While on a whistle-stop campaign swing through Missouri on Thursday, John Kerry's vice presidential running mate, John Edwards of South Carolina, affirmed the Democratic ticket's anti-gay marriage stance, saying they had no objection to Missouri's overwhelming vote this week in favor of a state constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage. "We're both opposed to gay marriage and believe that states should be allowed to decide this question,' Edwards told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, adding, however, that they oppose a federal constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage.
so, they appose gay marriage as well, then???
"can we say we're against gay marriage?"
"of course we can, who else are they gonna vote for?"
*snickering*
"oh yeah, duh."

So are the people that are going to walk off the job during the RNC still going to do it?

This isn't a surprise - they both have consistently stated this same position. There are many in the Democratic party who are not against it, but party leadership will never espouse this view - it's too alienating. And the Democrats are always looking to assuage the masses.
Let's face it, these guys are having an uphill battle DENOUNCING gay marriage; can you imagine their chances of landing in the White House if they said they supported it? But there's a huge difference in actively politicizing anti-gay sentiment -- which W and his Anti-PFLAG dad of a silenced dyke Vice Prez have done repeatedly, aggressively Remember the press conference he held in prime time, during the spate of gay weddings? When Iraq was particularly ugly and he needed to show "leadership" vis a vis his "values?" Where was the compassion to accompany his draconican conservatism; he merely sucked up to his "pro-family" base. He could've at least thrown his Log Cabin boys a bone-r, no? But not a single word that might actually help UNITE people on this cause...like to ask AMericans to accept gay people as patriots and citizens. Oh no, that would enflame the fundamentalists. The moral stand taken by this "uniter" was, "I believe in the sancitity of marriage between one man and one woman..." What courage he shows!
I'm not thrilled that the two Johns must consistently appear passive aggressive homophobes. But is it their likely POV? I doubt it. I'm not pleased they keep saying "we were right to go to Iraq with what we knew." NO, we were NOT. And most dems at the convention felt that way. But what the hey. So we are united in dumping Bush, in my mind, that's a positive. This is an every-vote-counts election, and Kerry and Edwards are in no-win situation; expediency dictates thier stand. These are times in which a regime change is needed, and big shock politics requires trade-offs.
I completely agree with Auggie. This is not news. Kerry has all along said that he opposes gay marriage, and that states should be able to decide their own policies on marriage. Marriage is, after all, a state and not a federal issue.
But he voted against the horrible homophobic Defense of Marriage Act: one of only 14 Senators and the only Senator up for re-election to do so. He did not let his personal views on gay marriage blind him to what was blantant and disgusting legislative gay-bashing and for that, I support him and trust him wholeheartedly.
Check this out. It's what his "gay pal" had to say about it, and it sounds a whole helluvalot better than anyone else on the political spectrum.
