I dunno, I think people take comediennes too seriously.
To speak of her as a human; do you KNOW her on a personal level that you can speak to that?
I find that she's catching a lot of flack mainly because she's a woman and she's white. I find Chris Rock and Monique to be just as offensive (and not very funny) but people don't seem to get bent out of shape over them as much as Lampaneli. I wonder why that is.

Posted: 3/23/13 at 1:48pmI don't know Monique's stand up, but I will say that Chris Rock doesn't kick the underdogs. Lampanelli is part of the majority culture and has said she made the switch from being a fact checker at SPY Magazine to being a, whatever it is she is now, because she gets to say "n* on stage and get paid for it."

I tend to judge comics by the latter and not by the former. Which is why I like Rivers, don't get Lampanelli's appeal at all, and love, love, love Griffin.
It's embarrassing to admit how often I agree with henrik.
But I think Lampanelli's appeal (to those to whom she appeals at all) is that she deflates certain words and jokes in an arena where the usual targets of that sort of humor can come together and laugh at it. As Freud said, the purpose of satire is to deflate that which frightens us by making it seem ridiculous rather than threatening. (Again, I'm talking about her stand-up, not the roasts; I do not watch the latter.)
It does not surprise me, however, that many people find her shtick played out. A fair response, if you ask me. The real question is whether Lampanelli still has the wit to sufficiently manipulate her lack of political correctness to make it truly satirical? Or has she become akin to a 5-year-old, just reeling off a list of forbidden words?

Actually, if the Lampanelli haters have actually gone to one of her shows, outside of her barbs, I find her much warmer than Rivers and Griffin combined. Lampanelli does the vitriolic stuff, but then discusses it and she spends a hell of a lot of time IN the audience making small talk, shaking hands, and giving hugs.
Also, if Kathy can make fun of Andy Cohen's lazy eye and Rivers can make fun of Cher's ugly "daughter/son" Chaz and both of those stars can say they are cool with it why can't gays, blacks, Jews, and Asians have the same fun with Lampanelli.
I think a lot of the Lampanelli haters are reacting to something else. I really don't get the whole "she's hateful" argument.

I just react to what she puts out there in the world. There is more than enough access to her work available on cable that I am not going to spend my money on her, I don't actually have to pay to hear what she has to say. I do not think she is funny and I think she is a phony with no ethical center. Last year I saw one of the best comic's comics in the business, Andy Kindler. At one point he said, "I don't *get* the whole Lisa Lampanelli ouevre." I felt validated.

The very idea makes my skin crawl.

Betty, then why can't we find it funny that Lampenelli is an unfunny See you next Tuesday that doesn't deserve the attention?

Namo, the idea to which I referred above may be found in Freud, S. (1960). Jokes and their relation to the unconscious (J. Strachey, Trans.). New York: W. W. Norton. (Original work published 1905).
Yes, I know, you're too lazy to read it. It's so much easier to mock those who do.
The odd thing is that although I'm not a particular fan of Lampanelli, I still think she's twice as funny and half as mean as you are.

See, I know that Joan Rivers and Kathy Griffin could be funny, without being offensive. They have told some funny jokes in their time.
Lisa... I think she depends on the shock value of the words she chooses to get the laugh. It has nothing to do with being funny or not.
I don't think Lisa could tell a joke, without offending someone, somewhere.
The very idea of Lisa becoming all huggy-kissy during the commercial breaks, also makes my skin crawl. I wouldn't want her touching me. She obviously does that to feel better about what she does.

As much as I dislike Lampaneli, I get her appeal far more than Griffin's, which is a complete mystery to me. She's never said or done anything that's funny, except to herself. She's always sn*ing at her own, unfunny, jokes.

Joan Rivers has been a top comedienne for how many decades? I think she's been considered one of our funniest female comics in the business since the days of Johnny Carson. She was even talked about as taking over for him. I only remember her making fun of herself for the longest time, and not others. I'm not sure when she started on the others but if you watch her show Fashion Police, you will not believe how biting she gets with her jokes about celebrities. When she tells each joke, the other co hosts cringe! You know what? For some reason, it's not that offensive to me. She laughs at herself while telling each joke. And she's a funny person, PERIOD. Doesn't she have a reality show with Melissa? She's simply funny and has the longevity to prove it. I also think deep down she's a caring Jewish mother and grandmother.
Now Kathy Griffin - compared to Rivers, she's new on the scene. I have never heard her utter a funny sentence. That's just me. She also doesn' t seem warm in any way.
Lampanelli is just the queen of mean. After watching her on Celebrity Apprentice, I saw she is rotten to the core when not trying to be funny.

That is not the real question at all. Only *you* have posited that her racism and misogyny is satire. Or has been. Or at one time might have been. Or was for a while but you don't really care but you wonder if people no longer think she's satirical or if her satire has left her and isn't what Namo's thread needs, is a generous helping of your pedantry?
You have NO IDEA how much I read. I react to your posts, their tone and their presumptions. A lot of the time it's BS and I have no idea who you're trying to impress. Now, I'm sure you'll isolate one sentence fragment in this post ("Namo, I am disappointed that you claim I 'wonder,' because I never said that and you are mean, just plain mean and therefore I get to ignore whether or not you DO have a point! Harrumph!"), focus on that, tell me how disappointed you are, never ever LOOK AT YOUR POSTS to see if there's any aspect of my criticism of them that might be accurate, then announce that your PM box can't accept any more messages because of the constant deluge of people begging poor you not to bait me anymore.

What's wrong, Lisa? Can't take your own style of humor?

Posted: 3/24/13 at 4:19pmAside from on roasts I've never really seen her act before. Randomly youtubing and watching ten minutes of one of her DVDs her entire shtick seemed to be pointing out audience members then telling gay/middle eastern/black jokes directed at them all the while protecting herself by commenting on how intolerant they would be if they found the joke offensive and the pointed out audience member forcing a smile so that he/she looks to be in on the joke and the others laughing because they're glad they're not the ones being mocked.

You got it, Eric. That's her act. As I implied, 20 years ago there was a modicum of value in her satirizing the inherently nonsensical nature of prejudice. Now, I'm not at all sure. Of course, you can't even agree with some posters.

JohnBoy2, I'm not trying to convert you, but to me, the appeal of Kathy Griffin is the zeal with which she punctures the sanctity we attach to celebrity in our culture--while still admitting she is as star struck as anybody. There's a tension there I find very amusing.
I agree her "jokes" aren't particularly memorable and it usually doesn't matter to me.
