Serendipity for dessert.
I've always had a fun time here:
Puglia - It seems like Puglia has graced Little Italy forever, or at least for generations. It's a true survivor and not because of the food, rather it's the entertainment that draws the crowds. The entertainment being you. Long tables fill up and Italian songs are sung, a little red wine is spilled and everyone is guaranteed a great time. Good for large gathering and a hot destination for tourists.

I love Serendipity and the Stardust!
Perfect places because they have good food, fun stuff around you, and are not impossible to get tables at.
go to Village Karoake (or another place that does private karoake rooms).
So much fun!!!!
Serendipity: isn't that where the movie was taped with Kate Beckinsale & John Cusack?
I am not a Native New Yorker, so I don't know all the excellent restaurants, but as a tourist (even though you don't want anything touristy), I really enjoyed Planet Hollywood. Do dinner, dessert, then theater. Or dinner, theater, dessert. Or theater, dinner, dessert.
Why not dessert, theatre, dinner, lunch?

I'd say no to Ellen's Stardust Diner - I used to work there and while it can be a lot of fun, the food is disgusting! If you do want to go for the "world famous singing waitstaff" just go for desert. They're actually pretty good at that. Though Serendipity is far better! Ellen's adult milkshakes are good, but they're very slow at making them. Have you considered Lucky Chengs? Not the best food in the world, but more amusing that Ellen's. They servers are all drag queens, who also sing and dance. They make a total spectacle of people celebrating something. It's a riot.
Have you ever seen the movie "One Fine Day" with Michelle Pfeiffer and George Clooney?
There's one scene that was filmed at Serendipity3.
Michelle and the two kids are eating there.
They all have these HUGE desserts, and every once in awhile, she yells "SWITCH!"
My family did that once.
Recommendation: for 5 people, 3 desserts was too much!
So how about...
Outrageous banana split at Serendipity3
Matinee of a brilliant show
and then back to Serendipity3 for FR-R-ROZEN Hot Chocolate!

See the thing is, my sister really isnt in to theater. So, thats out of the question. Serendipidty3 sounds like a good dessert idea. I am also trying to think of other fun things we can do, but i am having a hard time with it, since everything that normally is fun for a big day in the city is so "old" now.
take 100$ and go together to fao schwartz...
No girl can resist Sephora.
Get her a gift certificate and let her run wild.
If she likes disco music and doesn't mind dancing on her chair during dinner then I suggest Mangia e Bevi. DP recommended it to me and I had a blast when I went there!
Oooh! That sounds cool!
And dude, I love Italian food.
Maybe I'll go.
Please explain the Disco part.

Every few minutes or so they crank up the disco music and if they know it's your birthday, they call out your name and make you stand on your chair and dance...everybody gets into it, clapping and dancing...it really is a good time. Not a place for a stick in the mud!
Oh, I forgot, they give you tambourines too!!!!

FAO has had bankrupt troubles...but a sign out front says it will be re-opening this summer
Perhaps they have totally re-hauled, I looked for info on-line, but didnt see the Legal in's & out's...still...its a GOOD thing we still have FAO to look forward to here in NYC
What about dinner at Sardi's?
There are museums for everything in this city. What does she like?
This is a listing of some, not all.
There's even a Museum of the American Piano. Who knew?

Ah, now see all the smaller branches of FAO (at least in the tri-state area) closed a few years ago.... which sucks because overpriced or not, I loved that store! I haven't been to the one in NYC probably since I was 12.
