With some comics, when you say they aren't funny, you mean they offend you.
With Lampanelli, when I say she isn't funny, I mean she's just not funny.

Posted: 3/19/13 at 7:14pmI like her. I'm excited for this show. I liked her biography and think the show will have poignant moments. Rivers, Lampanelli and Griffin are all the same. If you hate one you must hate them all.

Posted: 3/19/13 at 7:27pmI actually don't think they are. One of them still has a heart and a conscience.

Posted: 3/19/13 at 7:28pmWhat why? Humour is such a personal thing--can't someone find one funny and one not funny, or genuinely offensive? *confused*

All comedians are screwed up. They all need therapy. I recently saw Rivers and she made fun of everyone under the sun. She's as "mean" as Lampanelli. Griffin has celebrity targets but made fun of fat people, black people, unattractive people, foreigners, and people's bodies.
It's all the same. If you're singling out Lamps as being mean, I'm really perplexed.

She's a terrible human being.
And if she thinks all of that weight loss and plastic surgery have done her any good, she's wrong.
She's ugly to the bone.

Can be said for Rivers and Griffin too. All of them hate themselves and are obsessed with their looks and all of them are fug.
Actually Lampanelli and Rivers are nice to people behind the scenes. Griffin is a c@#t.

Posted: 3/19/13 at 9:37pmI haven't gotten the vibe that Griffin hates herself, at least she knows how to keep it out of her act if she does. For Joan, it IS her act. For the other one, well, how on earth could she not hate herself?

"Meanness only an act"
Just like Rush Limbaugh, huh?

With Lampanelli, when I say she isn't funny, I mean she's just not funny.
henrik, I thought she was funnier 20 years ago when she seemed to be playing a certain type of Long-Island girl to whom racist and homophobic slurs were common currency (even while she admitted dating only black men). In those days it seemed clear that that "girl" was the butt of the jokes, and Lampanelli's humor served a function by deflating the power of those horribly offensive words and ideas.
Now that even most Long Islanders know better than to voice their prejudices so bluntly (one hopes), it's harder to see the point or humor of Lampanelli's act.
Based on her TV specials (not counting the roasts), it seems to me that her audience includes very few people who laugh because they AGREE with the slurs. Her crowd seems to be quite the melting pot. (As opposed to Andrew Dice Clay, whose crowds in the late 1980s were eventually overtaken by young white males who cheered FOR the sentiment of Clay's sexist jokes rather than laughing AT them.)
But to be clear, I have no quarrel with those who find her unfunny and offensive. I certainly see their points.

Well, here in 2013 it's safe to dismiss out of hand the complicated yoga stretches Lampanelli apologists do when "explaining" her act. She puts her tired racist BS out into the universe and everybody can convince themselves they can get inside the heads of everybody else who pays money to hear her vile crap, but they can't. But they tell themselves what they have to to enjoy the permission Lisa gives them to laugh at racism and misogyny. Ultimately, THAT is what she puts out in the world. And the gays who feel good about her buying them off with donations to Gay Mens Health Crisis probably think that's just ducky too.

"Rivers, Lampanelli and Griffin are all the same."
Perhaps they are similar in daring, edge, fearlessness and willingness to provoke and or offend.
They are not the same in timing, style, personality, inventiveness and wit.
I tend to judge comics by the latter and not by the former. Which is why I like Rivers, don't get Lampanelli's appeal at all, and love, love, love Griffin.
