I find her schtick rather amusing. Looks like I'm in the minority on this one. It's not that she just makes fun of the gays, but she plays up every stereotype - Asians in with small dicks, thieving blacks, loud Italians, Mexicans named Juan, butt-****ing fags - nothing is off limits.
"If you're a straight person you have no place using that word."
I disagree with this too. I have no problem hearing certain words, and it depends on context.
Anyway, her audiences sure do lover her.

Posted: 1/23/13 at 3:23pmIn large degree, her audience has been waiting for somebody to give voice to their darker impulses. She's just the female Dice Clay, telling the straight guys who love her that the women in their lives who don't love football are see-you-next-tuesdays and faggots like Michael Musto (whom I LOVE) that he should be free to print "dinge queen" again and again because it's okay because they're not prejudiced and so it's okay so just say it.

I don't mind Lisa. Actually at her concerts, I've felt the most sense of community among disparate groups of people. I've had amazing times with my "neighbors" who were often very different from me. The brutal bashing leveled us all. I am ok with it.
Personally, I think all comedians are cut from the same cloth. They are all intensely insecure and desperate for laughs. Lamps and Rivers showed the same colors on The Apprentice, as did Arsenio Hall who showed his angry self.
I don't think there is any difference between Griffin, Rivers, Lampanelli and Cho. They all cater to the gay community and they all make fun of people-cruelly at times. Singling out Lampanelli seems unfair.

'She's just the female Dice Clay'
^ Yu-huh. In the end, I just find the social commentary aspect of her routines so F*CKing lazy.
I wouldn't mind someone saying 'n*' and 'faggot' so much if I felt there was something else going on besides "I'm having so much fun saying 'n*' and 'faggot'."

Sarah Silverman is a great example of a refined social commentary where she uses lots of negative racial and sexual terms.

Posted: 1/23/13 at 4:50pmSarah Silverman may be a great example of that. I happen to think Magret Cho is as well. Because, as Robbie says it's usually pretty clear they have something bigger to say. I don't feel like that's the case with Lamaneli. She's as refined as Gallagher.

I also think Chris Rock's bit on using the word 'faggot' was really funny and smart. And what made it work was that he turned it around and made it about calling HIM a 'faggot.'
I was uncomfortable when the bit started and found myself laughing hysterically by the time he got to the punchline. That takes a lot of smarts and talent.

Posted: 1/23/13 at 4:58pmSarah Silverman - "refined?" Maybe I haven' t seen enough of her, but every time I have, which is several times, I think she was the most base, coarse, and even embarrassing in what she said. I never heard the things that came out of her mouth from anyone ever before. I'm pretty off color in my own sense of humor, but even for me, she goes over the edge.

"she plays up every stereotype - Asians in with small dicks, thieving blacks, loud Italians, Mexicans named Juan, butt-****ing fags - nothing is off limits."
Which is nothing more than lazy comedy. Horribly offensive, lazy comedy.

There aren't many things more subjective than what a person finds funny, and I wouldn't presume define humor or tell someone they are 'wrong' to be amused by something.
I personally find 'humor' based on cruelty and the shock-value of using emotionally-charged language just for the thrill of it to be not funny. At all.
And I find the notion that the perpetrators of this kind humor are performing some kind of sly societal 'good' utterly preposterous.
A room full of people laughing about black people being lazy and Asians having under-sized genitalia is just grotesque and unfunny to me. It's not necessarily "cruel" in that it's not based on any truth--just broad ethnic prejudices. The fact that there are people of all ethnicities sharing in the sophomoric exercise in no way ratifies it as a 'healing' or 'learning' experience.
Yes--I do put Rivers and Griffith and Cho in the same category. To confuse "mean" and "funny" is just childish, in my opinion.
Gossip humor--as practiced by Rivers and Griffith--is toxic and childish as well, but at least it is precise in its targets. Lindsay Lohan has made herself a topic of comment by the larger world through her behavior and is fair game. "Blacks" and "Asians" and "Gays" have not.

Posted: 1/23/13 at 5:14pmI can last about 10 minutes into a Lampanelli performance. I can be game and laugh along...and then I finally check out because there's never a point made. It doesn't offend me as some kind of bleeding-heart liberal with virgin ears...it offends me as a performer.

Sarah Silverman is pretty smart. She definitely has a point of view and gets where she is going. It's thought provoking, whereas Lamps is just lazy. I've enjoyed both.
Cho rubs me the wrong way-has for years. She stopped doing comedy and started being an activist. No thanks. Plus, she wants rights and tolerance for LGBT folks but last time I saw her live she went on a rant about cutting Bush's balls off and lighting Rush Limbaugh on fire. It was equally hateful. I really can't stand her anymore. I don't like her as a mouthpiece for the LGBT community. Go talk about women's rights or something.

Posted: 1/23/13 at 5:34pmLampanelli just prides herself in being abrasive. There is nothing else to her comedy except "watch me be abrasive". It can work as one-liners for a featured sitcom character, but that's about it.

I don't love all of her jokes but I do enjoy how she puts a set together. She puts the audience at ease by making fun of herself for a good while. Only then does she look outwards. Her voice is all about learning to laugh at yourself and the stereotypes and slurs are there to shock you out of your comfort zone. Lampanelli isn't my favorite comic by any stretch of the imagination.
I'd say Amy Schumer, not Sarah Silverman, is a cleaner version of the same kind of comic. She's really developed a strong voice that starts at self-deprecation and then looks out to really stupid and damaging trends in cultural identity and gender equality. She started out with more of a shock humor core and has softened significantly when she found the right angle for her sets.
Silverman is more misanthropic, making it clear how much she dislikes the really offensive stuff while also finding a way to spin the harmful stereotypes for humor.

Posted: 1/24/13 at 10:29amThe clips I've seen of her on roasts struck me as reprehensible, particularly when straight lunkhead comics laugh uproariously over Lisa disparaging a girly experience as making her want to "punch myself in the gunt." Of course, she used the actual c-word, and oh, how the men laughed, because she's just one of them!
