I wanted Bird York to win best song. And her song wasn't just in the credits; I thought it worked really well in the part of the film where it was used.
I saw Hetta Gabler at BAM last night and it was fantastic. Cate Blanchett is fabulous; she has such an onstage presence that I could hardly take my eyes off of her to look at the other characters. I thought she did a good job of portraying a desperate, bored, and vulnerable woman; there were many layers to her performance. She was also hilarious. Even though it's not a comedy, she manages to inject humor into certain scenes with her timing, tone of voice, and facial expressions. The other actors were wonderful as well. I almost didn't recognize Hugo Weaving with his beard! I also enjoyed the lighting and the staging. Overall I loved the show and recommend that you see it if you get the chance.
Aaannnddd, Hedda Gabler is officially sold out. That's what I get for dragging my feet. Oh well, I don't think I really wanted to spend $30 to have more than a quarter of the stage obstructed. *shrug*
I picked up my acoustic guitar yesterday, so now I give it another 2 or 3 years before I actually have the initiative to pony up for some lessons. It's not really anything special, but I couldn't bring myself to spend any more than $50 for a guitar until I actually put the effort in to learn how to "play" it. We shall see what happens.
Nothing much else of interest.
I'm so jealous that you saw it! Tell me more!
Nic, just teach yourself tabs in the mean time!
I just watched Crash this morning. It had its flaws, but I liked it more than BBM so I'm glad it beat it - but I don't know if it's the best movie of the year.
Also watched Transamerica last night, and Felicity was ROBBED, dammit! And that guy who plays her son should've gotten a Best Supp Actor nom.
I kind of agree on Felicity. While I enjoyed both performances, I think I probably would have voted for Felicity. They're two completely different roles, and I think each of them did a wonderful job for the character being portrayed. While part of me likes the fact that they didn't go the "well, she was brave enough to make herself ugly" route, which the Academy often takes (what that what Reese was implying with her "real woman" schpele??? Probably not, but I think it kind of fits). But as far as the uglifying business, I think Felicity was far more impressive than Nicole Kidman in The Hours, Halle Berry for Monster's Ball, Hillary Swank in Boys Don't Cry and Million Dollar Baby...I still haven't seen Monster even though we have it on DVD at home, so I can't really comment on Charlize. Sure all of those performances were great, but I don't think they were necessarily the best performances of the year. I think Annette Benning should have won for American Beauty, Julianne Moore should have won for Far From Heaven...I don't really know who I would have given the award to over Berry...then either Annette Benning again for Being Julia or Kate Winslet for Eternal Sunshine last year.
Unfortunately, Felicity was probably, imho, the most impressive of there "physical transformation"-type performances, and go figure, she's the one to lose out! And I totally agree that Kevin Zeegers should have been nominated for Supporting Actor. He was WONDERFUL. And what a hottie! Ahhh! Although I haven't seen History of Violence yet (so it's not really fair), I really think he should have taken William Hurt's spot.
And back on the Crash thing. Have you read Stephen King's EW article? I think he's kind of on par with my feelings of it. I liked it, but it wasn't a great movie. Much like Walk the Line. I thoroughly enjoyed it. It's probably going to be my new Almost Famous, go-to when I'm feeling crappy and unproductive, movie, but it really shouldn't have been up for Best Picture (though I'm still kind of surprised it wasn't).
Since I didn't love either BBM or Crash, and I've only seen each of them once, I'll probably have to watch both on DVD before I decide which I would have given it to between the two of them. Though, I'm thinking BBM would have gotten the edge.
Personally, I would have been tickled pink if Capote (excuse me, Ca-poe-tay) or Good Night and Good Luck had won, but that was never going to happen...and even those, I wasn't totally blown away by.
I need help, everyone.
I have an interview at Roundabout Theater Company tomorrow morning and I'm freaking out. I've never had an actual job interview before. So what are some questions to be prepared for? Any suggestions? Please help!
And I was just ready to get back to being quasi-productive! Damn you, Elphie...Actually, thanks, because I have NO desire to go back to my Lytton Strachey reading!
First of all: CONGRATS!!!
Ummm, typical questions...they'll probably ask you some of your strengths and weakness in your past work experience. And they'll probably ask you why you'd like to intern there, what you have to offer. In the same vein, they'll probably ask you why you're interested in theater/shows that you've seen/like (my Plum Pictures and New Line Cinemas interviews wanted to know what films I'd seen recently, and NLC specifically wanted to know my favorite New Line film, so I'd brush up on Roundabout's shows. Couldn't hurt).
But I've been asked everything from naming specific problems I've encountered and how I chose to deal with them. I've had to talk about a difficult co-worker and how I managed to work with that person. What else? How I deal with constructive criticism. Ummm...favorite courses that I've taken in school. I don't know. For the most part, a lot of my interviews have been pretty generic. One theater marketing one that I went to over the summer tossed out a couple of mock-scenarios that I had to talk my way through (as far as reaching/marketing a target audience...obviously, you're not going to have Roundabout asking you about marketing, but be on your toes for random creative quick-thinking!)
Overall, I'd say just be solid on having an idea of what you're strengths/weaknesses/contributions would be. Those are the major givens from what I've encountered.
Thank you so much, Nic!
Ugh, I hate this; I'm the most unarticulate person. Now I have questions to practice with, though, which makes me a little less stressed.
If only I had gotten to see The Pajama Game last weekend so I could talk about that!
Did y'all hear about this? U2 has postponed the final 10 shows of their Vertigo tour due to the illness of an immediate family member. Supposedly it's Sian. My thoughts and prayers are with The Edge, his family, and the band.
U2 postpones tour

Gah! My head is spinning! Felicity? Interview with Roundabout? Edge?
Let's all sit down and pass a cigarette, shall we?
Where to start, where to start...
Very sad to hear about the illness. Most likely Sian. Thoughts are with the whole family.
Now to go back and read the rest of your guys's posts.
What position is Roundabout for? Interning?
I'd go with what Nic said, especially for shows you've seen recently, specifically Roundabout shows, and which ones are your favorite. The "Why do you want to intern for us?" one will definitely be there. Strengths...weaknesses...and like Nic said, how you deal in a work environment (probably something to do with ethics). Maybe they'll ask what methods you use to multitask, what you expect to get from this internship, and what you think you'll be able to contribute.
Thanks, Tiff. Yep, it's for an internship with Roundabout this summer. I actually don't think I've ever seen a Roundabout show. Oh well. I can talk about how I'm excited for Threepenny Opera. I'm so nervous. I'm such an awful talker. It doesn't help that I've never had a real interview before.
I haven't had a chance to read the U2/Sian thread yet, but that's terrible! I thought I'd heard rumblings about them postponing the rest of the leg sometime in S. America (not the last shows...I forget where they went first...Chile??). Hopefully it isn't too serious. Poor kid!
Claire, you haven't seen any Roundabout shows? Cabaret? Assassins? Nine? Pacific Overtures? Shame, shame! Just kidding. I'm sure they won't hold it against you, but I'd definitely brush up on some of their shows at least. I'm sure it wouldn't hurt.
For chrissakes, woman! Lie and say you saw Cabaret, Assassins, something!
God, this Axver kid is too much:
"I don't f*cking believe it.
There goes money down the f*cking sewer, money I barely f*cking had anyway, I could've put that to so much f*cking better use.
Well, even if U2 do reschedule this, I won't be able to see them in New Zealand, I won't be able to see them anywhere but Brisbane. What a total f*cking fiasco."
He went on to say something about the band basically being a bunch of wankers for cancelling and that Dallas should just go on for Edge...Jesus!
I feel bad for the people that booked flights/hotels, etc, but this kid's ridiculous. Apparetly, from looking at the first page on the second thread about this on interference, he got banned (which prompted me to scan through the first thread and see what he'd posted). I'm sure people will be able to get at least a partial refund on flights/hotels or be able to transfer them to whenever the dates are rescheduled for. I've never really had to cancel a big trip (and certainly not overseas) but it really shouldn't be that freakishly difficult to shift things around, should it? Especially if you'd be rescheduling at a later date and not cancelling outright, correct??
Either way, we're talking about an 8 year old child that's got some serious SH*T going on! (Though I did see a post from one person that heard it might have been Larry's dad that was ill...who knows??) I know it's easy for me to talk...I'd be pissed, and I'm sure if it'd happened to Tiff when she was coming here, it would have been a major pisser. But we would have caught a bunch of shows and had a grand time in the city just the same. And it's not as if there's nothing to be done on holiday in New Zealand, Australia, and Hawaii...or they could just reschedule. It's an inconvenience, sure, but I think the fact that these people aren't looking at the big picture is kind of frightening.
Whoa, Axver got his ass banned??
I can understand the frustration but to turn it on the guys is totally insensitive and not in keeping with being a true U2 fan!
I think if you're rescheduling flights, you have to pay a substantial itinerary change fee on top of whatever the fare difference is. I'd assume you can get the hotel cancelled without paying for a night (if it's at least 48 hours from the day you should be checking in). I can understand being in meltdown mode - I totally would be if this happened in October - but to blame the guys and call them wankers...WAY out of line. Their family matters more than a bunch of pissypants "fans"!
Ok, to be fair to that little toad (who always seemed like a right little pissant, if you ask me) he didn't offically call them "a bunch of wankers" but the sentiment was definitely there! He did say something about how now Dream Theater (whoever the hell that is) is now his favorite band.
I think I saw that someone posted that Quantas was charging a $50 penalty. So, if that's all you get stuck with to transfer your flights and you can cancel your hotels, it's really not all that SH*Tty in the grand scheme of things. I'd still be livid, but it's one thing to be pissed off about your bad luck and another entirely to take it out on the band.
Do you really think they'll ask me about Roundabout shows and which ones I've seen? I mean, what would the actual question be that would incorporate that? And how could I get around it? I know, I know, I'm a bad theater fan, thanks for rubbing it in my face.
Another question: they said to "bring a copy of your resume and maybe your references." What does that mean about references? I had letters of recommendation included in my app, but I don't have copies of them (I didn't even get to read them). Should I just bring contact info for the people who wrote them?
And yeah, everyone on Interference is bashing Axver now because of what he said, so you're definitely not alone in your anger! It pissed me off, too.
ETA: What kind of questions should I ask them (Roundabout)? I don't want to ask anything stupid, but I want to seem like I'm curious and interested (which I am, but their website is already pretty informative).

They might not ask you specifically about "a favorite Roundabout show," but I'd at least try to be familiar with what shows they've had there the past couple of seasons. I'm just thinking that Plum Pix asked me about general movies I'd seen/liked recently (they'd only put out one movie at that point, so I suppose they couldn't really try to pin that on me...though I've seen it since! Does that count? Love me, Plum people! I want to work for you)...Oops sorry! Umm, NLC wanted to know my favorite of their own films. MTV wanted to know which MTV reality shows I watched. Queer Eye and Theater Talk asked if I watched/was familar with their shows.
Roundabout might just ask what general theater you've gone to/liked, but I wouldn't be totally shocked if they asked specifically about their own shows. I think it's just as much to find out if you're familiar with their company as anything else. You could just say that you're looking forward to Threepenny Opera and were hoping to see Pajama Game but it's sold out and make some small talk about how great it is that the show is doing so well (hence, changing the subject and in giving them props in the process).
I'm always really bad about the whole asking them questions bit. I've never really come up with a set of particularly interesting questions, but they always ask you if you have any. I usually just ask them what the internship will entail, etc but it's always a pisser when they talk about that on their own! Boo!...Any suggestions, Tiff?
ETA: I'd just bring your references' contact info and then a couple of copies of your resume. They almost always ask you to bring another copy, but it's good to have a couple in case there's more than one person interviewing you, so they can each have a copy.
I'm pretty much seconding everything Nic said. Bring a copy of your references' contact info (plus their position, like, a professor or manager or whatever). I do think they'll ask specifically about their shows, and even if they don't, you should take the initiative to mention specific shows of theirs that you liked or are looking forward to - anything that shows you've done your homework and you care about that company in particular.
As for what questions you should ask, I'd probably say something like, "What are you looking for in an intern?" (even if it's on the website, it doesn't hurt to ask, just to show you're interesting in adapting to them), how long would the internship be for, are there any opportunities for careers after the internship...that sort of thing.
Thanks, Nic and Tiff. You're being incredibly helpful, and calming as well! I am familiar with their shows. I wanted to see some of them, like Assassins and Nine, but never got around to it. Does that count? I don't know why I'm so nervous. I just really want this. Anyway, I'll stop bothering y'all with questions now.

Have you heard any songs from their OBCRs?
I don't blame for you being nervous - I'm so excited for you!
Not to freak you out, but of course you should be nervous. I mean, it's your first interview of the season! Those are always nervewracking. Just take that nervous energy and go in there with a positive attitude and take it as a learning experience for interviews down the road.
Oh, and on a completely different subject...Tiff, what's with the jailbait Harry Potter av. It's kind of freaking me out!
Thanks again for the help, girls. I do know a few songs from the OBCRs; I guess I could try to slip those in. Anyway, I'm off to choose an outfit for tomorrow and plan some answers! Next time I check in will be after my interview! Eek! Night all.

Good luck!!! And be sure to keep us posted tomorrow! Knock 'em dead, Claire!
Good luck! Keep us posted! No pressure of anything, you'd just totally up your coolness factor if you were interning for one of the hottest theatre companies in the city, but no pressure!
And yeah, I'm a bit disturbed by the jailbait Harry Potter avatar. I would've rather used a Cedric or, er, Voldemort avatar, but frankly, neither of them are shirtless in the movie, are they?? But the more I have 13-15 year-olds telling me Dan's sooooo hot, the more disturbed I feel.
