That's incredible. I think we're getting a new Salinger novel this year as well. 2015 could be a great year for books.

I think it's fascinating that this book was what she originally wrote and her publisher said "Write Scout from a childhood perspective." No publisher today would do that for a first time novelist.

Very exciting.

The title of this thread is somewhat misleading however, because (as you note above) it was written fifty plus years ago.

I know. I wanted to make it sound like "Harper Lee Rides Again." Plus, "Harper Lee Publishes Again" didn't sound right, because she's not actually publishing the book.

They wouldn't? Even with the fact that an easier in (arguably) for new writers is going the YA route?

So, who should be cast in the inevitable movie? The new book as set twenty years after To Kill a Mockingbird, so assuming the movie is a couple of years away, maybe Emma Stone as Scout? Maybe Jeff bridges as Atticus?

"To Kill a Mockingbird' is one of my all time favorite novels, and I CANNOT wait to read this new book.
The high school freshmen inside me really would like Dil and Scout to be together, but we'll wait and see. At the very least, I hope to hear what became of Dil.

So Dill goes to NYC, collects a bunch of rich women for his friends, writes a book about their private lives, is ostracized by NY society, dies a lonely alcoholic and is the subject of a Broadway play with Robert Morse playing him.

Mockingbird is my all time favorite novel as well as movie, so I'm all a-twitter with excitement!

If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it? These are DISCUSSION boards, not mutual admiration boards. Discussion only occurs when we are willing to hear what others are thinking, regardless of whether it is alignment to our own thoughts.

I'm ashamed to admit I've never seen the film and didn't get around to reading MOCKINGBIRD until a couple of years ago. I was simply stunned at the quality of that novel! (Talk about your candidates for "Great American Novel"!)

Even if the soon-to-be-published book doesn't measure up, I firmly believe it will be thrilling to read it!

I am absolutely sure that it will not be as good as the perfect original (like Gaveston said, probably the great american novel along with Huckleberry Finn), but it will be so worth it to revisit the author's world in an expanded story.

Which could go either way. It was written at a time when she was fresh, healthy and eager. She put this aside because some publisher wanted a different story. Was this story filed away simply because a publisher wanted to sell something else? It could be a work of genius or it could be like one of Tennessee Williams' later plays that, while interesting, are not up to the excellence of the earlier work.

I hate articles like that Jezebel crap. It has ZERO facts to back its vague assertion that something is wrong and the lazy writer did no research.

Here's an well-research and well-reported article from yesterday's Business Insider, detailing her battles with genuine exploitation in the recent past.

I believe those people are gone--and she is surrounded by people who have only her best interests at heart--as well as the best interests of her millions of fans.

Jezebel, like many blogs, likes to make big statements and be controversial. But I think there may be some reason to speculate--perhaps. Others close to her have implied that she now, being nearly blind and completely deaf, signs anything put in front of her--and has since her beloved and protective sister (too protective?) died two or so years back who looked after her affairs.
