It's a play that transferred from London's National Theatre (with the original cast...well, sans a couple of pretty much line-less folks). It's about a group of 8 boys who are prepping for their entrance exams for Oxford and Cambridge and their struggle about how to reconcile the conflict between two of their professors' philosophies on education (one who is adament on fostering learning for learning's sake and the other who is keen on teaching them slick tricks to get around the examiners' questions, etc). It's amazing. Funny, touching, poignant. AMAZING performances all around, and a handful of truly hot and talented British boys (well, not really "boys," as most are in their mid-20s)!
Mid-20s British boys?? Sign me up!
Link me, woman!
Bump!
Nic, I just saw that our buddy Jeff Goldblum is on Conan tonight. I'm not sure if it's new, but I'm assuming (hoping) it is. That and Tom Cruise on Letterman makes for an interesting night of late night tv!
ETA: Jeff Goldblum on Conan: craziest interview I've ever seen.
Updated On: 5/3/06 at 11:28 PM
Dammit! I saw this morning (on talkinbroadway) that Goldblum was on Conan last night. Grrr! I'll have to try to remember to pop a tape in next week, since they reair a week later at like 2am.
Was it a new episode or was it old? I'm assuming if it's new it's for Pittsburgh. I saw that Monday afternoon at the Tribeca Film Festival (and Conan was there!). It was very funny. Goldblum was there and did a Q&A after, but I had to leave in the middle of it to run back and take a final. He's...something else!
I also watched the first segment of Crazy Cruise's Letterman appearance. I shut it off and went to bed when they went to commercial. I can only take him in small doses now. Blech! Poor Katie (er...Kate). She needs to realize that he's turning into a major loon and run away before they get married. She could still make it away reletively unscathed...well, sort of.
You should definitely try to catch a repeat of Goldblum's interview on Conan, because it was absolutely hilarious. They're two of the funniest, most unpredictable men, and the combination of them together is lethal; they got into the randomest stuff. Goldblum was promoting Pittsburgh, which looks funny. I'll have to try and see it sometime.
The Cruise interview was slightly disappointing; he didn't do anything crazy.
CC/GGD tickets go on sale Saturday at 9:00am. Mezz seats (cheapest) are $29.50.
Ahhh, j'adore Goldblum! He's so bizarre. Very Walken-esque.
I'm game for the $30 tix. I've never been there, so I have no idea if they'd be unbearably terrible. Hey, maybe a bunch of GGD fans will skip out after their set and we can move down?? One can hope, right?!?
Ahhh, I'm in lazy-mode. I churned out a not-so-impressive paper for my film class this morning and never even bothered to look through it before turning it in...it's gotten that bad. Zzzzzz.
Tomorrow's going to be a long one. I'm so done with this VW class. Ordinarily night classes are the first to finish, but they changed it this year, so that they're the last to finish, so I've still got two weeks left. UGH!
Oh, I'm meant to ask you, Claire...what's on your to-see list once you come back this weekend??
The better question is what isn't on my to-see list! Let's see...the shows I most want to see are The Drowsy Chaperone, Three Days of Rain (I love Paul Rudd), The Threepenny Opera, and probably History Boys (after hearing you rave).
I don't blame you for being in lazy mode; I am as well and I'm not even a senior! Will you be doing/learning much of anything in the classes that you have left?
I hope lots of GGD fans leave after the first set! It wouldn't surprise me if they did. On a GGD message board in a thread where people were going crazy because CC is the closing act, someone said that the GGD management provided some explanation why GGD "allowed" CC to close. They said that CC plays lots of "really loooong hippy songs" so it would be better to let them go on last and not feel rushed. I thought it was funny. So we can hope for those crazy fans who don't know what good music is to take off.
My rather lengthy list includes: Drowsy Chaperone, Three Days of Rain, Faith Healer, Wedding Singer, (oooh, I got a free ticket to Tarzan for next month!), Color Purple, Well, and repeat visits to Inishmore and History Boys (it's one of those that I feel I could see over and over again and get something new out of every time I see it. I wasn't so totally bowled over by it the first time, really liked it a lot. But after listening to the radio broadcast and seeing it again, I think it's safe to say that it's going to be my "see way too many times" show of the year.
And I honestly wouldn't be too surprised if a bunch of GGD fans skip out after their set. I seem to recall hearing that about other double bills. Same with people showing up late just to see the 2nd act if that's who they were going for. I'm so excited to see Counting Crows though. It's been so long since they've toured. I'm still bitter about missing that free show at Hammerstein my freshman year (and reading about how they were giving away tix outside before the show). GRRRR!!! Oh well, at least I have it on DVD.
I'm finished with finals! Hooray! My one tonight was difficult (which I knew it would be) but I studied a LOT and felt pretty well prepared. Of course I didn't start packing until 10:30pm tonight, and I leave tomorrow morning (actually, I guess technically it's this morning). Whoops. So I'm taking a break from that now.
Nic, we'll have to try and catch a couple shows together if you're around NYC this summer.
Where's Pat? He hasn't visited this thread in awhile! Pat, are you still alive? Nic and I are going to a Braves/Mets game this Sunday! You'll have to look for us on TV! What do you think of our Braves so far this season?
Hooray for finishing your finals!!! I know it was the biggie (what class was it for??). I'm going to try to finish all my non-thesis work this weekend. I'm so not feeling Bob anymore. I tood a break from all things Dylan the past couple weeks, and now I really don't want to go back to it all.
We should definitely try to catch a couple shows together. I'm totally done with classes, so I can go whenever's good for you. We're still tossing around Drowsy as an option for a family show (with my godparents) to see when everyone's around for graduation, so I don't think I'd be up for that, but maybe Three Days of Rain (I think Three Penny's a tough ticket to get).
I'm excited about the game tomorrow (though kind of bummed that Pedro's slated to pitch for the Mets on Tuesday...grr, missed by one game!). It's supposed to be beautiful out!
*waves* I haven't forgotten about you guys. I've been working like an idiot this week and now it's catching up to me - I'm as sick as a dog.
Have fun at the baseball game tomorrow! Cheap beer and peanuts, fab!
Awww, sorry to hear you're sick, Tiff. Just overworked? Alergies? Just plain ol' sick??? However you slice it, it's still no fun!
I have a feeling I'm going to just crash once graduation is done and get sick and the whole nine yards. I can just feel it coming.
Tiff, are you feeling better? Sorry you're sick.
Back from the baseball game, which was fantastic! My Braves won 13-3! It was a classic game, with Bobby Cox being thrown out in the second inning (the Mets catcher was thrown out of the game during the same play!), John Smoltz being amazing (at pitching and hitting), and Chipper being, well, Chipper. I'm afraid I got too excited at times. Anyway, it was a beautiful day and Nic and I had fun! My neck is sunburned, though (it looks really strange because it's only in two small sections on the sides of my neck and not in the middle where my braid covered the skin).
I talked to my boss at MTV and I'm going to a shoot tomorrow! I don't know what they're shooting, but I'm so excited. What does one wear to a shoot? I have no idea.
Hey Claire! Yay for your game! How was the weather? Even though I know squat about baseball, I was just watching the Sex And The City episode where the girls go to the game and Carrie starts dating the new Yankee. Who knew it could be so glam??
Tres exciting about your shoot tomorrow! Photo shoot? Music video shoot? Interview shoot? TV show shoot? What's your department or responsibilities again? That'll decide what you should wear.
The weather was absolutely beautiful (hence the sunburn).
Umm....all I know is "shoot." My department is integrated marketing. And I don't really know what my responsibilities. As you can see, I'm somewhat clueless!
Well if it's got big words like "integrated", you must be important!
I would say wear something style-ish but not slutty. You're working for MTV, after all! (I was thinking if you were hauling garbage or being a runner or something, you should go casual and wear runners and bummy clothing, but I'm thinking you should go "effortlessly boho chic"!)
Hmmm...even though it's for a deptartment that sounds quasi-fancy, I'd still go for comfort. I'd say odds are still pretty decent that you'll be doing a fair amount of grunt work. Maybe if you've got something black (or something that could possibly look like it'd go either way, re: casual/dress). Whatever you do, wear comfy shoes.
The game was fun. I'm glad I went the suntan lotion route. How funny about your braid spot! I've got the same deal on my wrist from my watch (and it was sitting kind of high on my arm) and I have this one blotch on my right leg that's a bit red (where I had crossed my legs and there was just one side that was exposed to the sun). At least in a couple of days I'll have a couple not-so-pastey spots on my body! God, I'm so friggin white!
If you're going to be standing for a long time, you should probably wear flats, but if you're not hauling garbage or cleaning the set or anything, I would say wear nice clothes. (Totally selfish of me - I want to live vicariously through you, since I have to wear my bummy clothes on set most days.) I agree with Nic though on wearing something black.
And it looks like a tube of Jergens Natural Glow lotion is in order for you two pasty patsies!
I definitely think you're better off being under-dressed and comfy for the first go-round. I had no idea what to wear my first time on set, but I went grunge and comfortable, and that was definitely the right route to go (though there really wasn't any question that I'd be doing anything but grunt work). Though black does seem to be the color of choice. You can't go wrong with black, I'd say.
All I have is Curel in the lotion department. Hopefully I'll be feeling the cure in Curel! The inner ankle burn is a little on the tingly side. I never used to burn, but I never used to be so pasty either (how'd that happen?!?!?).
Do you think dark jeans and a black shirt would work?
Yeah, I would go for that.
With comfy (non-ratty) shoes!
Okay, thanks!
I'm still waiting for directions to the shoot, which is worrisome because this guy was supposed to email them to me. So hopefully he does soon, because otherwise these wardrobe decisions won't even matter.
Is it in Manhattan?
