Once I see "Good Night, and Good Luck" I will have seen the 4 that I can actually stomach sitting through. I'll see Munich on DVD. I just can't bring myself to watch it in the theatres.
I am not aching to see Syriana, but I think George Clooney is the front runner there and I want to see it in order to talk about it on the podcast.
Oh, I agree...lose the "Official" part.
I saw this topic and at first I thought it was a completely different thread from the U2 one! I like it, though.
Will do on the tossing of "The Official." It's really more confusing than it should be.
Munich was definitely graphic. WAY more than I care for, but I've managed to see all of the Best Picture nominees before Oscar night every year that I've been in college, and I want to keep the tradition going, dammit! I definitely had several "stare at my feet up on the seat in front of me" moments though. And I totally closed my eyes during the nail/torture scene in Syriana. I didn't want to accidentally see one mili-second of that craziness! *shudder*
Glad you found us, Elph. I was wondering if you'd spot the change and pick us out. I had hard (well, not really) enough time finding it, and I retitled the damn thing!
Is Munich really more graphic than Syriana? (Apples and oranges, maybe, but really - the thought of that nail scene freaks the hell out of me.)
Well, in Syriana, the torture/nail scene was about it for graphic violence. And, as I said before, I had my eyes tightly clamped shut for the entire scene, so I'm not really sure how much they showed. I wasn't willing to take any chances though! I don't really recall too, too much other violence in Syriana. I'm sure there were a couple spots here and there, but nothing that freaked me out too much.
That being said, Munich was pretty graphic. Lots of shooting with residual blood gushing out (blech!), and a very graphic scene of the aftermath of a bombing (among other things). AND (spoiler warning, I guess)
There was a rather awkward sex scene that was cross cut with the murders of the Israeli atheletes. While I get that Speilberg was showing just how F*CKed up this whole thing left Bana's character, Avram, there was one particular shot in the scene that was just beyond awkward/bizarre, where he's like orgasming with this crazy over the top slow-mo head tossing with excessive sweat spraying from his hair across the screen...WHAT?!?! SP, did you find this as ridiculous as I did? I almost burst out laughing, because the slow-mo close-up was so out of left-field!
/Spoilers (but really, it's not going to ruin the movie for y'all or anything, so I'd say go ahead and read it, if you'd like).
Aaaaand, BUMP.
The boys dusted off Mothers of the Disappeared in Chile last night. They played it acoustically in the encore on a traditional South American instrument that I'm too lazy to look the name up for. But yeah, kind of cool. I'd say One Tree Hill is looking more and more promising!
...and on a COMPLETELY unrelated note: I really don't want to go to work today.
Well, I really don't want to go to the rest of my classes today either, Pat. Join the club! It's so friggin cold out here, I just want to curl up on the couch and read all day.
It isn't too cold here today, but it is supposed to rain which in Southern California means that everyone loses any semblance of intelligence and just turns into crazed, automobile assassins.
I am right there with you on the reading though. I'd like nothing more than to curl up on my couch and dive into one of the 5 books (soon to be 6) that I am reading.
It actually looks like it should be beautiful out here. Blue sky, sunny, etc. But it's FER-EEEZING! My poor hands are so dry.
I had such high hopes to get a lot of reading done yesterday, for my Dylan project, but I ended up falling asleep in the couch, all curled up and cozy. I'd imagine that's probably what would happen if I had the time to do it again today...And "soon to be 6" books, Pat? Anything of interest. I'm so looking forward to graduating so I'll actually have time/energy to read non-class-related books.
I am currently alternating and going through:
Stephen Sondheim: A Life by: Meryle Seacrest (I am reading it like a text book so it's slow going.
An Introduction to The Buddha and his Teachings by: Samuel Bercholz and Sherab Chodzin Kohn
Digital Fortress by: Dan Brown
Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince for the book club run here on BWW by yodamarie78
I just started:
House of Leaves by: Mark Z. Danielewski (Very creepy and I think it will be very good but a very long read)
And I am soon expecting:
The Complete Idiot's Guide to Zen Living (Which should be an easy "at work on my desk" kind of read.)
Getting into/exploring Buddhism, Pat? It's pretty intersting. I took a course on lit/philosophy of the 50s last year and we read The Way of Zen and bits and pieces of The Buddhist Bible. I meant to bring them back with me this year, but I can't seem to find the box with my books from last spring. I really need to track that down!
At this point, I'd simply call it, "educating myself on something I know very little about."
There is some aspect of myself that I suppose I'd say I am on a spiritual journey, but I am not really heading or even looking for a destination.
SP78, has studied the Dalai Lama quite intently and I have a tendency to learn about things my friends are interested in - so that is the driving force there.
Although, I do love the concept of applying Zen principles to my daily life to try and "calm me down" a bit.
I'd definitely like to go back and study some more about Zen. I think there's a lot there that you can kind of take aspects of to incorporate into your daily life.
It's always good to be some sort of spiritual journey of discovery. I definitely hear you on wanting to go on the journey, but not really having any particular destination in sight. There's just so much out there to explore and take in.
mabel, I am saving my real comments on it, but that scene, and that sweat sprayed slow motion nonsense was one of the most ridiculous moments I have ever seen.
Even if I had enjoyed the movie up until then, I would have come out disgusted with the movie due to that.
There is something very wrong with the symbolism of that scene for me.
Dylan project? I like the sound of that.
Nice work there P. I am a very huge follower of his holiness.
I'd say Munich was definitely down towards the bottom of my top 10, though I did like various aspects of it. I was very impressed with most of the performances, especially Bana. And I was thrilled to see Omar Metwally show up, rather unexpectedly (I thought he was quite good in Sixteen Wounded a couple of seasons ago). And who knew Nino from Amelie was in it (I forget his real name...Mathieu something)??? I went into it not expecting to like it at all, but I was taken in by it more than I had expected. Though, I'd imagine that could easily get skewed if I actually put the effort forth to explore how much of the film was falsified. Tackle that another day, I suppose.
But yeah, that scene was out of control. Up until that point, while still very awkward, I could sort of see where he was going with it (regardless of whether or not it "worked"), but it's amazing how one little 3 second bit of a movie can really make you question just what the hell was going on with the whole film. It was so ridiculously out of no where, like from an entirely different film altogether.
Anyway...Yep, I'm writing my Honors Thesis(let) on Bob Dylan. Kind of looking at his early albums as a reflection of the cultural climate of the 60s (from literary, philosophical, political standpoints). Not really getting a whole lot accomplished on it though.
I just got a lovely package from Patronus, so thanks to him the rest of you will be seeing the 11/21/05 MSG DVD pretty soon.
Mabs, your thesis sounds so interesting. I would actually enjoy writing a paper like that!
Three cheers for Pat! Hip hip, hooray! Hip hip, hooray! HIP HIP HOORRRAAAAAYYYY!!! Thanks, Pat, you're a peach! Elph, just bring Tiff's down with you this weekend, because I still have stuff to send her (though she'd probably get it sooner if I let you handle it).
And yeah, the paper will be interesting, I think. I'm waiting for a few books I got off amazon that are specifically focused on the philosophical/political issues, so that'll be a help. I just wish I had more time to devote to it. I really dropped the ball over my winter break...but there's not really a whole hell of a lot I can do about that now. I'll just have to make the most of the time I have left.
Another little BUMP!
I...really don't know what to say until I see Munich, but that scene sounds awkward and ridiculous! It's definitely a movie I'll watch in the future, I just can't bring myself to drop cash to see it in the theatre.
It's such a depressing Oscar year for me. I always see all of the nominees for Best Picture/Acting/Screenplays but the finantial situation this year has made it impossible. (Why do you think I kill so much time on BWW?) We're having our annual Oscar night soiree at a friend's house, but I'll be at Campaign School until 5pm, so I won't get there until 6, and I'll miss Best Supporting! 'Tis sad.
I'm sorry, Tiff. Movies really are unnecessarily expensive though. There's no way I could have put the dent in that I did if I wasn't lucky enough to have gotten those movie passes for Christmas, along with having a hoppable movie theater around. Without that leg up, it'd cost a small fortune to see everything.
And yeah, that scene was fairly ridiculous. I was so shocked by its randomness, that I didn't even fully process just how crazy it was in time to look over to my friend (and really, it's just as well that I didn't, because I'm quite sure I would have burst out laughing). It's really a sight to see though. I genuinely don't know what they were thinking. The fact that they set the shot up, filmed it, and it made it through the editing process...boggles my mind. "Yep, that's a keeper alright!" Eeek!
Patronus is my hero too! Of course, that makes me a self-absord, egotistical maniac.
Yeah, oddly enough, the talk of "this scene" has provided a tad of motivation for me to go see Munich.
Apparently Pat's got pervy tendencies...just thought y'all should know!
Oh, I was more excited to see the absurdity of it rather than the sexuality of it.
And besides, what does that say about all of you if your hero is a perv?
