by cheering fans, then that is a problem.

I tend to agree that stricter gun control laws would be helpful. But namo's (and others) point about our gun culture is really quite correct.
