Posted: 1/24/13 at 10:39amSometimes it's just funny. I don't always need social commentary or a point to my comedy. If I thought she really was prejudiced I would not find it funny, but she exposes the very real stereotypes that exist and blows them way out of proportion for comedy's sake. It's all subjective what we find funny.

Oh. So she's something like an explorer? She goes out and uncovers unacknowledged stereotypes and brings them out into the daylight and exposes them for the first time, which then ... what? Neutralizes them in some way? I mean, how great of her. You're saying her entire act is a living, screaming example of exactly the kind of humor she doesn't find funny? How remarkable of her to take that on!
My point, and why I hate her, is that her act is social commentary. It's kick 'em when they're down, belittle the underdog social commentary. She's not even a full notch above Shirley Q. Liquor's lack of an ethical center.

Okay, that post was WAY funnier than Lisa Lampinelli! And that's when she's trying.

Ugh. These people who insist on being mindful of the damage done by careless use of hurtful language are such a pain in the a$$.
All I want to do is relax. I'm too G*d-dam*ed lazy to think about the effects of my actions--I just want to have a little fun hurting other people, and these busy-bodies insist on pointing out that the only way for our society to evolve to the point where dumb fu*ks like myself will stop kicking people when they're down is to be constantly mindful of how important words can be.
What a drag.

I guess I just don't see how noting stereotypes and mocking them is "kicking someone when they're down."

So are you telling me there is an agreement between Lampanelli and her audience that she doesn't actually believe a single thing she says and the fact that she is saying the opposite of what she really thinks is what's funny?
Are the majority of her audience like you? Would they all suddenly not find her funny if she really believed what she was saying?

Coincidentally, I watched a couple of episodes of 'All in the Family' tonight. Norman Lear put many words of prejudice in Archie Bunker's mouth, and yet he remained a hero of the kind of progressive activists who are such "a drag" about issues of equality, fairness and decency. Why is Archie allowed to allude to "lazy Mexicans" etc. and get a hearty laugh from thinking people?
Archie was created with the kind of sly intention with which people would like to credit Lisa Lampaneli, but which she so truly does not deserve. Viewers heard Archie make his un-enlightened comments while observing characters who embodied the arguments against those comments sharing the screen with him. African Americans, Hispanics and gay characters were represented in plotlines that showed them to be decent, upstanding, hardworking, etc. We watched as Archie's prejudices encountered living proof of their Falsity. Often, we saw Archie himself learn the truth and come to regret--or, at least, ammend--his beliefs.
I trust that Master Bates knows that there is no real truth in Lampaneli's gleeful repetition of slurs against different groups. But how many in her audience are not there to mock the hate speech but just to have a good old non-PC laugh?
And after an hour-long set of spewing vile, hateful comments, Lampinelli's 30 second all-purpose abrogation of responsibility--"Thanks for being here tonight folks--you know I'm just joshing, right???" is nothing but a whitewash and a desire to put some retroactive politically-correct veneer on an evening of the laziest, most childish kind of humor there is. In my opinion.

Posted: 1/25/13 at 12:11amLenny Bruce and Pryor and subsequent "insult" comics like Rickles, (who I never liked), were the masters/geniuses of this genre, and that was 40-50 yrs. ago. The fact that you CAN say ANYTHING these days, w/o being thrown in jail like Bruce was, doesn't mean that VULGARITY for the sake of vulgarity is funny. That being said, I detest Lampanelli. Just not funny for me. (Like Addison said.....)

"I wouldn't mind someone saying 'n*' and 'faggot' so much if I felt there was something else going on besides "I'm having so much fun saying 'n*' and 'faggot'."
Exactly, SonofRobbieJ. Here's how it's done: Lenny Bruce's classic "Are There Any n*s Here Tonight?"

Oh, yeah, and how could I forget THIS genius, and the best bit EVER. I think, back in the day, I went to every Carlin concert in the tri state area, probably. It sounds like a symphony every time I listen to him.

Posted: 1/26/13 at 1:37pmSome of you are so funny. You go into total meltdown if someone says the slightest negative comment about one of your favorites. Yet, you have no problem attacking someone for their favorite and even try to convince them how wrong they are for liking that individual. As Lisa might or might not say, " Queens, you godda luv them!"

As Namo points out, the thread is about how he hates her, so it makes sense that he'd try to make his point about why.
I don't think I've ever seen her, so I don't have an opinion on her work. But it seems to me there's a difference between saying "I think so-and-so is a bad actor" and "This person actually offends me."

The intentions in this thread are clearly stated in the title.
I asked questions of that poster to see what sort of thought process a fan of Lisa Lampaneli's goes through in order to laugh at her racist, misogynist act. Clearly, she must have s substantial number of fans who agree 100% with the racism and misogyny she spouts, which must eat away at her conscience if in fact she's "just joshing" and I would surmise that that is one of the things that contributes to her coming across as such a miserable human being.
But what about the people who enjoy her act and who think that they themselves are not racist and misogynist. Apparently at least one person finds her racism and misogyny funny because he believes she doesn't mean what she says throughout her act. I am seriously interested in what logical gymnastics that fan has to go through when sitting in a room full of people laughing at her racism and misogyny. I do not think it's such a difficult topic worth discussing, and would assume anyone posting in a thread titled "God, I hate Lisa Lampaneli" is up to the task of wrestling with these ideas. Clearly, that poster wanted to engage with somebody who hates her, and explicitly states the reasons why.
