I'm with zeppy. Today doesn't seem so special because I don't really care who wins. I have no favorites. But I do enjoy watching it (save for the acceptance speeches) and I'm one of the few who doesn't mind when the broadcast gets too long.
I'm much more excited this year than I was last year.
I love pretty much all the nominees. And the actress races could go any number of ways.
I'm super excited to see what happens.
I just hope PTA gets at least one award for TWBB, but the Coen's will probably take them all. What a feat will that be. Each getting 4 Oscars in one night.
I've got two bottle of bubbles in the fridge, and I'm watching because a. there is going to be an array of red carpet maternity frocks (Blanchett, Kidman, Jolie) and mainly because even I can't imagine what Tilda Swinton will turn up in.
Hopefully, she'll wear THAT and stir things up a bit!
I'm not really into movies as I used to be, but food never goes out of style. Besty, I'll have some of that mushroom soup, please.
That Seinfeld quote was actually part of an award acceptance speech. It's on 'that site' somewhere, but right now the internet is so sluggish that I'll just tell you to look for it if you really wanna.
Like many award shows, Oscar included, there's the "who will win" and the "who should win" part of it.
Hands down, Marion C clearly deserves to win for her extraordinary performance as Edith Piaf. I'll be going to a friend's house to watch the awards.
Back in 1984...........oh, so long ago, I was lucky enough to have attended The Oscars. A co-worker of mine, at the time, his father belongs to the Academy, and I was able to get his tickets. It was a magical, amazing night!
Was that the night Sally Field gave her legendary 'YOU LIKE ME!"speech, Neal?
If nealb1 went in '84, that was for the year 1983... meaning Terms of Endearment.
I've never been, athough I was almost a last-minute seat-filler one year about a dozen years ago... but my grandfather went every year from the first ceremony through 1955's.
And he threw out all his programs, ticket stubs, etc.!!! Because he thought nobody would be interested.
Good GOD.
The more I think about it, the more I can't decide who I think will win Best Actress.
And Supporting Actress is a complete crapshoot.
Yes, 1984 was when "Terms of Endearment" won. I believe that Sally Field's speech was 1 or 2 years after that.
Gosh, he threw all that stuff out........programs, ticket stubs, etc? WOW! What a gold mine you could have had.......either by keeping it or putting it on ebay. I still have my program for 1984. The outside of the program was a black, crushed velvet.

"and I'm watching because a. there is going to be an array of red carpet maternity frocks"
God only knows how many times we're going to have to hear that sickening expression "baby bump" tonight.
I still have a lot of Academy stuff, but not going back THAT far. Mostly from the past 20 years, since I had/have friends who vote. One gave me her invitation every year, plus I have old ballot stubs, rule books, and TONS of stuff from when the studios used to send crazy things to the voters to woo them. You wouldn't believe the money they used to spend on packaging! Insane. Until the Academy stepped in and said the extra-fancy packaging amounted to gifts/bribes, and banned it. It was an exciting 5-7 years though.
That's great that you have all that stuff. I remember when the Academy stepped in and said no more of the "bribes."
It's always a fun night. I want Marion C to win Best Actress for her utter transformation as Edith Piaf. She was beyond extraordinary.
This is the first time in years that I don't care who wins. I have seen alot of the movies and they all are good...
But I think Julie Christie will win. What a wonderful Actress
and Miss Ruby Dee.....How could the Academy not give it to her. Her Last Chance(Helen Hayes) Best Suportting Actress Award.
What a career!!!
I'd really like for Marion Cotillard to win. Her performance in La Vie en Rose was phenomenal. As far as Ellen Page goes, I thought her performance was good, there's no way she deserves it over Marion or even Julie.
I'm also rooting for Julian Schnabel to win best director for The Diving Bell and The Butterfly, although my gut feeling is that the Oscar is going to the Coen brothers.
My favorite weird thing that was sent to the Academy...
The year of "Dead Man Walking," they sent the VHS screener in a plain box that looked just like a plain wooden coffin.
CREEEEEEEEPY.
And FedEx delivered the screener for "Rambling Rose" along with a single long-stemmed rose. All nice and elegant.
Do you get a newborn with Juno?
God, that would be great. If they kept going with the crazy stuff now, and it kept getting more extreme. Can you imagine?
There Will Be Blood arrives with a coupon for a free oil change.
No Country for Old Men... screener delivered in a black leather case with fake money in it.... or worse yet... 50 bucks in singles? (Talk about a BRIBE.)
Ratatouille arrives with a free gourmet dinner.
When I worked in a hotel in NY that hosted press junkets some of the stuff they came up with to give to the critics was hilarious.
The year Gosford Park was nominated they made a very limited edition board game like clue.
We'll see what happens with Hal Holbrook and Ruby Dee, if they win for their career vs. the actual performance. Remember 11 years ago when Lauren Bacall was the expected winner for "Mirror Has Two Faces," and she didn't win?
"There Will Be Blood arrives with a coupon for a free oil change."
And, of course, a free milkshake with an extra-long straw.
"Into The Wild," gift certificate to Outback Steakhouse.
"Sweeney Todd," free shave and a haircut.
"Lars and the Real Girl," hehehe.
Because it wouldn't be Oscar Night without them...
I wouldn't mind the Oscar going to Ruby Dee, but she doesn't deserve it for this performance. She doesn't even deserve to be nominated for this specific performance.
Hal Holbrook, however, deserves to win.
I am really against these "lifetime achievement" Oscars. The Alan Arkin and Morgan Freeman AARP Award.
The list is soooooooo long of the actors who won, but shouldn't have. Many times, it's the ....you've-never-won-before-so-we'll-give-it-to-you-now award.
