Ah, ok...yeah, I'd kinda like to see Jersey Boys if you'd be willing to. I don't think Barefoot's at the top of my list anymore.
Phil's on!
Phil in plaid...YES!!!
Also, I guess Barefoot has $25 balcony seats.
Can't wait till 12:05PST!
Ahhhh!!! I LOVE Phil! This is fabulous: "The Oscar Nominee's Bus and Truck Tour" (complete with the Oscar Nominee sweatshirt, mind you!)
He's so funny! Can you see him barking his acceptance speech? I want him to win just to watch that!
I KNOW! I hope he just throws in a token bark at the end.
That was a thoroughly enjoyable interview. Gotta love PSH!!
Okay, I'm off to really study now. Night all!
Moi aussi...I've got work in the am. Yipee!
Night, ladies!
Damn, I can't believe I forgot to Tivo PSH on 60 minutes.
I am about to make it all better by buying the Mandy Moore CD I don't have on iTunes.
Loving PSH on Letterman right now. What's with the butterscotch-colored plaid shirt?? But how cool is he??
He does seem to go for the yellow plaids. When he was in LDJ, I saw him twice at the stage door (I was on a hunt for Vanessa Redgrave's autograph, so I stopped by several times) with a mustard yellow plaid shirt (which I also saw him wear on Conan!) I swear he just has a closet full of yellow and brown plaid shirts!! Ahhh, but I love him for it.
Oh wait! He does have at least one blue plaid shirt (or maybe it's just more checkered than plaid). I have a picture on my wall of him wearing a plue checked shirt with plaid shorts! Oy, what a combo!!!
ETA: I know, I know, what college student has pictures of PSH on her wall, but that plaid on plaid was too funny to pass up!
Time for a Saturday am BUMP!
First of all, Pat, I was just talking about Magnolia last night! I had made my friend a copy of Aimee Mann's The Forgotten Arm and she just loved it. So we had a little chat about "Save Me," and hence Magnolia. So, twas a surprise to see your new av!
What else?! I was on set at Queer Eye yesterday. Had to get up at the ass-crack of dawn to catch the van at Union Square. I know it's not as bad as your calls, Tiff, but 5 in the morning is WAY too early for me!
It was a fun day though. The lads were playing dodge ball...highly amusing, as you can well imagine! There were a pair of other locations, but the morning was certainly the most fun.
Not much else up. I'm off to see Munich this afternoon and then Transamerica sometime on Tuesday to polish off the biggies before the Oscars. How did the Oscars get here so fast, btw. It seemed like frickin ages when the nominations came out last month, but now they're right around the corner. Times a-flyin', and I'm not particularly keen on that, let me tell you.
Anyway, I guess that's about it. I'll chat with y'all later! Hope all is well. Oh, Tiff, I saw on the concert thread that you did end up getting tix for FF. Is it seated or GA?? Have fun! I'm jealous.
I LOVE Magnolia as well. Great avatar, Pat! Funny story about that movie, though. The first time I saw it, my mom and I rented it from the video store. We put in the videotape and started watching it, and we were totally confused; we had no idea what was going on. She kept asking questions, and I would say, "I don't know, but this is supposed to be a confusing movie so I guess we're not supposed to understand!" So we watched the video and I guess we followed the general storyline, although we still didn't understand some things even after it was over. Then I took out the videotape and noticed that it said "Tape 2" on it. Apparently it's on two tapes and the video store only gave us the second one, so we missed the first half of the movie. They gave it to us (along with a free rental) when we went back, and the movie made much more sense after seeing the first half.
Nic, sounds like a fun day at Queer Eye, even though you had to get up early!
I can't wait for the Oscars.
My parents were here this weekend to watch my synchro meet, and I love it because we go out to eat when they visit and I think I've gained about 10 pounds. I'm still stuffed from P.F. Chang's last night (my favorite restaurant).
Okay, I'm off to read "My Heart is a Lonely Hunter"!
Good morning U2ites! (And, ahem, how come only 50% of our clan has voted/participated on BWW Idol this week? Hmmmmm??? )
1. Love Magnolia. (And JFTR, and I swear I'm not just shilling, we're trying to get Allie to do a song from it for BWW Idol if she continues on.)
2. Funny story, Claire! At least you got a free rental out of it!
3. 5am is brutal! That's a normal call time up here, so I'm no worse off than you! Isn't it painful? Gah! What did you do on set?
4. Say BBM last night. What did you guys think? (No way in hell am I putting my 2c into one of those enormous, threadjacked bitchfests - it's your guys's opinion I care about! *bats eyelashes*)
Yeah, I've failed to keep up with the BWW Idol. Sorry Tiff! It's getting down to the nitty-gritty, isn't it?
Elph, that was too funny about Magnolia! Even with the "out there, potentially confusing" flicks, it's always best to give yourself a head start and watch it from the beginning!
Tiff, re: BBM...I liked it, I guess, but I really wasn't blown away by it. I kept reading all these reviews about it totally living up to the hype, etc. but I didn't really think so. I thought it was a fine film, but it definitely didn't live up to the hype for me. While I initially left the theater liking Heath Ledger's performance, it's kind of lost it's edge for me after rewatching Capote and Walk the Line (and even Munich yesterday, even though Bana wasn't nominated). Even though I kind of like Heath and thought he was good in BBM, I do think I'd be a bit disappointed if he won. I thought Eric Bana was much more effective with his understated, quiet performance in Munich....What'd you think of it??
Gah, I'm heading out the door finally. (Last sauna appointment - "Lose 900 calories in 45 minutes!" - Sure beats exercise, even if that promise is full of crap!)
Will put in my 2c on BBM when I get home.
I've already expressed my opinion on BBM in this thread, but I'll give a general recap. Great performances, but overall an overrated film. I was a little disappointed with it. I really hope Crash can pull off the Oscar win for best picture (even though I know that's a huge long shot). Tiff, what did you think? How did it compare with the short story?
Mabs, you enjoyed Munich? I still need to see that, but I'm sure I won't catch it until it's on video. And you have to report back on Transamerica on Tuesday and let me know if I'll be justified in destroying my TV if Reese loses the Oscar to Felicity.
I did like Munich. It was way violent for me, but I thought the performances were all great. I also liked that it didn't give a real answer to the problem. It was kind of this vicious cycle of violence, and decades later, not a whole lot has changed. From what I've read, it sounds like there are some serious questions about its historical accuracy, but I really don't know enough about it all to know how it holds up in that regard...I don't know. It was good, but I definitely think once was enough. Maybe I'll rent it to listen to some of the audio commentary, etc. when it comes out on DVD.
My folks drove to Mass to see Transamerica today and were very impressed with Felicity. I'll be sure to let you know what I think after I see it Tuesday.
I've got to say, Elph, I'm not with you on the Crash front. I certainly didn't hate it, but I do kind of think it's the weakest of the lot. Though, I suppose to be fair, I really should have rented it again. I saw it over the summer, and all of the other nominees I have seen much more recently (well, I suppose GN&GL was a while ago).
Bono is nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize for the third time in four years! I wonder if they'll ever actually give it to him. I hope so.
I've heard complaints about Munich's accuracy, but it looks interesting and I'm sure I'll end up seeing it sometime. I remember Natalie Portman saying that she "disagrees with half of the film."
I know you disagree with me about Crash, Mabs, and I suppose you're allowed to have your own opinion. The only other Best Picture nominee I've seen is BBM, so I'm not qualified to judge Crash against the others.
Yes, and I suppose, you can have your opinion too. It's not that I didn't like it, I did. It'd probably still end up somewhere in my top ten (or just outside of it), but it didn't WOW me. Hmmm...I wonder what my top 10 would be. I never really number them, because I can't commit to the actual slots, so in alphabetical order (and I'm not putting in documentaries, because I'd probably want to put March of the Penguins, Mad Hot Ballroom, Grizzly Man, and Murderball somewhere in there, and that just takes up too much space!):
Brokeback Mountain
Capote
The Constant Gardener
Good Night and Good Luck
Match Point
Munich
Pride and Prejudice
Shopgirl
The Squid and the Whale
Walk the Line
Though, I'm not sure if I'm totally satisfied with that list...I'd also put Junebug, Broken Flowers, North Country, Narnia, Crash, Cinderella Man and probably even King Kong up somewhere near the top after that 10. And I still haven't seen Transamerica, Mrs. Henderson Presents, any of the Foreign Film nominees, any of the Animated Feature nominees...so there ya go!
Oh, and I hadn't heard that Bono was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize again. Didn't they just do that?!?!? Like 2 or 3 months ago?
(Edited several times, as I think of more movies that I would have put just outside my top ten)
Home! Thoughts on Brokeback - pretty much echo you guys (and I swear it's not because I'm scared of being at the mercy of your ire if I happened to like it - I said the same sentiments last night! LOL).
Strengths:
- The performances (especially Jake and Michelle - she's got the crying down pat!)
- The cinematography
- The chemistry between Heath and Jake
Weaknesses:
- Poor pacing; went about 30 minutes too long (not that the last 30 minutes were unnecessary, but there was so much that could've been clipped throughout so it would've been a slightly faster-paced 2 hour flick)
- Repetitive
- Lack of personal growth from the characters (aside from - for a lack of a better phrase - "becoming gay", how did they progress? They neglected their families, betrayed their wives...). Not to mention that in some ways, it seemed like it was a relationship based more on physicality than emotion.
- I don't know how I feel about Jake's character - some of his behavior seems to contradict the idea that this is a story about two *humans* in love who happen to be men. The fact that he's promiscuous seems to betray any 'love' he has for Ennis - and it can't even be argued that he was just sampling the field to fill Ennis' void and left unsatisfied, because we don't get to see if he IS unsatisfied.
It is MUCH better than the book (which really isn't saying much, but at least the women and Alma Jr. are given slightly more developed roles, whereas they're pretty marginalized in the novella) but I was expecting some mind-altering, enlightening experience and totally didn't get one.
I agree with a lot of what you have to say, Tiff. I didn't necessarily feel that there was a particularly strong emotional tie between Ennis and Jack. And it wasn't a lack of chemistry between Heath and Jake. There was just something about it that did seem more physically driven. Maybe that's because we don't really seem to see a whole lot of them when they go off on their "fishing trips." Right? Or did I just zone out somewhere in the middle? While I realize that the "tragedy" of the film was supposed to be that they were unable to be together, in reality, they did manage to see each other a considerable amount, but I didn't feel like there was much on screen connection between the two of them in the middle section of the movie. And frankly, I want to see some of that on screen tenderness and affection, or I'm just going to assume they're out there going at it like a couple of rabbits.
That's exactly it - their relationship seems intense, but from what we see, it's mostly/purely driven by lust more than love. And all of those camping trips, from what we see, don't develop the relationship, the characters, or their story at all - so I think they really ARE just going at it like bunnies, and riding horses once in a while. Because aside from that, why do they need each other? They aren't filling any void for each other (well, okay...one )...
The names of potential nominees for the 2006 Nobel Peace Prize had to be submitted by February 1st and they now have their candidates; I guess they need a lot of time to decide the winner! They announce the winner in October and the ceremony is in December. So you're right, the last win was pretty recent!
Somehow I get the feeling that Bono will always get nominated just as a tip-the-hat gesture to show that his continual effort is being recognized, but I don't know if he'll ever win it.
