Meh. Can't say I like it all that much. Granted, I've only heard it once so far. But based on one-time listens for each, Katy Perry's song is the better of the two- and I like both artists.

Ok, so I'm basically putting myself out for slaughter by making this post, but I'm gonna do it. Let me say I respect all of your opinions, negative or positive. Also, I admit I am one of her huge fans. But I am not insulting or attacking any of the previous posters, so please don't attack or insult me, I merely wish to state my opinion.
I am very tired of people saying Gaga has copied Madonna. They have done similar things, but Madonna isn't the only artist to do out-there stuff. As for the cover for her single, David Bowie, Ingrid Voulting have done similar clown/makeup covers as well as Madonna. To people like me, Gaga is the Madonna of my time and generation. I respect Madonna, but I don't connect to her and I dislike the comparisons.
As for the sound, @javero got it right. If you watch interviews she quotes many bands that have the 80's sound as inspirations. Also, Applause is not all about her fame and fortune. She said she dedicated it to her fans who helped her through her surgery etc. It's also about not caring wha critics say, it's whether the fans clap. Just like Broadway, critics may dislike shows, but the performers care about how the audience applauds and cheers them.
Hence that video telling people to not buy her album. It's all a joke. She's crazy I admit, but she's tired of critics and gossip running pop music. And I doubt it will tank. The single is #1 in many countries, and the album is on pre-order. In a time where most people get their music free, that's impressive.

So I'm done, I know I'm a mega fan so my opinion is biased, but I think people need to really know an artist before they make opinions. Like she said on Twitter: Let's make 2013 a year where music/talent/artistry is more important than gossip/fanwars I respect all fanbases 4 their passion

Dont focus on ANY blogger criticism. I have been a producer/songwriter/musician for over 10 years. Trust the artist bloggers are not critics. The fans + music scholars are the best critics because they know the artist intimately

It's hardly the best song she's ever released, but I dig it. It's fun, catchy, and has a great beat. I'm certainly expecting this to be one of the weaker tracks on the album, though.

I just hope that dreadful "Aura"/"Burqa" song is never heard or mentioned again. No one I know thought that song was even remotely acceptable. Did Gaga ever comment on that leak?

I was thinking more of Robin Thicke, the latest Daft Punk album, the latest Tegan & Sara record, and a great many electronic/synth music that has invaded my alternative radio station in a completely wonderful way (WOOOOOO!!!!!!! No more Frank Turner!!!!!!).

I don't think the voices blend particularly well. Gaga's vocals seem lost in the mix.

@strummergirl: I have an older Robin Thicke cd which I played non-stop for years. Just listened to Blurred Lines w/ TI & Pharrell @ the Tube. Sounds like it incorporates the bassline of Marvin Gaye's GOT TO GIVE IT UP. Never really been a fan of rap collabos but that one is one of the better ones. The video looks uber cheap though Gosh, I've got some catching up to do. Thanks for bringing me up to speed.

Phantomcrazy you cant not compare Gaga to Madonna, Gaga has brought that on her self from fashion, to music, to promotion etc, she has followed every single step Madonna did.....only poorly. She is creted from bits of every other artist around, nd whilst artist will always be influenced by others they still have their own voice, she does not, her music is simple EDM music (nothing wrong with that, i loved Madonna's MDNA which is the same) but Gaga literally has none of her own persona in anything in her public image, its all borrowed, recycled and re-marketed, something i have no respect for

Gaga posted a Lyrics video for Applause featuring quite a few Drag Race Queens like Shannel, Morgan, Willam, Detox & I thought I saw Shangela. Following up to that she tweeted to Ru about wanting to guest judge on the show and Ru tweeted right back "Dragsolutely"

Bettyboy thank you thank you, I've been saying that for a few years, I said it on here over a year ago and got attacked for it. She showed no intresrt in gay issues before she was famous and whenever she has nothing to promote she goes silent (Like over the few weeks when gay marriage was been ruled on, she said nothing because she had nothing to sell). I find get obvious

Out of curiosity, how would you know that? I mean, not for nothing, from the very first interview I ever watched with her, she expressed her love for the LGBT community. I felt genuine to me then, and it still does.

And I don't feel one way or another about the lyric video, but DAMN the girl can't even put drag queens in there without being accused of pandering. Good lord.

I don't think that's even true. Didn't she sing the national anthem for NYC gay pride to celebrate the marriage ruling?

She did speak at the National Equality March in 2009, just prior to her super-stardom. And she dressed in normal people clothes.

Pandering or advocacy, she has intertwined herself with gay causes as she rose to stardom and as she continued as a superstar. How many pop stars on her level can say that?

If she said or did nothing while gay clubs played her songs, she'd be criticized for that, too.

An interview with some of her friends before she was famous (the interview came out just before Born This Way) said the friends had never heard her talk about gay issues, just going off that.

I don't know what Gaga believes and doesn't believe, supports and opposes, etc. I just know this song was a huge turd. I do not get her. Her faux "artistry" is a sham and used to simply garner attention.
