Sir Anthony might help out, but I think he's got a smaller estate and fortune than the Crawleys would have anyway.
Matthew also didn't grow up the same way Mary did. He is from a pretty solidly middle class family (both of his parents worked) and went through school and became a lawyer. Even though being the Earl of Grantham and living in a sweet house like Downton would be fantastic, it wasn't the life he imagined having and it's not the only life he's equipped to live. The money isn't nearly as important to him as it is to Mary, who faces the possibility of seeing everything she knew slipping away. Coupled with the honor that romantico mentioned, of course Matthew isn't jumping at the chance to take the Swire fortune.

I'm not against this idea however, I wish they would consider it AFTER DOWNTON ABBEY has run it's course. Apparently,Julian Fellows is not sure if there will be a 4th season. So,I wonder if the last episode of season 3 or the Christmas Episode will put some sort of closure,in case he decides to continue.

Posted: 9/30/12 at 7:12pmEven though this is for spoilers I still hate to say anything. I think tonight was the best so far of Series 3. A lot crammed into 47 minutes.

I know - it was chock-full! Again, both great and dreadful things occurred.

***SPOILERS***
EXCELLENT episode tonight. I really hope they can somehow smooth things over with Sir Anthony. I always liked him and feel he is a good man. I think he did what he thought was right but his timing really sucked.
Also relieved to hear the good news about Mrs.Hughes.

Mrs.Hughes' good news hasn't been confirmed, though, has it? I mean we didn't actually hear it from the doctors mouth - I don't think that's the last of it.
Also, how did Tom and Sybil flit over from Dublin for this wedding? Who sent them the money this time? They're back next week too, I see.

I was wondering the same thing, but I guess it's like when Matthew and William came home every weekend from World War Day Camp.

Huss-I watched it.
So sad...
And the preview for the next episode didn't look very hopeful, either.

Dreaming,
I try to avoid seeing what is coming up on the next episode. It has been a very good series so far and curious to see how far they take it with Lady Grantham she is not a happy camper.

So I cried like the big baby I am, but I got really emotional over Maggie Smith's scene after Sybil died, especially the shot of her walking into the drawing room.
And I'm also really looking forward to how long Cora's coolness towards Robert will last. He is the literal worst, to be honest.

I had only cried at one other episode of a TV show - the series finale of 'Six Feet Under' - before tonight. I was teary all through Sybil's agonizing death throes but they started to fall when Cora was sitting with Sybil's body in the bedroom. Her attempt to maintain composure when speaking to Mary was so truthful to the auto-pilot that sometimes clicks on when we suffer trauma. Elizabeth McGovern is a great actress.
I thought I had finished with crying like a nine-year-old girl but then Maggie Smith walked down a hallway and I lost my **** again. So sad. So brilliant.

Posted: 10/15/12 at 8:20amIt is amazing how much she can convey with her back to the camera. I thought she was going to fall down and crumble. The strength and compassion that this character has is amazing. I to was very impressed with Elizabeth McGovern tonight, sometimes she can be wooden but tonight was just a masterclass of acting. I have a feeling that she will be cold to him till the end of the season and I am expecting a huge fight between her and Robert. I was a little disappointed with Mary, I kinda wanted her to let loose on Matthew, maybe it is just an attestant to the Crawley woman as to how strong they are and how the can handle grief.

Posted: 10/15/12 at 8:29amWhat a magnificent episode. Carolineorchange21 I was almost like you, except I was sobbing like mad when Sybill was dying. Dame Maggie Smith's walk to the drawing room broke my heart afresh.

Posted: 10/15/12 at 8:33amI spend about 95% of Elizabeth McGovern's scenes laughing at her face, but her work in this episode and Edith's wedding episode was incredible. I actually think she probably does her best work in her scenes with the daughters.

Posted: 10/15/12 at 8:57amI thought it was rather cold of Mary when Edith asked if maybe now they can try and be more close and Mary said something like, no, I doubt that will happen.Usually something like this would bring them closer. I kept thinking all season long something would happen to Bates. Now, Julian Fellows did say there would be only ONE death this season, right? I sure hope so.

How many more episodes are left in the season?
I think Mary was a little cold but I think the two sisters will make their peace with one another, as different as they are.
I think Cora and Lord Grantham need to have a big fight and let out their mutual pain and guilt. (I'm guessing Cora blames herself to a degree for not forcing the issue more or just taking Sybil out of there herself.)
I think Tom might end up taking off and Mary and Matthew will adopt the baby and find out she cannot have a child-just a guess.
