Science of Sleep and Little Miss Sunshine are on my list of movies to catch soon! Just saw Black Dahlia yesterday - I pretty much agreed with the general consensus - visually impressive but otherwise nonsensical and idiotic. And I really wanted to like it! Too many WTF moments and a "motive" for murder that really made no sense. And Scarlett Johanssen's acting sucked - it was as if she was put on the screen just to look ravishing. (And she succeeded on that front!) Hilary Swank and Fiona Shaw were the best ones.
So Nic, are you a full-fledged Harry Potter fan now? You're all caught up? And think about it! If your cuz plays Hermione (*snorfle*), I'll know someone who knows someone who knows myfuture husband, er, my jailbait lover - er, who knows Daniel Radcliffe!
How are you doing, Claire?
I hope I can meet up with you guys at some point on the trip! Maybe Friday, Dec 23? Or will you guys be gone by then? I need to find a time to get away from Winnie. (Not that I don't trust that you'll go along with my story that you guys are "friends I knew in college" - which is TRUE, I DID know you WHILE I was in college! - but I don't know if the four of us would have anything to talk about...)
What have you gals been up to lately? School? Work?
Hey Tiff!
I really wanted to see The Black Dahlia, and I was so disappointed when it got pretty bad reviews. I'll probably NetFlix it when it comes out. I want to see Hollywoodland, though I don't know if I'll get around to it while it's still in theaters. Have any of you seen that? Tiff, Little Miss Sunshine and The Science of Sleep are both fantastic, so you should definitely try to see them while they're still in theaters (it seems like Little Miss Sunshine has been out forever).
I'll be around when you're here. Friday is December 22nd, not 23d. That night I'm seeing Company with my family, so I'll be in the city.
I've been busy with school (and lots of babysitting on the side). What about you, Tiff? Do you have a job? I have no idea what's going on in your life!
The Vancouver International Film Festival is going on now so I'm hoping to catch some stuff there as well - The Fountain and Volver, primarily. And Shortbus, if I can swing it. It's just a matter of finding time!
I have a job! Been at it for the last few months. It's film-related and I've been trying to decide whether to post on here the department I'm in or the movies I'm working on. Of course I have no qualms telling you guys everything, I'm just afraid if I spill some juicy morsel and some honcho finds it posted on here, it can get traced back to me a lot easier because of the department I'm in.
I'll PM you.
Yes, please PM me, I'm interested to hear what you've been up to!
And definitely post reviews of the movies you see. Volver and The Fountain both look really interesting.
Sigh...too tired to post a full-fledged "review" of the past couple days of running around. I've got a freakishly long review of the final History Boys on the main board, and I'll get caught up on the rest later.
Thanks for the belated B-Day text, Tiff!
And Claire, would you believe that the box office for GG wasn't open today! I totally spaced it yesterday, because I thought I was going to make a train (that I didn't end up making) and figured I'd just swing by today...no dice! I called a friend to see if he'll be in the city sometime this week to pick them up. If not, I'll let you know if I'm going ot be in for an interview/apartment viewing and I'll get them for sure then. Sorry!
I enjoyed reading your History Boys review on the main board (although it took me a good chunk of time!).
I'm surprised the GG box office wasn't open! Oh well. I wouldn't think they'd sell out of the cheap seats, right?
I can't believe you read it all. When I went back to read a response last night, I couldn't believe how much I'd written as I scrolled down!! Yikes!
I was surprised about the BO not being open too, but I guess shows don't bother opening on Sunday until they start previews (or maybe this was just a flukey thing??). Anyway, it looks like I might be going into the city to look at an apartment on Thursday, and if I do, I'll pick the tix up then (unless a friend gets a chance to get them before that). I'll definitely keep you posted (and no, I don't think they'd sell out...though I'd certainly rather have them in hand ahead of time than "risk it" the day of).
Ahhhhhh!!! My hometown of Milford, NH was just mentioned (and bantered about quite a bit, actually) on The Colbert Report. I wasn't really watching, but my ears perked up at "Milford, NH," so I missed the beginning of the rant. Something about a teddy bear clogging up some pipes or something at the fish hatchery. They had some RIDICULOUS quote from an employee. God, I hope this shows up on the site that shan't be named! Gotta love my poor little town looking totally idiotic on TV! HAHAHAHAHAH!!!
ETA: It was on the site which shan't be named, but had been flagged and taken down already. BUT, it's up on The Colbert Report site. I think it'll only be up for the rest of the night (because all the clips are only from last night's show), so if you're kicking around tonight, check it out. It's the #1 thread on the Threat Down!!!
Milford, NH can't take care of it's fish!!!
I don't know where (yet) but I'm going to be in for an interview. If I can find out where it is, I'm tempted to go in early, buy U2 by U2 and see if I can make something happen. I wish I had my Joshua Tree LP, but it's at home.
I'll keep you guys posted if anything fun happens. I'll definitely be sure to at least pack my camera...Dunno what else I have that's small that I could shove in my bag (I don't have any of my CDs here...I wonder if I have any decent pix that I took of Bono at the MSG GA concert??? Have to scope stuff out tonight.
OK, last bump before someone else replies, but I seriously just read two little tidbits in the last 20 minutes that are at once totally irrelevant in the grand scheme of things, but they're also totally killing the sadly obsessive side of me.
1.) I read on some random Les Miz thread that Monday morning the History Boys set was spotted in dumpsters outside the theatre. UGH! A) It's sad to think that it was all just chucked, B) I'm bummed I couldn't be there to do some serious trash picking, and C) I really wish I'd had the balls on Sunday to ask the stage door guy what they were doing with little props (like the notebooks) and if they were just going to toss them, if I could have one. What's the worst he could have done? Laughed at me??
2) This one REALLY kills me! So, Bono and Edge were going to be in New York today. I trolled around all last night and this morning, before leaving for my interview, to see if anyone had the location leaked. Nothing. So, I threw a couple little things in my bag and left, figuring, "hey, at least if I happen to see the crowds (maybe outside HBO's studios at Madison Square) I can join the queue and get something signed." I didn't end up getting over to the studio, but I did inadvertantly stumble across the location (though I didn't realize that until 1/2 hour ago).
Last night I saw that Wrecks with Ed Harris extended at The Public, so I went over there after my interview (very interesting, btw...fingers REALLY crossed for this one), to get advance rush seats. When I went in, there was a small crowd in the lobby (and several Public employees, with Shakespeare in the Park sweatshirts, milling about outside), which I thought was rather strange. It's a Thursday, so it's not like there'd be a matinee or anything. I actually thought that maybe they were giving a tour of the Public, or something.
Nope. That's where the interview was. If I'd looked closer, I'd be willing to bet that a bunch of those people had U2 shirts and stuff on. And I guess when it was done at 5, Bono got out of his car and signed a bunch of stuff (sounds like it was a reasonably small crowd, because they gave a different pickup location for the tix than Joe's Pub, so reletively few people knew where it was). UGH!
On the bright side, I got some seriously AWESOME seats for Wrecks (3rd row, center)!!!
Thanks so much for getting the GG tix, Nic! Hopefully the lights won't obstruct our view too much. I'm sure it will be fine. I really want to see the show, so a bad view at a good price is much better than not seeing it at all.
I'm so sorry you missed out on seeing U2. I know it must be so frustrating that you were right there and didn't realize it until too late. We'll catch them sometime, though!
U2 are planning to release a greatest hits album before Christmas; what do you all think should and will be on it?
I saw the headline on interference, but didn't read the article. They had With or Without You in the headline though. Wouldn't it seem kind of silly to include songs that are already on an album and a Best Of already?!?! Are they doing a massive 2-Disc Best Of, like those "Essintal..." CDs, where it's mostly a rehashing of already covered stuff (plus the token new track or two to sucker people into buying it).
Or do you think they would they try to scrape enough stuff together from ATYCLB and HTDAAB??? Doesn't seem like there'd be all that much there though...or at least those two and other biggies that weren't on the other two Greatest Hits??...Should be interesting to see what ends up on it regardless.
No, I think it'll be one disc of songs from all of their albums. The article said The Saints are Coming and one other new track will be on it. It does seem sort of silly, considering they already have the Best Of albums. Devlin Smith (who helps run Interference) thinks these songs will be on it:
I Will Follow
Sunday Bloody Sunday
New Year's Day
Pride
I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For
Where the Streets Have No Name
With or Without You
Desire
Even Better than the Real Thing
One
Mysterious Ways
Beautiful Day
Walk On
Elevation
Vertigo
Sometimes You Can't Make it on Your Own
I did get a chance to read that an hour or so ago. It seems kind of pointless to me. I mean, it's one thing to buy a Best Of album when you already have all of a band's albums, but to buy, basically a compiled version of the already existent Best Ofs...Even with a decent cover and one new song. I just don't think I could see myself shelling out $10-15 for it.
I think I'll get my U2 fix with "Rogue's Gallery." I saw it reviewed on the CBS Sunday Morning show last week. It looks kind of interesting:
Hal Willner is a legendary record producer known for off-beat multi-artist concept albums. He has two beauties coming out this fall. One set is called "Rogue's Gallery" of old sea shanties, sung by big names from Sting to Bono. It¹s another kind of folk music and it¹s very interesting but I have to warn you, a lot of these old sea shanties are filthy. Winston Churchill famously said the British navy was a place of "rum, sodomy and the lash." Apparently those were also the main subjects of their lyrical repertoire.
GIVE ME THE ABRIDGED VERSION OF THE LAST PAGE, PLEASE!! What's this? Nic almost saw U2???
I'm going to Disneyland tomorrow for my birthday. Whee!
Let's see:
1.) Last weekend I went into the city, caught a couple movies and the final History Boys (good times for all of the above).
2.) My hometown was on The Colbert Report, and as usual, New Hampshireites come off as incredibly stupid (Primary Colors, anyone?)
3.) Bono and Edge were in the city Thursday (knew about it Wednesday). I went in for an interview, went to The Public Theatre to get some advance student tix, noticed a little crowd in the lobby, and discovered when I got home that said crowd was waiting to go into the interview taping with B&E. Talk about near misses!
4.) HAVE FUN at Disney!!! The big day's Monday, right? I was going to send you a little package, but really...you'll just get your crap when you're here in December (assuming I can find all the little things I've been accumulating over the past year in Dec!).
I need the help of my music experts! I have to put together music for one of my synchro routines, and I decided on the theme of electricity. So I need songs that relate. What I have so far:
She's Electric (Oasis), Electrical Storm (U2), The Electric Co. (U2), The Electric Slide, and It's Electric (Diamond Head).
I'm looking for some upbeat songs having to do with electricity. Any suggestions?
Electrolite-REM (probably too low-key though)
Electric Barbarella-Duran Duran
That's all I can think of off-hand. How many do you think you'll need? Sounds like it'll be a fun theme to work with!
Thanks, those are good!
We don't need too many songs; some routines use 1 or 2 songs, and some use 5 or 6. I just need a good sampling to start with so that I can pick the best ones that fit together.
More info about "U218 Singles," which is what the new album is called:
"The bonus live CD will feature 10 songs from the Vertigo Tour stop in Milan last year while the 'best of' DVD is a collection of videos from 'U218 Singles'."
Oh, and did you all read that U2 split from Island Records?

#1 Elphie...here are a few good ones. I actually really love the first two:
Make a Circuit with Me - The Polecats
Electric Dreams - Phil Oakey
Lightning Crashes - Live
Electricity - OMD
Electric Youth - Debbie Gibson
Electric Avenue - Eddy Grant

Oh wow, thanks so much! I'm not familiar with all of those, so now I'm going to find and listen to them!

MAKE A CIRCUIT WITH ME
The Polecats
Sweet romance is not for me
I need electricity
If you wanna make me flip
Hit me with a micro chip
[Chorus]
I'll be a diode, cathode, electrode
Overload, generator, oscillator
Make a circuit with me
Just plug in and go-go-go
I'll be your human dynamo
Signals in my power cord
Impulse on my circuit board
I'm an AC/DC man
You can read my circuit diagram
I feed on electric jolts
I need fifty-thousand volts
[Chorus]
I'll be a diode, cathode, electrode
Overload, generator, oscillator
Make a circuit with me
I listened to that song (Make a Circuit With Me) and I love it! It's so catchy.

Yup. An old fave of mine.
I really like Electric Dreams, too.
I'm not sure if I could listen to Electricity (OMD) and Electric Youth (Debbie Gibson) over and over again over the course of the next 6 months, which is what I'll have to with whatever songs I choose, but I definitely have a great assortment of choices now.
