Posted: 3/25/13 at 8:27pmOne of the things that confuses me about that interview Phyllis posted is that she claims the media "exaggerated" her preference for black men, yet the little bit of her stand up that I've watched it sure seemed to dominate a pretty large portion of her set. Was the media making her exaggerate about that?

Margaret Cho has never hidden her political view inside or outside her act. She called out some rabid right-wingers for things they have said and done and holds them accountable. Just like most people do on both sides of the fence. I don't advocate violence (though Cho's targets often do), but there is a question of morality involved. I know a lot of people complain that Cho's act got too politically driven, but she's hardly a coward for assuming her audience may have similar political views. Lampanelli targets minorities because they are minorities. Just 60 seconds of that clip was more disturbing and vile than anything I've heard Griffin or Cho say over their entire careers. And I don't shy away easily from irreverent or politically incorrect humor. She prefaced it with being so pushy and smug and insistent about her form of racism, misogyny and homophobic remarks, that she seems to sincerely believe there is something wrong with you if you don't enjoy it.
Another one of her zingers: "How many hispanics does it take to clean a bathroom? None! That’s a n*’s job!"
I just don't find that defensible.
Lampanelli is "classier" than Griffin? In what way?

I'll repeat what I said before, in essence. Cho and Silverman, like them or not, use their humor to a political end - to a purpose. I have no use or appreciation for Griffin, LL, or Rivers, who are offensive for the sake of being offensive. Trying to put them in order of classlessness is an exercise in near futility.
It is absurd to me to think that anyone truly believes LL's humor is taking the sting out of the ugly words and thoughts she employs. To say so cheapens the work of Lenny Bruce, who faced real consequences of his actions. Worst thing that will happen to her is someone will choose to never see her despicable act again. In the end, it was his persecution that killed him as surely as the drugs (imo).
I don't understand why the fact the that she makes a point of making fun of everyone (let's not forget the retards), makes her schtick ok.

Though I'm not sure what being "classy" has to do with anything, I would rate them thusly:
Michelle Obama
Joan Rivers
Kathy Griffin
Roseanne Barr
Margaret Cho
Crazy Tan Lady
Honey Boo-Boo's mom
Lisa Lampanelli

I just wish Bettyboy would tell us what Kathy Griffin did to him. Comments like this
Actually Lampanelli and Rivers are nice to people behind the scenes. Griffin is a c@#t.
and
Rivers and Lampanelli are not divas backstage. Griffin is. That's all Im saying
speak to something that is clearly not about the (classless) stage act.

I have friends in the business who have assisted all three and Griffin was the worst. That's all. It's not complicated. What you do backstage IS your character.
Look, Im never going to convince the masses on this board what I feel is valid. Im the lone voice for Lampanelli at this point and Im sick of being eaten alive.
Also, when Lampanelli has a hosting or talk show gig, she is well behaved. She doesn't mouth off. Griffin is intent on getting networks fined and being completely moronic.
Peace out-I respect most of the opinions on this board, so Ill bow out of this thread-you can keep hating Lampanelli and I wont look for any of you at her Broadway show.

I'd never heard of this person until this thread. So I just sat through 20 minutes of a youtube performance.
I don't feel she was showing how ridiculous stereotypes are, or that she was deflating hateful words by using them. What I saw was someone who was giving an audience permission to laugh at the hateful jokes that they privately might think are funny but don't usually feel they have permission to tell or laugh at.
And yes people were laughing at themselves as well. But I think they just did that as trade off for being able to laugh at the other folks. And it's all kind of a trap because people's baser instincts tell them it's funny and they're afraid of being the one that isn't "getting" that it's not really bigoted.
I found nothing redemptive about her.

At least Lampanelli talks to her audience and singles them out. Rivers will say "I hate fat people" when half the audience is obese. Griffin will say "have you seen so and so's face lift" when she herself looks like a circus clown. It's all relative. Everyone is damaged and comedians use it. Most comedy is the flipside of anger.
I'm surprised that Griffin is being compared to Lampanelli here. Both may shock at times, but to me, their styles of humor are quite different.
Griffin has always been very open about her cosmetic surgery. What she mocks are celebrities who have work done and then pretend they haven't. Deflating hypocrisy and the Cult of Celebrity is a large part of her act. She has no problem mocking her own part in creating the culture.

Posted: 3/26/13 at 11:22pmShe has a career of a sort. But if she had to get a police escort to get out of the theater hosting the workshop for her alleged Broadway show, well, it doesn't look like the career is going to last much longer. She's gonna melt away faster than you can say Shirley Q. Liquor. The time for race baiting is past. That was for Don Rickles's generation, and he is 115 years old.

I think somebody needs to respond to her. She says that if a comic thinks about her jokes then she gets cautious and isn't "relevant." I would love to know in what ways she thinks she's relevant. I do believe she doesn't want to think about her work. I mean, from the clips I've seen, it's not really an act. It's like watching the hackiest cruise ship comic doing the hackiest thing known to comics: audience work. She also doesn't want the audience to think about her work either. Because she knows if they do, it won't sit well with those with consciences. So she dismisses people who criticize her as not being able "to take a joke." Not personally being a "spic," I don't have to "take" her "spic" jokes. But I would love to ask her about them. What does she think is actually funny about using words like "spic" and "n*"? Why is that so important to her?
And if she's pushing for the legitimacy of the Broadway stage (but can't get through a workshop without almost coming to blows with an audience member), then I personally want to keep her racism, misogyny and homophobia right on the front burner where it belongs.

I only compared them from the standpoint that I find neither of them, funny.

I also noticed that, in the video I watched, she continually reinforces with the audience the notion that she's not offensive. Every other line was something like, "see, you get it. The 10 o'clock audience gets it. That 8 o'clock audience, those losers didn't get it." or, "yeah, see, you're a good sport. You're not offended. You're secure." Almost trying to hypnotize them into believing that if they're not offended, they're smarter, better and hipper than everyone else who doesn't "get it."
My thought is that if you have to keep telling people that you're not offensive, you probably are.

Posted: 3/27/13 at 11:55amShe is nowhere near secure about what she does. She's not very far off from a dazed Charles Knipp proclaiming, "If the Lord gives me the message that smearing on blackface and making fun of poor black women does more harm then good, I will listen to him."

Posted: 3/27/13 at 1:10pmOh, Phyills, you just live to combat my posts don't you? Every time I post anything, there you are, right there, ready to debate it. I'm not a fan of her work; to that end, I'm not NOT a fan. I've seen her do some stuff, I've chuckled, but I would never pay to watch a set. That being said, it seems that so many people are here just to rip her to shreds and to debate her credibility. If you don't like her brand of humor, that's fine and totally acceptable; but, after the third, forth, fifth, and sixth post, enough. Your point has been made. You don't think she's funny, you don't think she's fresh, and you think she's just a hateful bigot. There's only so many times you can say it.
