I don't know how anybody who has been personally touched by ALS could have any problem with this campaign.

And, I'll leave it at that.

I'll say it again -

I DON'T HAVE PROBLEMS WITH THE CAMPAIGN!!! You can be holier than thou all you want to and pretend that you're not seeing what I'm writing. But I've said flat out what my issue is and my issue is not with you. But if you want to make it with you, that's your business.

And JG2, I love her video. And Taylor Swift's video is fantastic! I wish more people would do what she did in that!

Jordan, I think you’re awesome, but I think you're the one who is really being heavy handed here. You simply can’t control other people’s conduct. So if some (even many, even most) don’t donate or mention ALS, that’s too bad, but so be it. For me, while I do hear what you are saying, when you point it out, the good that has and is happening so far outweighs any bad that I cannot possibly find issue at all with this, and I don’t really understand how anyone else can either. It’s a simple cost benefit analysis. I would think that even for you, the money and exposure that this is generating far outweighs any real or perceived thoughtlessness, silence, unenlightenment, etc. on the part of some (many, most) of the participants.

Oy. This thread.

All over social media, people are saying the same thing I was trying to say. But (as often is the case) on a single message board, that message gets completely contorted into something else and it seems like it's a MUCH bigger deal than it was originally meant to be.

"It's not the challenge that's bad but the attitude behind some of the participants. Some people don't even mention ALS when taping or posting. And some certainly do not donate."

We can never know what's in somebody else's head and we have no idea what they do or don't do once they've shot the video. The attitudes we assume are behind things are mostly projections of our own.

As I mentioned earlier, I was NOT in a space to make a video of myself when somebody challenged me last week. But because it was a pay week, I had and sent some money, for myself and the hypothetical three people I was supposed to challenge. I had the foundation send an e-card telling the challenger that I made the donation because of him. I did not post on Facebook about giving money, because I find that sort of thing ostentatious. Anybody who saw the challenge could easily assume I am an a-hole who doesn't want to raise awareness or funds. But they don't know.

And then Michael Cerveris made his fantastic video and now I'll send some money to the foundation he tagged. So, in conclusion, we just don't know what it is that people actually do as a result of this campaign.

Lady Gaga did as Jordan is describing. She is sitting in a chair, trying to look all artsy, with a huge silver punch bowl. She dumps the water over her head without moving or saying a word. Man, I can't stand her.

Do we think that means she didn't donate?

Is this a cultural moment in which no explanation is necessary because the campaign has been widely talked about?

I'm just axting.

Jordan,

I actually agree with you. If someone mentions that the challenge is to raise awareness for ALS, or even to donate, I would commend the person for doing this challenge, but that doesn't seem to be the case for some people who are doing it. Now, many people are mentioning ALS, but some are definitely doing it for the "likes".

I mean...Gaga's video was pretentious as hell...but I feel like the culture has been dominated by this over the last few weeks that most people know the what and the why.

I understand the concerns people have...but there is simply no way to look at this campaign and think it's been anything but a shocking success, both in raising awareness and funds.

Lady Gaga is just being Lady Gaga. It doesn't mean she, or anybody else that didn't ANNOUNCE to a camera that they were giving money, didn't donate. Such an incredibly ignorant, dumb generalization.

The challenge did not even originate as raising awareness for ALS:

As the trend has caught on, it has become linked with efforts to raise money for research on the neurodegenerative disorder ALS, or Lou Gehrig’s disease. The Boston Globe, Mashable, and others have followed the nonprofit ALS Association in crediting the idea to Pete Frates, a 29-year-old former Boston College baseball player who was diagnosed with ALS in 2012.

That makes for a nice origin story, but it’s not quite accurate. Matt Lauer’s challenge, along with that of Martha Stewart and many others, predated Frates’ involvement and had nothing to do with ALS. Rather, it came from a dare that was circulating among a group of pro athletes, including golfer Greg Norman and motorcycle racer Jeremy McGrath. Those who declined the ice bath were compelled to give $100 to charity of the challenger’s choice. (Lauer donated to the Hospice of Palm Beach County.)

Watch the golfers’ videos and you’ll see the stunt was really just about getting their friends to film themselves doing something dumb for no reason. The charity part was an afterthought.

Altruism was also sometimes tacked on to a similar “cold water challenge” that went viral earlier this year, in which people dared one another to plunge into frigid waters. One participant, a 16-year-old Minnesota boy, dove into an icy lake and never surfaced.

Thankfully, the ice bucket version seems considerably safer, and helping people with ALS is certainly a worthy cause. It’s hard to blame the ALS Association, then, for commandeering the bandwagon, or even for the bit of revisionist history in which the nonprofit credited Frates as its originator. (That misleading assertion has gained so much traction in the media that bloggers are now chiding Lauer and Stewart for neglecting to mention ALS when they took the challenge.)

This campaign was a great success, despite a few ignorant people assuming others didn't donate because they didn't shout it from the rooftops of social media.

"I Nominate Mr. Roxy, Goth & Mrs. Roxy For The Ice Bucket Challenge" not to be a stickler or anything, but ALS is missing from the Subject of this topic. All the posts I see on FB say "The ALS ice bucket challenge." Just sayin'

Not only isn't it necessary to announce how much you donated, it isn't even necessary to mention you took the challenge.

Question here. I read that if you don't take the challenge, you are supposed to donate $100. Is that true? Because that is a lot of money for some people if they would rather donate instead of dumping the ice water on their head. I do think this is a good thing, but if the $100 donation is true, it seems to be a bit much to almost force someone to do that if it will be a hardship. If that isn't true, then forget my feelings.

Gaga did post five separate tweets about #ALS, and challenged all her fans to donate and participate, all of which contained the link to her doing the challenge. So, she didn't say it in the video, but she can't control that people will link to the video in other ways.

Aw, Jane you said you didn't get my posts to Darreyl a month go, that you had blocked me. How weird you can read them now! Oh, and you mixed two words up above. Fix it, then talk about the Jane Theatre again.

My So Called Life, you started a dumb thread, then got called out for the stupidity of said thread, you bitch, yell, get defensive, act immature, don't apologize and act just plain stupid....but you have a comment for me, whose completely correct in my statement? You really are the cutest, most damaged person in the whole wide world. You started a catty thread just to be a bitch, then you wish death on me despite this being a thread about a horrifying disease, and still say ignorant statements like "the majority of people out there posting videos of themselves doing this A) Are not donating money".

Yes, because you know that for a fact.

Lol.

Oy, how dumb can you get. NO, I did not get your posts to Darreyl a month ago (I love how you remember the date) because YES, I have you blocked. Did you know that if you have reason to respond to a post, you will then see those you have blocked??? Oh, but of course you know that. You are an expert on this "internet espionage" type of sickness.

Oh, don't you worry, Miss Gulch, I"ll talk about the Jane whenever I want, jealous!
