d, i feel your pain., i really do. as scared as you are of disenfrachisement is as scared as i am of any dalliance with appeasement in the face of terror. we have to have a civilization from which to exclude people (not that i am advocating exclusion). i honestly believe that the next four years will look diferent from the last four, even with god's hand picked man in power.
Well, I haven't lost hope. This was an expected turn of the tide. It certainly makes things interesting. I'm not going to fret for our nation until I see these polls at the end of October.
But, very disappointing that the high road doesn't seem to work anywhere as well as negative ads.
oh, jrb, it never has. the high road is a utopian illusion that has never existed in politics. has it gotten marginally worse lately? sure, but it's been there for years and years. go back and read the kind of slurs that were made historically (as far back as the revolution) and they'll keep today in perspective. but let's recall that folk on your side have been calling the president a liar, a murderer, a nazi, an idiot, a moron, a fascist, the personification of all evil in the world today for the better part of a year now. both sides use it and it's folly to think it's going to change any time soon.

Papa - A couple of things come to mind with your thoughts. Do you think Kerry winning would really lead to appeasement? And what exactly has been the effect of our current course that you think has reduced the threat of terrorism here? The thing that would do that - or, at least the thing that's talked about internationally, is a change in direction with Israel - and I don't see that happening.
And I feel you are right, the next four years could be very different. I just think there's a chance they'll be worse, at least from my perspective. I understand your points completely concerning this, and can see it as a possibility. BUT, I'm just not sure that history allows me to say it's a probablility.
Well, papa, you GOPs don't like to be all lopped into the same group. Why are ya doing the same back? You can't keep changing the rules!
My point is that KERRY has tried to take the high road. I am one of those Bush haters, so I am well aware of what has been said and done otherwise.
I just admired the idea of bringing it down. I guess this didn't work, therefore, give me a fistful of mud, and let's get ready to rumble!!!!
d, i disagree about a change in direction regarding israel. the only change in direction the mad hatters of the hate block would champion is the u.s. handing them the tools with which they might finally drive those dirty jews into the sea. until there is a change within the palestinian side in which there is a true embrace of the idea of peaceful coexistence, there will be no peace. as long as palestinian leaders mouth peace to the international community while advocating war to their people and telling them that it is only a matter of time before they return home to a palestine free from the scourge of the vile zionists, there will be no peace. further still, until arabic leaders stop using the issue as a means with which to hide their own failings from their peoples there will be no peace.
could israel be a better partner, sure? but facing a generation thaat has been rasied to hate and see their destiny as a complete destruction of the jewish state i might be a bit less than charitable in my dealings as well (you do recall they were handed a deal giving them 97% of what they wanted during bubba's reign and they spit on it). until there is palestinian leadership that is willing to embrace and espouse a real peace and a peaceful coexistence both in english and arabic there will be no peace in the holy land.

papa - the interesting thing about your position is it assumes we have a vested interest in the plight of Israel. Not that I'm saying we shouldn't, but it is that connection more than anything else that affects our 'standing' with the rest of the world. When I said something about our relationship with Israel, my interest was in the future of our own country with terrorism, not Israel's continued struggle.
I'm always interested in Plum's opinion in these matters.
i think we do have a vested interest in the only true functioning democracy in the middle east. but i don't think that it's our views that will change terrorism. we could condemn israel and level sanctions on them and it would not do a damn bit of good to improve our standing in the arabic world. israel is just the convenient excuse to hate america. israel is just the coinvenient excuse to hate in most of the arabic world and in much of the world at large. nothing short of genocide will appease the hard liners and as we've seen here in our own election, appealing to the basest principles is still pretty damned effective. having seen the jewish people subjected to genocide once, would it truly be right to offer them up as a stop gap in hopes of gathering a few years or decades of peace?
unfortunately, appeasement is seen as weakness forced by violence which will instead of gaining sympathy, merely burn home the lessons that violence works, that the greater the violence the greater the victory. it's capitulation to blackmail.
I just got a sick feeling....

Don't worry, MJR, there's still 9 weeks to the election, this is the Repub's week to propogandize, this is to be expected. Bush still has plenty of troubles to come tumbling out of the closet and the environment is ripe for it.
Nevertheless, get involved at whatever level you can, it's going to be close, every vote counts, and every little bit of effort brings aid to Kerry's cause.
Sept. 2nd - Kerry 252 Bush 270
this is not gonna help the cause, kids.

Great how bigotry is the modus operandi of the compassionate party. Anyone who votes against gay marriage is a BIGOT.
Here is an interesting perspective--the projected final map on this website:
http://www.electoral-vote.com/fin/sep05p.html
i think that basing projections on data that has not been updated to even include recent polling that takes the rnc into account is spurious at best. but if it makes you feel better jrb and takes the sting off those two polls that have the johnnies dow 11 points, more power to ya.
although, who knows? you did read that kerry's boosting john sasso's position in the campaign? he's the guy who probably could have won the race for dukakis in '88 if mikey'd been willing to play as dirty as sasso wanted him to play. it'll be interesting to see how this works out since the johns have staked out the moral high ground.
Hey--what's one more flip flop, right? As long as that flip flop is as venomous as the GOPs--considering that is obviously going to be what it takes for Americans to understand who should be the next President.
And, I posted the final predictor to include it and its changes from now on in this discussion. Not to ruffle your panties, baby. I just hope you understand that this bounce won't last long.
well, it might just last longer than johnny's after all, ours is bigger.
oh, papa, you know full well that size doesn't matter!! Delivery does, baby! Delivery!
i meant the bounce silly, get your mind out of the gutter.
